A parliamentary committee on Thursday asked the government to explore the possibility of bringing a law to govern the recruitment of 'Agniveers' in the country's armed forces. It also suggested reservation or preference for Agniveers in other government jobs to prevent any kind of "disaffection" among them. Under the Agnipath scheme, selected candidates are enrolled as Agniveers in the Indian armed forces for a period of four years. The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, in its latest report, said it enquired about the Agnipath scheme and suggested "that they may explore the possibility of bringing an Act to govern recruitment under this scheme". The panel said after serving four years on the job, 75 per cent of the soldiers will be discharged from their services and only 25 per cent would be inducted into the armed forces, as per the extant rules. An army Jawan was reported missing from Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials here said on Sunday. Javaid Ahmad Wani, a resident of Achathal area of Kulgam district, had gone missing Saturday evening, officials said. Wani, posted in Ladakh region, was on leave. Pakistan's Senate on Thursday passed a bill to amend the Pakistan Army Act, 1952 which proposes up to five years in jail for anyone who discloses sensitive information about the country's security and army. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif moved the bill titled Pakistan Army (Amendment) Act, 2023 amidst the government's efforts to prosecute former prime minister Imran Khan on the 'cypher' issue. The proposed bill states that a person who makes an unauthorised disclosure of information obtained in an official capacity for the security and benefit of Pakistan will be punished with rigorous imprisonment for up to five years. A person making a disclosure with the permission of the chief of army staff or an authorised officer will not be punished, it said. The first Permanent Aadhaar Enrolment Centre (PAEC) for Indian Army has been inaugurated in New Delhi, an official statement said on Wednesday. The PAEC will facilitate Aadhaar-related services (enrolment and updation) for tri-services personnel (Defence and civil) and their dependents through their Field Post Offices (FPO) in 48 identified locations in the country. All Command HQs, Corps HQs and selected FPOs are identified for the establishment of PAEC services. The recruitment of Gorkhas from Nepal to the Indian Army under the Agnipath scheme has been put on "pause", but the matter has not been closed, Nepal's Ambassador to India Shankar Prasad Sharma said on Monday. "The journey commenced on July 8 when the team was flagged off from Baramulla by Maj Gen Rajesh Sethi, GOC, 19 Infantry Division. Army Chief General Manoj Pande on Monday felicitated members of the tri-services contingent which participated in the Bastille Day Parade in France last week, and said they have made the armed forces and India proud. At an event held at the Manekshaw Centre here, the Army chief also said the Indian contingent who went to France has played a significant role in boosting the image of the country. "You have not only made the three services -- army, air force and navy -- proud but also made the whole nation proud," he said in his address. A fresh batch of over 9,200 pilgrims, the largest so far, left the base camp here in the early hours of Thursday for the Amarnath shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas. While 6,035 pilgrims left in a convoy of 194 vehicles for Pahalgam, another convoy of 112 vehicles carrying 3,206 pilgrims left for the Baltal base camp at 3.30 am. With this, a total of 65,544 pilgrims have left the Jammu base camp for the valley since June 30. A total to 1,46,508 pilgrims have offered prayers at the shrine since July 1. The 62-day annual pilgrimage to the 3,888-metre-high cave shrine commenced from the twin tracks of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Baltal in Ganderbal district on July 1. The yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 31.
