Centre must work within boundaries of basic structure of Constitution: SC

The Supreme Court Thursday said the Centre must exercise its powers within the boundaries created by the Constitution and the Delhi government be allowed to function in its domain, saying the principles of democracy and federalism are essential features and form part of the basic structure. The significant observations were made by a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud in the judgement holding that the Delhi government has legislative and executive powers over administration of services except for public order, police and land. The Union of India must exercise its powers within the boundaries created by the Constitution. NCTD having a sui generis (unique) federal model, must be allowed to function in the domain charted for it by the Constitution, said the judgement on the issue of a festering feud over services between the ruling AAP dispensation and the Centre. India marks 25th anniversary of 1998 nuclear tests in Rajasthan's Pokhran

The 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests sent a message to the world that although India is a peace-loving nation, it would not let anyone to harm its sovereignty, integrity and unit, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday on the 25th anniversary of the tests. India conducted five nuclear tests of advanced weapon designs between May 11 and 13 at Rajasthan's Pokhran desert that propelled the country into a select group of nations having capabilities to develop nuclear weapons. The tests, carried out during the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government, were the culmination of a committed team effort and backed by the development of the necessary know-how and expertise over decades. The tests triggered strong reactions from many countries. India maintained that it carried out the tests to have 'credible minimum deterrence' and it will follow the approach of "no first use", noting that it would not be the first one to launch a nuclear weapon. In 2003, India officially came out with its

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said while the political situation in Pakistan was nothing new, the instability and uncertainty in the neighbouring country will have an impact on India. She also said that the ruling party in Pakistan, instead of fighting the opposition politically, uses agencies to put them in jail and that the "same process unfortunately is being used" in India. ICC has got no written assurance on Pak's participation in ODI WC: Reports

The International Cricket Council has got no written assurance from the Pakistan Cricket Board over its national team's participation in the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India even as impasse regarding the Asia Cup continues. "India coming to Pakistan and Pakistan going to India doesn't depend either on BCCI or PCB. So, PCB can't give any assurance to ICC about its participation in the global event. "It is the Pakistan government that will give approval just like in case of BCCI, it can only come to PCB subject to government clearance," an ICC board member privy to developments told PTI on Wednesday. Pakistan are likely to play India in Ahmedabad with bulk of their matches expected to be held in southern India cities like Bengaluru and Chennai. Meanwhile, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is all but set to shift the Asia Cup to Sri Lanka after most of the member nations decided to reject the 'Hybrid Model' idea floated by PCB chairman Najam Sethi.
