World Cup 2023, IND vs SL Preview: India face Lanka in battle of unequals

Twelve years on from that dream April 2011 night when a country of billions landed in a frenzy of delight, India take on Sri Lanka in another World Cup clash here on Sunday, albeit one that is poles apart from being termed an encore. If that World Cup final was truly a battle of titans in every sense, the impending contest is more or less a battle of the unequals. India have hitherto marched on immaculately in pursuit of a third title and Sri Lanka have lost more than what they have won. Unbeaten in six straight games and largely unchallenged for longer spans, India have displayed traits of being a champion side which has the knack of staging remarkable fightbacks. India's confidence is irrefutably high but greater is their self-belief and trust on skills witnessed in the mini-storm created by Australia in Chennai when reduced to 5/3 or when England limited them to a modest 229/9 in Lucknow. The doggedness to keep striking England until the defending champions were disintegrated w

World Cup 2023 IND vs SL: Lanka coach parsies Indian bowling attack

India's bowling attack makes the opposition envious and Sri Lanka head coach Chris Silverwood on Wednesday minced no words in admitting that any team in the world would want to have a line-up like that. At the same time, he also hoped that his team puts together a combined show in their World Cup clash here on Thursday. India will face Sri Lanka in what seems to be a lop-sided contest already, with the World Cup hosts topping the points table with six wins on the trot. On the other hand, Sri Lanka are languishing in the bottom half of the table, placed at the seventh spot at the moment. "If you look at that bowling attack and you watch them operate, it is a very strong bowling attack. I think any team in the world would want an attack like that, to be honest," Silverwood told the media here during the team's training session. "But we see that as a great challenge for our guys. We see it as an opportunity to go out and play against the best and see, I mean, pit ourselves against tha

David Willey to retire from international cricket after World Cup 2023

England all-rounder David Willey on Wednesday announced that he will retire from international cricket after the end of the ongoing World Cup and insisted that his team's underwhelming performance in the showpiece has not influenced his decision. Willey's decision has come a week after England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) excluded him from the list of cricketers who were offered central contracts for the 2023-24 season. "I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I've only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England," Willey wrote in an Instagram post. "So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of the World Cup." England have endured a forgettable campaign so far as the defending champions are languishing at the bottom of the 10-team table, managing just one victory from their six matches. "I have worn the shirt with immense pride and given my absol

World Cup 2023: We have now started to find our rhythm - Fakhar Zaman

A thumping seven-wicket win over Bangladesh has certainly uplifted the mood in Pakistan's camp and opener Fakhar Zaman on Tuesday said they're firmly focused on making the semifinals, despite all the ifs and buts. Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi led the pace attack brilliantly to bowl out Bangladesh for a paltry 204 before they cantered home in 32.3 overs to hugely boost their net run-rate. "Every win in the World Cup, gives you confidence. We also waited for this win," Zaman said at the post-match media interaction. "We have now started to find our rhythm. Against South Africa, we made comebacks while batting as well as bowling. "We are getting our combinations right. I've been part of this dressing room for eight years now, it will improve further," he said. Making a comeback after five matches, Fakhar struck a 74-ball 81 and laid the foundation with Abdullah Shafique (68) in a 128-run opening stand. It made it a straightforward chase for Pakistan as they looked in a hurry to

No fireworks in Delhi, Mumbai during World Cup matches as pollution worsens

The BCCI has banned the display of fireworks during the remaining World Cup games in Delhi and Mumbai due to worsening air quality in the two mega cities. Delhi has only one match left to host, the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka game on November 6, while Mumbai are scheduled to host two more league games, on November 2 and November 7, and the semifinal on November 15. BCCI is sensitive to environmental concerns. I took up the matter formally with the ICC and there won't be any fireworks display in Mumbai, which can add to the pollution level," said BCCI secretary Jay Shah in a statement on Wednesday. "The Board is committed to combating environmental issues and will always place the interest of our fans and stakeholders at the forefront. The BCCI acknowledges the urgent concern surrounding air quality in both Mumbai and New Delhi. "While we strive to host the ICC World Cup in a manner befitting the celebration of cricket, we remain steadfast in our commitment to prioritising the health and .

