Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh police arrested two persons absconding for 20 years after allegedly duping people of over Rs 7 crore with ponzi schemes, an official said Saturday. A team of the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested Satishchandra Mishra (65) and Ramkrishna Dube (58), directors of a Kanpur-based firm called Galaxy Enterprises, from Lucknow, a CID statement released here informed. "The firm had over 100 branches across the country. In 1999, it lured people by promising good returns on their investments. There are 26 cheating cases against their names. They misappropriated Rs 7.8 crore," said a CID official. Mishra and Dube absconded at the time and offences were registered in several districts of Marathwada and Vidarbha, he added. Both the accused were produced before a court in Nagpur on Friday and remanded to police custody till June 25.
Three activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), a banned outfit, were sentenced to seven years' imprisonment by a local court here Saturday. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Prakash Damor found the three accused guilty under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The three convicts -- Kamruddin Nagauri aka Abdulla Raju, Hafiz Hussain aka Adnan and Safdar Nagauri -- will also have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each, additional public prosecutor Yogesh Tiwari said. The trio were found guilty under UAPA section 13 (punishment for unlawful activities). Bhopal police had seized books and other material related to SIMI from their possession in 2009, the prosecutor said.

In a freak incident, two people, including a woman techie, died after they allegedly fell down from the second floor of a pub here in suspected 'inebriated' condition, police said Saturday. They were climbing down the stairs around midnight Friday after allegedly partying with friends when they slipped and fell to the ground through a window at the end of the stairs on the second floor of the pub on Church Street, they said. According to police, the two, in their 30s, were immediately rushed to a hospital where doctors declared them brought dead. The deceased were identified as Pavan Attawar and Veda R Yadav, who was working with an IT firm. A man allegedly killed his wife by hitting her with a stone in the district after an argument between them, police said on Saturday. The incident took place on Friday night in Laxmangarh of Sikar district when Jaiprakash Naik, aged around 35, hit his wife Anju Devi with a stone after a heated argument over some issue, Station House Officer (SHO), Laxmangarh Police Station, Rammanohar said. The police were informed about the incident by the family members after which the accused was arrested on Saturday morning, the SHO said. The body has been handed over to the family after post-mortem, he said, adding that the matter is being probed.
A couple was arrested in Maharashtra's Thane district Saturday on the charge of cheating by promising loan to people under a government scheme of the municipal corporation (TMC), police said. The accused Mukesh Gaikwad (36) and his wife Vandana Gaikwad (29) promised to get loan of varying amount to at least two dozen people under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Yojana, a police official said. He said the accused promised loan to the tune of Rs 5 lakh and a subsidy of Rs 1.50-Rs 2 lakh to their victims. The duo took a commission ranging from Rs 2000 to Rs 6000 per head from the victims in January this year, the official said, adding that prima facie the accused amassed Rs 1.17 lakh by cheating. A case has been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for cheating and criminal intimidation as the couple threatened to kill themselves during questionning by police.
Manish Sharma, who shot himself after killing UP Bar Council President Darvesh Kumari Yadav, died during treatment at Medanta Hospital here on Friday.Sharma had shot himself in the head later in the evening after he had killed Yadav.He shot Yadav dead at a ceremony held to welcome her inside the Agra court premises on June 12.Yadav was elected the state Bar Council President in Prayagaraj on June 9. A tribunal headed by a Delhi High Court judge commenced its three-day proceedings at nearby Coonoor Saturday on whether there was sufficient cause to extend the ban on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) as an unlawful association. The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, presided over by Justice Mukta Gupta, heard the views of those interested in the issue related to the ban, official sources said. The hearing would be held for three days till June 24, they said. The tribunal has been holding its sittings in all states where cases against SIMI have been registered. The Centre extended the validity of the ban on SIMI for another five years by a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs on January 31 last. SIMI was banned in 2001 and since been extended from time to time.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Saturday arrested an assistant public prosecutor here for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 to 'settle' a case of cheating. Prosecutor Priti Jagtap (39), who appeared at Andheri magistrate's court, allegedly demanded money from a man against whom a case of cheating had been registered. She allegedly told him that if he paid her, she will ensure that the case was closed, an ACB official said. After he approached the ACB, a trap was laid and Jagtap was arrested while allegedly taking the money.
