Biden-Xi meet: US-China agree to restore some military communication

US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to restore some military-to-military communications between their armed forces as the two leaders met for hours on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco. Both sides pledged cooperation that would bring the US and China closer to resuming regular talks under what's known as the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement, which until 2020 had been used to improve safety in the air and on the sea. A senior US official said after the Biden-Xi meeting ended that the military communication agreements mean that US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin can meet with his Chinese counterpart once that person is named. The official spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity to discuss a private meeting. This also opens the door for agreements at less-senior levels, including that the commander of US Pacific forces in Hawaii can engage with counterpart theatre commanders, the official said. The

Biden, Xi meeting aimed at getting relationship back on better footing

Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping head into their big meeting at a country estate on Wednesday hoping to stabilise US-China relations after a period of tumult, but the US president also is prepared to confront his counterpart on difficult issues such as trade, Beijing's burgeoning relationship with Iran and human rights concerns. The two leaders, who will meet on the sidelines of a summit of Asian-Pacific leaders, last spoke a year ago. Since then, already fraught ties between the two economic superpowers have been further strained by the U.S. downing of a Chinese spy balloon that had traversed the continental U.S. and over differences on the self-ruled island of Taiwan, China's hacking of a Biden official's emails and other incidents. The two leaders are in California for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, but will hold their one-on-one talks at Filoli Estate, a country house and museum about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of San Francisco, according to three ...

China and US pledge to step up climate efforts ahead of Biden-Xi summit

China and the U.S. have pledged to accelerate their efforts to address climate change ahead of a major U.N. meeting on the issue, making a commitment to take steps to reduce emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases besides carbon dioxide. The joint announcement came on the eve of a summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping that is aimed at stabilizing the rocky U.S.-China relationship. Cooperation between the world's two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases is considered vital to the success of the U.N. climate talks opening in two weeks in Dubai. It wasn't clear earlier this year whether the two governments would cooperate, given a sharp deterioration in ties over other issues including technology, Taiwan and Russia's war in Ukraine. Both countries are aware of the important role they play and will work together ... to rise up to one of the greatest challenges of our time, they said in a statement released Wednesday in Beijing and Tuesday evening in Washington. India watching outcome of Biden-XI summit very closely: USISPF CEO Aghi

The summit between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping here is an important one and key global players like India will be watching its outcome very closely, the head of a top India-centric business and strategic group has said. Mukesh Aghi, CEO of the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) told PTI that it is important that communication starts between the US and China, the two largest global economies. The much-anticipated summit between Biden and Xi will take place on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, which the US is hosting in San Francisco from November 11 to 17. I think the summit is important both from President Biden's perspective and also President Xi's perspective. China is struggling with its economy. There are issues in the growth story, unemployment. And the US is going into an election, and it already has two wars going on, one in the Middle East and one in Ukraine. So, it needs a Chin

APEC Summit: Biden seeks to assert US' grip on Pacific amid global turmoil

President Joe Biden is looking to use this week's summit of Asia-Pacific leaders to show world leaders the United States has the gumption, attention span and money to focus on the region even as it grapples with a multitude of foreign and domestic policy crises. Biden's highly anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday is the main event of his four-day visit to San Francisco, where leaders from the 21 economies that make up the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum are gathering for their annual summit. The talks with Xi are of enormous importance as the leaders of the world's two biggest economies try to find a measure of stability after what's been a difficult year for U.S.-China relations. But the White House also wants to demonstrate to APEC's leaders that Biden can remain focused on the Pacific while also trying to keep the Israel-Hamas war from exploding into a broader regional conflict and to persuade Republican lawmakers to continue to spend .

Biden administration slow to act as millions booted off Medicaid: Advocates

Up to 30 million of the poorest Americans could be purged from the Medicaid programme, many the result of error-ridden state reviews that poverty experts say the Biden administration is not doing enough to stop. The projections from the health consulting firm Avalere come as states undertake a sweeping re-evaluation of the 94 million people enrolled in Medicaid, government's health insurance for the neediest Americans. A host of problems have surfaced across the country, including hours-long phone wait times in Florida, confusing government forms in Arkansas, and children wrongly dropped from coverage in Texas. Those people were destined to fail, said Trevor Hawkins, an attorney for Legal Aid of Arkansas. Hawkins helped hundreds of people navigate their Medicaid eligibility in Arkansas, as state officials worked to swiftly disenroll about 420,000 people in six months' time. He raised problems with Arkansas' process like forms that wrongly told people they needed to reapply for .

South Asian Americans have woven Diwali traditions into fabric of US: Biden

South Asian Americans have played a key role in the development of the US, President Joe Biden has said, acknowledging the role of the community that has woven Diwali traditions into the fabric of the nation. To more than one billion Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists celebrating in America and around the world, we wish you a happy Diwali, Biden said in a message. Over the course of generations, South Asian Americans have woven Diwali traditions into the fabric of our nation -- symbolising the message of seeking the light of wisdom, love, and unity over the darkness of ignorance, hate, and division, Biden said. The message posted on X, formally Twitter, on November 12 has since gone viral and has over 2.1 million views. It's a message that has helped our nation emerge stronger from the past few difficult years and matters now more than ever. On this Diwali, may we reflect on the strength of our shared light and embrace the enduring spirit of this holiday and of our nation, Biden .

US election: Nikki Haley's presidential bid gains traction, Trump leads

The 2024 presidential election campaign of Indian-American politician Nikki Haley seems to have gained momentum as several key donors from rival camps have switched to her side as she announced a USD 10 million media blitz in the early primary states of New Hampshire and Iowa, hoping to further propel the momentum. Former US President Donald Trump, however, continues to be the most popular leader in the Republican Party with an approval rating of over 60 per cent. Florida Governor comes second with nearly 14 per cent. But his popularity, which once was earlier in the 30s, has been declining over the past few months. On the other hand, riding on her impressive performances in the Republican presidential debates, Haley's popularity has been on the upswing with her approval rating now crossing double digits. Over the past week, several donors from the rival camps have moved to her side. Prominent among them include Harlan Crow and Bruce Kovner of Caxton Alternative Management. Ken ...