World Cup 2023: Iyer's short ball troubles focal point in India nets

With his vulnerability against the short ball coming to the fore once again, India number four Shreyas Iyer trained with the aim of overcoming his longstanding struggles ahead of the World Cup game against Sri Lanka here on Thursday. None of the top-order guns captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill were in attendance for the optional session. Iyer versus the short ball was the focal point. The team's famed bowling attack, which delivered a fabulous 100-run victory over England last Sunday, also opted for rest. Perched at the top of the World Cup points table and with a spot in the semifinals virtually sealed for Rohit and Co, it is only imperative that the team keeps ironing out the areas of concern along the way. Iyer's troubles against the short ball, combined with the lack of big scores as the preferred No 4, is certainly something that the team management and the player want to overcome and it was evident as far as his approach to the session on Tuesday was ...

World Cup 2023: Latham banks world-class bowling attack against in-form SA

Stand-in New Zealand skipper Tom Latham on Tuesday called on his world-class bowlers to be proactive and understand the match-ups ahead of their crucial World Cup clash against a rampaging South Africa here. It will be a battle between two formidable batting units when South Africa and New Zealand, who are currently at the second and third spots respectively, face off at the MCA stadium here on Wednesday. "Yeah, I think it's just recognising situations as best you can and trying to be proactive as much as we can as well from a bowling point of view and I guess from a field placement point of view as well," Latham said during the pre-match press conference. "Like every team we do our scouting, trying to find weaknesses from a batting point of view from South Africa, they're a team that's running pretty hot at the moment. "They've got some guys in form from a batting point of view. So again, it's going to be another great challenge. And we have come to a different venue and we've got

Tendulkar's statue in Wankhede to be inaugurated ahead of IND vs SL match

A life-size statue of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will be inaugurated on Wednesday on the eve of the World Cup match between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium here. It was revealed earlier this year that the statue of Tendulkar, who turned 50 in April, would be installed inside the stadium and finishing touches to the same were being given here on Tuesday. The statue depicting the legendary batter in motion of playing a stroke is placed next to the Sachin Tendulkar stand. The inauguration ceremony of Tendulkar's statue will be attended by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, the legendary Tendulkar, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, treasurer Ashish Shelar along with officials from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), president Amol Kale, secretary Ajinkya Naik and other members of the apex council. World Cup 2023: Virat Kohli hadn't thought he would score so many hundreds

On the verge of equalling Sachin Tendulkar's record number of ODI centuries, star India batter Virat Kohli on Tuesday said he had never thought of accumulating so many runs and hundreds when he began his career. Kohli has been in terrific form with the bat in the ongoing ODI World Cup with one century and three half centuries in six matches. He scored 103 not out against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19 for his 48th ODI hundred, one short of Tendulkar's world record. He made 95 against New Zealand in Dharamsala on October 22, five runs short of matching Tendulkar's record 49 tons in ODI cricket. If we talk about cricket, I had never thought of achieving all, as in where my career is and how god has blessed me (with) such a career span and performances," Kohli told Star Sports. "I had always dreamt I'd do this, but I had never thought things would pan out this way exactly. Nobody can plan these things, the way your journey is going, and the way things unfold in front of you." "I ha

World Cup 2023: Jonathan Trott wants Afghanistan batters to score centuries

The calm and collective batting effort of the Afghanistan team has found its own set of admirers in the ongoing World Cup and head coach Jonathan Trott has set the next target for his players -- someone needs to bat deep and score a hundred in remaining three games. Enjoying their best ever performance, Afghanistan have been on a giant killing run in the ongoing 50-over showpiece with comprehensive wins over defending champions England, rivals Pakistan and 1996 winners Sri Lanka, proving that they can no longer be termed as minnows. "Nobody has got a hundred so far yet, so that's the next challenge. Someone accepts responsibility and batting for a longer period of time and make sure we get a hundred," Trott said at the press conference after Afghanistan's seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Monday. The likes of opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah have come close but haven't been able to reach the magical three figure mark in the ongoing event. "You see, a lot o
