5 drug-peddlers arrested by police in J-K

Five drug peddlers were arrested in separate operations from different districts of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said on Friday. On a specific information, a police team patrolling the highway near Sahar Khad in Kathua apprehended two drug peddlers-- Sumit Kumar and Daljeet Singh-- and seized 95 grams of heroin from them. A case was registered against the duo and further investigation is on, they said. In another case, two persons were asked to stop by the police at a checkpoint in Ramban district. However, the tried to flee but were caught by the police. Brown sugar weighing about 80 gm was recovered from Vishal Singh and Yasir Ahmed and a case was registered against them, they said. The police arrested another drug peddler-- Amit Rana-- from Panjtirthi area of Jammu city and recovered intoxicant drugs from him, they said.

Social worker held for extortion bid on Union minister Mahesh Sharma

A social worker was arrested on Friday by the Noida Police for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to extort Rs 2 crore from Union minister and BJP leader Mahesh Sharma, officials said. Usha Thakur, in her 60s, was held from her house in Sector 31 at around 10 am, a police official said. Thakur is accused of extortion, forgery and criminal conspiracy linked to a pre-election "sting operation" done by a gang helmed by a man who ran a local news channel that was shut down after demonetisation, according to the police. The gang was demanding Rs 2 crore from Sharma after threatening to make public an "objectionable" video, the officials said, adding that three people directly linked to the case were already arrested in April. Court sentences man to life imprisonment for kidnap, murder of girl

A court in Ganjam district Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering a girl. District and Sessions court Judge Bibhu Prasad Routray also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict Ganesh Moharana, Public Prosecutor Ajit Kumar Patnaik said. The court pronounced its judgement after examining 38 witnesses, he said, adding both the victim and convict belong to same village. Five years ago, Moharana had kidnapped the 16-year old girl from Golanathara village. Police found her body the next day.

Decision of foreigners tribunal will prevail over NRC order: SC

The Supreme Court Friday held that a tribunal's order declaring a person as an illegal foreigner would be binding and prevail over the government decision to exclude or include the name from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna was dealing with the question that if the name of a person, included in the NRC in Assam is deleted on the ground that he was a foreigner, then he should have a right of appeal before an appropriate forum against exclusion or dropping of his name. Justice Khanna, pronouncing the order, said that the principle of 'res-judicata' (a judicially decided issue cannot be re-agitated) would apply on the decision of foreigners tribunal and a person who has been declared an illegal immigrant cannot seek re-decision in normal circumstances. Lawyers for jailed Morocco journalist urge phone release to Khashoggi probe

Lawyers for a jailed Moroccan journalist Friday urged a UN special rapporteur to request that authorities release his phone, to retrieve an "exchange of messages" with murdered Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi. "Arbitrarily detained Moroccan journalist Taoufik Bouachrine's defence urges Agnes Callamard, UN Special Rapporteur" to make a request to the Moroccan authorities for access to Bouachrine's phone, the detained journalist's lawyers said in a statement. Contract killer arrested in Lucknow

A man from Haryana wanted in three triple murder cases was arrested by the Delhi Police's crime branch from Lucknow where he had gone to meet his girlfriend, officials said Friday. With the arrest of the accused contract killer Vijay Farmana, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana, the police claimed to have solved 11 cases of murder and various robbery, rape, attempt to murder and car jackings cases in Delhi and Haryana. According to the police, the accused had taken a contract to kill a politician in Nagaland after the general elections. In April, Farmana, along with associates Sharad Pandey and Kapil Chitania, went to the northeastern state and got a contract to kill a political leader (name not revealed), officials said, adding Pandey had taken the contract for Rs 80 lakh. Jharkhand: Missionary school head, 5 others sentenced to life imprisonment in gang-rape case

A local court Friday sentenced a missionary school head and five others to life imprisonment in connection with the gang-rape of five tribal women in Khunti district last year. Additional District Judge Rajesh Kumar pronounced life sentence to Father Alfonso Aiend, the principal of the missionary school, John Jonas Tudu alias Yusuf and Balram Samad under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 109 and 111 (abetment of crime) of IPC, Public Prosecutor Sushil Kumar Jaiswal said. 15% women candidates declare criminal cases: ADR

Of the 716 women candidates analysed in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 100 (15 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves, while 78 (11 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against their names, according to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Man sentenced to 10-years imprisonment for raping minor

