Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for 31 projects worth Rs 13,296 crore in Jharkhand on Thursday, an official said. Serious failure of Jharkhand to prevent environmental lawlessness, says NGT

There is a serious failure of Jharkhand in preventing the continued "environmental lawlessness", the National Green Tribunal observed while hearing petitions regarding alleged violations of environmental norms by quarrying and crushing units in the Rajmahal hills. The green panel also directed the chief secretary to personally monitor compliance as there was "much to be desired in remedial action against gross continuing violations in spite of categorical orders". The tribunal was hearing petitions that claimed that stone-crushing and mining companies in the Rajmahal hills of Sahebganj district were indulging in indiscriminate mining without regard for environmental norms. The hills are blown up, huge dust is generated and air and water pollution is caused -- to the detriment of the environment and public health -- during the process, the petitions alleged. Jharkhand reports first case of H3N2, five fresh cases of Covid-19

Jharkhand reported its first case of H3N2 influenza, besides five fresh cases of COVID-19, a health department official said on Sunday. A 68-year-old woman, who was admitted to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), Jamshedpur with symptoms of cold and fever on Thursday, tested positive for influenza virus H3N2 on Saturday, the official said. Confirming the report, the Civil Surgeon of East Singhbhum district, Dr Jujhar Manjhi said the victim was kept in an isolation ward and is under observation. The victim did not have any travel history, he said. Meanwhile, state's total active cases of coronavirus reached 10 with five new cases of the disease reported on Saturday. Ranchi and West Singhbhum districts have reported two cases each, while Deoghar registered one case on Saturday. Jharkhand doctors' bodies meet health minister to discuss security, policy

The Jharkhand government on Saturday held a meeting with representatives of doctors' associations for discussing issues such as the implementation of the Medical Protection Act and an amendment to the Clinical Establishment Act. The meeting was held by state Health Minister Banna Gupta with representatives of the Jharkhand Medical Service Association (JHASA) and the state wing of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). Doctors' organisations of the state have been seeking greater protection at the workplace with amendments to the Clinical Establishment Act. They have also threatened to go on strike from March 13 over the issue. The government is working for a constructive solution to the issues, the minister said. The Jharkhand Assembly was on Saturday adjourned twice after the BJP-led opposition members created a ruckus on the issue of the new employment policy. The opposition legislators and a ruling party MLA alleged that the draft of a new employment policy was passed in the state cabinet without taking the House into confidence. They demanded that government should clarify it. A new employment policy had earlier been unanimously passed in the House but was scrapped by the High Court of Jharkhand last year. AJSU party candidate Sunita Choudhary was leading by 21,960 votes over her nearest rival Bajrang Mahto of the Congress after the ninth round of counting in the Ramgarh by-election, an official said on Thursday. The AJSU party, which has tied up with the BJP for the bypoll, got 1,04,442 votes while the Congress, an ally of the ruling JMM-led coalition, got 82,482 after the completion of the ninth round of counting, the official said. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Wednesday blamed the opposition BJP for the state's backwardness, alleging that the party has converted it into a grazing ground in the past 20 years. Over 67% polling for Jharkhand's Ramgarh assembly by-election till 5 pm

A voter turnout of over 67.96 per cent was recorded till 5 pm on Monday in the Ramgarh assembly constituency bypoll in Jharkhand, with the polling process being "peaceful", an Election Commission official said. Polling for the by-election began at 7 am amid tight security arrangements and it concluded at 5 pm. However, voters' queue was witnessed in many booths even till 5.30 pm, the official said. Ramgarh deputy commissioner (DC) Madhvi Mishra told PTI that 67.96 per cent of 3.34 lakh electors exercised their franchise in the Ramgarh assembly seat. "Voting passed off peacefully. The process to cull nearly 4,000 birds, including chickens and ducks, began in Jharkhand's Bokaro district late on Saturday evening after a bird flu outbreak was reported at a state-run poultry farm, an official said. H5N1, a type of avian influenza virus, was confirmed among a protein-rich breed of chicken, 'Kadaknath', at the farm in the Lohanchal where 800 birds died and 103 had to be culled, he said. "The process to cull a total of 3,856 birds, including chickens and ducks, began late this evening in the affected area -- 1 km radius of the farm," Institute of Animal Health & Production, Ranchi, director Dr Bipin Bihari Mahtha told PTI. He said the culling will continue on Sunday as the process is time-consuming. After birds started to die at the farm on February 2, samples were sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal for testing and the flu was confirmed, he said.
