During Question Hour on Friday, Gehlot, also the minister in-charge of Jhunjhunu, pointed towards the opposition and said, "Like always, you named the scheme (on working women's hostels) after your 'dadi' (grandmother) Indira Gandhi in the 2023-24 budget also." The remark resulted in a heavy uproar in the House, leading to three adjournments and the suspension of six Congress MLAs including PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasara, Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Jakir Hussain, Hakam Ali and Sanjay Kumar. "Indira Gandhi was a respected prime minister of our country. I only used the word 'Dadi' (grandmother) for her, which is not inappropriate in any context," Gehlot stated during his Jhunjhunu visit on Sunday. He further said funds were not released despite ...

Kangana Ranaut, who plays the role Indira Gandhi in her new film "Emergency", said she did extensive research and now believes the former prime minister was not powerful as she had thought but "weak" and "unsure of herself". The first-time MP from Mandi, often in the headlines for her provocative comments, also said there is no director today who deserves her. I'm very proudly saying that today there is not a single director in the film industry that I want to work with because they don't have that kind of quality that I feel that they deserve me, Ranaut told PTI in a video interview ahead of the release of the much in the news Emergency. Ranaut, who has directed and produced the film that documents the 21 months of Emergency imposed in 1975 by the then prime minister, said she has empathy for Indira Gandhi and viewed as very powerful until she started working on the project. Indira Gandhi protected environment, which is under assault now: Ramesh

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday hailed former prime minister Indira Gandhi's contribution in shaping laws and institutions protecting the environment and natural heritage, which he claimed were under "systematic assault" these past few years. Ramesh's remarks came on the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi. "Today is the 107th birth anniversary of an extraordinary woman, who was not just born into history but who went on to shape it in so many ways. She would often quote the advice given by her grandfather - There are those who work and there are those who claim credit; try to be in the first group since there is far less competition there!" he said. Indira Gandhi worked untiringly but without making bombastic claims, Ramesh said. He said Indira Gandhi gave Indian science and technology a renewed push and fresh momentum - especially in agriculture, space, atomic energy and defence. Public sector giants that have done the country proud owe much to her leadership, he said.

If you stand up for yourself and speak logically, patriarchy will not stop you from achieving your dreams," she advised the women in the audience. However, she admitted that women are not facilitated adequately and that more facilitation is needed. 78th I-Day: Modi becomes PM to hoist tricolour for third highest time

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday broke the record of his immediate predecessor Manmohan Singh by hoisting the national flag from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive time. With this, Modi has become the prime minister to hoist the tricolour for the third highest time. The record lies with first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru who did the honours 17 times from 1947 to 1964. Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi holds the record of hoisting the national flag for the second highest time. She did so 16 times, just one short of her father's record. However, this was done in two different stints from 1966-1977 and 1980-1984. Manmohan Singh, who was prime minister of the Congress-led UPA government for 10 years, hoisted the national flag 10 times between 2004 and 2014. Of India's 15 prime ministers, Gulzarilal Nanda and Chandra Shekhar were the only ones who did not get a chance to hoist the tricolour even once.