A Ramgarh fast track court Friday sentenced a man to 10-years imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl in August 2017. Ramgarh Additional District Judge (I), Babita Prasad, sentenced Suraj Barla to 10-years imprisonment for rape and five years for cheating the girl of Rs 65,000. Both the sentences will run concurrently, Additional Public Prosecutor S K Shukla said here. The judge also sentenced Rajesh Munda, an associate of Barla to five years imprisonment . The court imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Barla and Rs 1,000 on Munda. According to the FIR filed with Mandu police station on August 4, 2017, Barla, and his associate took the minor to Hyderabad on the pretext of a tour plan in August that year. The minor, who hails from the same village under the Mandu block, was raped and cheated of Rs 65,000, Shukla said.

Elgar Parishad case: Provide hash value copies of docs to accused, says court

A special court here Friday directed the prosecution to provide "hash value" verified copies of documents, electronic data and images that were seized during the raids to all the accused in the Elgar Parishad case. Two accused, Surendra Gadling and Arun Ferriera, had moved an application before Additional Sessions Judge Kishor Vadane seeking copies of the data, seized from the accused during the raids. "The court today allowed our application and directed that, on May 27, two Forensic Science Laboratory officials will verify or match the hash values of the documents, copies and electronic data that were seized during the raids and will be given to the accused," said Rohan Nahar, representing some of the accused in the case. Absconding man wanted for killing elephant calf arrested

A man who was wanted for allegedly killing an elephant calf with a country bomb about three years ago was Friday caught by the forest officials here, police said. Ranga alias Rajendran was at large since July 2016, knowing he was wanted in connection with the case, the police said. Rajendran had planted the country bomb to end elephant menace in his field and an elephant calf accidentally took the explosive in its mouth resulting in an explosion, killing the animal in spite of treatment. Three people have already been arrested in the case. Rajendran was produced before court and remanded to 15 days judicial custory.

Woman sets herself, three children ablaze in Muzaffarnagar

A 35-year-old woman set herself and her three children ablaze at Umerpur village in the district Friday, said police. The children died while she was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition, said SHO Yashpal Singh. The woman, identified as Naseema, took the extreme step over a family dispute. Her parents alleged that she was being harassed by her in-laws. The woman had locked herself in a room with son Anas (9) and daughters Aisha (7) and Etah (2),police said. Guj: Mob booked for stopping Dalit man's wedding procession

A mob of around 150 people, including 16 women, from the Patidar community was Friday booked for allegedly stopping the procession of a Dalit man in Khambisar village in Modasa taluka of Gujarat's Arvalli district, police said. The incident happened on May 12 and had seen stone- pelting, leaving several people, including policemen, injured. The groom's father, Dayabhai Rathod, filed a complaint on Friday following which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, said sub inspector SF Chavda of Modasa police station. Facebook user booked for 'hate mongering' on social media

The Jammu police Friday booked a Facebook user for allegedly spreading hate messages in the city through the social media platform, said officials. The FIR was lodged after a Facebook post written by a person with user name Sandeep Sethi, were found to be provocative and hurting the religious sentiments of a particular community, they said. The case has been registered for committing offences of "hate mongering" in violation of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act at Bahu Fort police station, said officials, adding the police are trying to identify the accused.

Pune Court: Issue forensic reports of Bhima Koregaon violence to accused

Saradha scam: SC withdraws protection from arrest granted to ex-Kolkata CP Rajeev Kumar

The Supreme Court Friday withdrew protection from arrest given to former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, in which the CBI wanted to interrogate him in custody. Teenager held with 5 bullets at Delhi Metro station

A teenaged boy was Friday apprehended at a metro station here for allegedly carrying five live bullets in his bag, officials said. The juvenile was held by the CISF personnel at Mayur Vihar Phase-I metro station around 4 pm after the baggage scanner detected the bullets, they said. Olympian rower Bhokanal booked after wife complains of cruelty

Olympian and Asian Games medallist Dattu Baban Bhokanal has been booked for allegedly harassing his wife physically and mentally between December 22, 2017 and March 3 this year, a Nashik police official said Friday. Bhokanal's wife, who is a police constable with Nashik Rural police, had lodged a complaint on Thursday night following which a case was registered under sections 498 A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, an official said.
