IPL Auction: Stokes best buy for CSK, MI look to secure future with Green

Chennai Super Kings management, known for its practicality and prudence, pulled off a coup by buying England Test captain and world's premier all-rounder Ben Stokes in what looks like a leadership succession plan as and when Mahendra Singh Dhoni decides to hang his boots. Mumbai Indians, a team that has been in transition in the last two years and had some baffling buys at the mega auction last season, opted to invest in Stokes' skill-set heir apparent Cameron Green. Sunrisers Hyderabad have added Harry Brooks in their roster but what they needed more was an option that stabilises their bowling line-up. IPL 2023 Auction: I didn't sleep much thinking about auction, admits Curran

An "overwhelmed" Sam Curran on Friday said he endured a sleepless and nervous night ahead of the IPL mini-auction, where he became the most expensive player in the history of the T20 league's auction after fetching a whopping Rs 18.5 crore bid from Punjab Kings here. Curran witnessed an intense bidding with Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants and Punjab Kings raising their paddles frenetically to secure the services of T20 World Cup player-of-the tournament. In the end, it was Punjab Kings that broke the bank to get Curran, who drew the highest-ever bid that bettered the previous best buy of Rs 16.25 crore that Rajasthan Royals had shelled out to grab South African all-rounder Chris Morris in 2021. "I didn't sleep much last night, was a bit excited, also nervous about how the auction was going to go. But yeah, absolutely overwhelmed and incredibly humbled that I managed to get what I did. I never had any ...

Mithali Raj keeps options open for IPL - player or mentor or owning team

Former India captain Mithali Raj is keeping her options open for the women's IPL tournament slated next year -- player or mentor or even owning a team. The BCCI recently announced that the inaugural women's IPL will take place in March next year before the men's tournament. "I am keeping that role open, whether as a player or in a franchise in some way as a mentor," she told PTI in an interview on Tuesday. "But right now, nothing is clear, there are five teams...how they are going to do, whether it's a bidding or auction, so until there is some concrete information, I am keeping pretty much all things open," said Mithali, who retired from international cricket earlier this year. Asked if owning a team is an option, she said, "Maybe, yes". Mithali recently made her debut as a commentator and termed it an "interesting phase". "I am watching cricket from a very different optics. I still do feel the nerves if it's a tight game. I still have to cross that barrier of not feeling those

IPL teams need to submit list of retained players by Nov 15: Official

The 10 IPL franchises have been asked to submit their list of retained players by November 15, a senior official of a franchise said on Sunday. It is understood that BCCI has set the ball rolling for next edition of IPL and the mini-auction will be held in the third week of December in Bengaluru. It is also learnt that even the salary cap is likely to be increased from Rs 90 to Rs 95 crore for the next season. However at the mini-auction, the franchises can bid for players with the balance amount left after what they spent during the last mega auction and also with the amount they get after releasing the players they want to give back to the auction pool. It is expected that most franchises will keep 15 core players and release the rest for them to enter the auction with at least 10 crore, if not more. Punjab Kings and CSK have Rs 3.45 and Rs 2.95 crore left respectively after the last auction while Lucknow Super Giants had exhausted their full purse. Delhi Capitals, Mumbai India
