Bengaluru stampede: BJP holds protest, seeks resignation of CM, deputy CM

Karnataka BJP legislators and Parliamentarians held a protest here on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar over the stampede in Bengaluru that claimed 11 lives. The protest held in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha premises here was led by the leader of opposition in legislative assembly and council R Ashoka and Chalavadi Narayanaseamy. The BJP leaders called for legal action against the two senior Congress leaders, holding them directly responsible for the tragedy. A Shankar and E S Jairam have resigned from their respective posts as secretary and treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), taking moral responsibility for the stampede that led to the death of 11 people during RCB's IPL trophy celebrations. Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra on Thursday demanded that the state government order a probe by a sitting High Court judge into the stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations, and demanded Rs 50 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident near the stadium on Wednesday. Urging the state government to own up the responsibility for the incident, the BJP chief alleged incompetence and criminal misconduct on part of the government. Karnataka govt to formulate new SOP for mega events and celebrations

Karnataka government will formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for mega events, meetings and celebrations aimed at preventing any untoward incidents, state Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Thursday. The initiative comes in the wake of stampede near the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here on Wednesday that claimed 11 lives. 71 killed due to excessive pre-monsoon rains in Karnataka since April

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's office on Saturday said that 71 people lost their lives due to excessive pre-monsoon showers in the state since April. The pre-monsoon rains in 2025 is the highest rainfall recorded during the pre-monsoon seasons and in the month of May in the last 125 years, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a statement. The state normally receives 74 mm of rainfall in May, but the actual rainfall was 219 mm, which is 197 per cent higher than the average normal rainfall, it said. Similarly, in the pre-monsoon period of 2025 (March 1 to May 31), the state normally receives 115 mm of rainfall, but the actual rainfall was 286 mm, which is 149 per cent higher than the average normal rainfall. The rainfall, including thunderstorms and gales, was observed across the state during the 2025 pre-monsoon period (March 1 to May 31), with all districts receiving very high and above normal rainfall, the statement said.