A service revolver and five cartridges were found missing from the 'malkhana' (strong room) of the Titawi Police Station here, days after the disappearance of 486 cartons of seized liquor from there, an official said Saturday. The revolver was found missing on Friday, police said. According to Titawi Station House Officer (SHO) Kshitij Kumar, a case under IPC Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) was registered against the strong room in-charge Rahul Kumar. The matter came to light when goods of the strong room were verified. This is third such incident at the Titawi Police Station in which either seized items were stolen or government property was found missing. A total of 486 cartons of liquor seized during raids conducted in 2017 and 2018 were found missing from the police station on June 19. Two minor girls were allegedly sexually assaulted, one of them by her father, in separate incidents in the city, police said Saturday. A 40-year-old man, an auto-rickshaw driver, allegedly sexually assaulted his daughter at Neredmet in the city on June 17 and was arrested on Thursday on a complaint by his wife, police said. A case under Indian Penal Code offence rape and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act had been registered against him. In the other incident, a 60-year-old man was arrested on the charge of sexually abusing a girl in his neighbourhood at Jagadgirigutta, the police said. He had called the girl to his house Thursday last, when her parents were not at home, under the pretext of offering fruits, and committed the alleged crime, they said. The Congress Saturday demanded inquiry by a high court judge after groundnut procured from farmers and stored at a warehouse in Kutch district of Gujarat was found to be adulterated. This 'scam', where good-quality groundnut procured at Minimum Support Price is diverted and replaced with adulterated stock, has links with the chief minister's office, the opposition party claimed. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani denied the charges, saying the procurement of groundnut was the responsibility of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), a central agency. A man and a woman were found dead in a hotel room in Amer area of Rajasthan, police said Saturday. Prime facie, it seems the man committed suicide after killing the woman, Rajendra Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Amer Police Station said. According to the hotel records, Rajat Jakhar, a resident of Alwar, checked-in with the woman on Friday. When the duo did not open the door till late Saturday morning, the hotel staff broke open the door and found the bodies lying on the bed, Singh said. The identity of the woman is yet to be ascertained, he said. The case is being probed, police added.
A 21-year old woman who married a man from a different caste was Saturday shot dead allegedly by her teenage brother in a village in Indore, police said. Bulbul had an inter-caste marriage with Kuldeep, both residents of Rawad village here, some six months back and it had enraged her family, Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Ramkumar Rai told PTI. "Bulbul and Kuldeep, who had moved out of the village after the marriage, returned to the victim's marital home on Saturday. The victim's 17-year-old brother shot her in the head at Kuldeep's home," Rai said. Bulbul was rushed to Indore Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A suburban Indianapolis man who pleaded guilty to trying to join the Islamic State group overseas has been sentenced to eight years and four months in prison. Federal prosecutors say 21-year-old Akram Musleh, of Brownsburg, also was sentenced Friday to 11 years and eight months of supervised release after he gets out of prison. Musleh was arrested on June 21, 2016, at a Greyhound bus terminal in Indianapolis while he tried to board a bus to New York, from where prosecutors say he intended to fly to Morocco before making his way to territory controlled by IS. At the time of his arrest, FBI Special Agent Michele Denise Holley said Musleh had read an article about thousands of potential terrorist targets in Indiana and then searched online for information about pressure cookers, which can be turned into bombs.

The Kotdwar Bar Association has agreed to rescind its notice restricting its members from representing in court a person accused of murdering a lawyer. Appearing on behalf of the bar association before a division bench of the Uttarakhand High Court, counsel D S Mehta said the notice preventing advocates from appearing on behalf of the accused was wrong and it will be withdrawn, the petitioner's counsel Kartikeya Hari Gupta said. The notice had been issued by the secretary of the bar association warning members of eviction if they appeared on behalf of the accused. The court of Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Alok Kumar Verma has asked the bar association to file an affidavit accordingly by July 8 when the matter is posted for the next hearing, Gupta said.
