As many as 382 cadets were Saturday commissioned into the Army after a passing-out parade at the Indian Military Academy here. GOC-in-C (South-Western Command) Lt Gen Cherish Matheson took the salute. Seventy-seven candidates from nine other nations, including Afghanistan, Mauritius, Maldives and Fiji, too passed out from the academy after completing their training. Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said Saturday the government has decided to honour media houses for their contribution towards creating awareness about yoga. He said 33 awards will be given 11 each for newspaper organisations, TV and radio channels. A six-member jury will consider the entries in all 23 languages. Media campaigns on yoga from June 10 to June 25 will be considered for International Yoga Day, celebrated annually on June 21. This year, the government has shortlisted Delhi, Shimla, Mysore, Ahmedabad and Ranchi to hold national programmes to mark the event. Last year, the main event on International Day of Yoga was held at the ground of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated. The first International Yoga Day was organised at Rajpath in New Delhi in 2015, in which representatives of 191 countries took part. In 2016, the main function was held in Chandigarh and in 2017, it was held in Lucknow.

Nine people, including eight women, died as their vehicle overturned when they were returning after offering prayers at a dargah in Gujarat's Banaskantha district on Friday, police said. The incident occurred in the evening at the Trishulia Ghat, a hilly patch on the Ambaji-Danta road in Ambaji town, after the multi-utility vehicle's brakes failed at a sharp turn, the police said. "Nine people, including eight women, have died in the mishap. Around 25 others, who were in the vehicle, have received injuries," district Assistant Superintendent of Police Ajit Rajian said. A state government release put the number of injured at 27. The ASP said the injured had been admitted to hospitals in Danta and Palanpur, and the condition of one of them was critical. The deceased were coming back to Vadgam from Ambaji after offering prayers at a dargah in Danta area, the police said. Authorities say a swimmer at a Bavarian lake drowned a dog in self-defense after the animal bit his arm and wouldn't let go. Police said Friday the 83-year-old owner was walking his dog alongside the lake in Schwarzenbach an der Saale when the German Shepherd attacked the 49-year-old on Monday night. Police say onlookers tried to help pry the dog's jaws off the man's arm but were unable to free the appendage. That sent the swimmer back into the lake, where he plunged his arm with the dog still latched on firmly under the water. The dog still didn't let go, and drowned. The swimmer was taken to a hospital and treated for serious, but not life threatening injuries. The owner is under investigation for negligent bodily harm.
