Karnataka BJP strongman B S Yediyurappa on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and held discussions on the political situation in the State and its preparations for 2023 Assembly polls. The former Chief Minister met BJP national president J P Nadda and party national general secretary (Organisation) B L Santosh, too, and held discussions. SC raises ceiling limit of iron ore mining for three Karnataka districts

The Supreme Court on Friday raised the ceiling limit of iron ore mining for Ballari, Chitradurga, and Tumakuru districts in Karnataka, saying conservation of the ecology and environment must go hand in hand with the spirit of economic development. The apex court raised the ceiling limit of iron ore mining from 28 MMT to 35 MMT for Ballari district, and from 7 MMT to 15 MMT for Chitradurga and Tumkur districts. "Conservation of the ecology and the environment must go hand in hand with the spirit of economic development and the fine balance between the two goals is what is sought to be achieved even now," a bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana said. At least 9 killed, 13 injured as tempo-lorry collides in Karnataka

At least 9 people were killed and 13 others injured in a road accident near Kalambella here during early Thursday morning, Police sources said. The incident happened when a tempo collided with a lorry. The deceased are said to be daily wage workers from various parts of Raichur district and were on their way to Bengaluru, sources said. The injured have been shifted to hospital for treatment. The Tempo Trax (a multi-utility vehicle) in which the victims were travelling was said to be crowded with nearly 24 passengers, sources said, adding that the deceased include a couple of children. Home Minister Araga Jnanendra, who is also Tumakuru district in-charge, in a statement said he has spoken to the district Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police and had instructed them to see to it that necessary treatment is provided to the injured.

Criminal bills of Karnataka, Jharkhand get President Murmu's assent

The president has given his assent to two legislations of Karnataka and Jharkhand under which audio and video-recordings of evidence in criminal matters would be allowed, besides paving the way for courts to hold trials against absconding accused and punish them in their absence, officials said. The Code of Criminal Procedure (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2021 allows evidence to be recorded through audio and video means in the presence of the accused and his lawyers. The Code of Criminal Procedure (Jharkhand Amendment) Bill, 2020 facilitates courts to run trials against absconding accused and punish them in their absence. The presidential assent has been received for the two bills, a home ministry official said. Karnataka reports 1,713 Covid-19 cases, four deaths; active tally at 10,452

Karnataka on Saturday reported 1,713 fresh COVID-19 cases and four virus-related deaths, taking the total infections and fatalities to 40,40,111 and 40,166 respectively, the state health department said. In its daily COVID bulletin, the government said 1,034 people were discharged, taking the total number of recoveries to 39,89,451 till date. Active cases stood at 10,452. Bengaluru urban district alone contributed 965 fresh cases. There were 97 fresh infections in Mysuru, 65 in Chikkamagaluru, 64 in Hassan, 59 in Dharwad and, 48 each in Ballari and Belagavi. Dharwad reported two deaths while Bengaluru Rural and Mysuru reported on fatality each. The bulletin said 28 districts reported zero fatalities. The positivity rate for the day was 5.33 per cent, the bulletin stated. As many as 32,130 tests were conducted, including 24,312 RT-PCR tests. The total tests done stands at 6.84 crore till date.
