A court in Maharashtra's Thane has acquitted four persons of charges of dacoity at the residence of a television actor here in 2016. District and Sessions Judge S B Bahalkar in his order on Tuesday said the prosecution miserably failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the charges against the accused. According to the prosecution, on the intervening night of February 3 and 4, 2016, actor Lovey Sasan, a resident of a housing society on Mira Road area here, went to her aunt's house for a party. Her neighbours called her up in the early hours of February 4, saying her house was burgled. After the actor reached home, she found that robbers had decamped with cash and jewellery worth around Rs 4.07 lakh. The prosecution told the court that the robbers beat up the housing society's watchman when he stopped them from entering the premises and also locked doors of the neighbouring houses from the outside. The Supreme Court Wednesday termed as "prima facie arbitrary" the arrest of BJP's youth wing leader Priyanka Sharma for allegedly posting morphed image of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media. The apex court's observation came after counsel for Sharma's brother mentioned the matter before it and said that despite the court's order on Tuesday the activist has not been released from jail. However, the counsel appearing for the West Bengal government told a vacation bench comprising justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna that Sharma has been released from jail at around 9:40 am on Wednesday. "This is not done. First of all the arrest was prima facie arbitrary," the bench said and warned it would issue contempt against officials concerned if Sharma is not released immediately from jail. Three women were killed when an unidentified vehicle knocked them down while they were on a morning walk in Maharashtra's Pune district on Wednesday, police said. The vehicle driver sped away after crushing the women to death near Udapur village in Junnar tehsil on Ahmednagar- Kalyan Highway, an official at Otur police station said. "It seems the incident took place between 5.30 am and 6 am when an unidentified vehicle hit the women while they were on a morning walk. All the three women died on the spot," he said. The deceased were identified as Meerabai Dhamale (60), Kamal Dhamale (65) and Changunabai Gaykar (70), all residents of Dhamalemala area in Otur town, he said. A case was registered and a search was on for the vehicle and its driver, he added.
Air India said on Wednesday it had set up a high-level inquiry to probe a sexual harassment complaint filed against a commander by one of its woman pilots. According to a complaint filed by the pilot, the incident allegedly took place on May 5 in Hyderabad where she was being trained by the commander. "As soon as the matter came to our notice, we immediately set up a high level enquiry," an Air India spokesperson said. In the complaint, the pilot has alleged that the instructor suggested that the two should have dinner at a restaurant in Hyderabad after the session was over on May 5. "We went to (a) restaurant at around 8 pm and this is where my ordeal started.... He started with telling me how depressed and unhappy he was in his married life," the complainant says in her complaint. Three directors of a Mumbai-based firm manufacturing surgical instruments have been booked for allegedly cheating an insurance company and a bank in Thane district of Maharashtra, police said Wednesday. According to a complaint filed by the New India Assurance Company Limited, it made a payment on July 31 last year of Rs 34,11,205 through a private bank here to the Bombay Surgical Company for a fire-related claim filed by it, a police spokesperson said. Later, the insurer, due to an oversight, again credited the same amount into the surgical company's account on August 7, 2018, she said quoting the complaint. However, the surgical company's officials, despite knowing about the double credit, allegedly did not return the amount to the insurer and thus, cheated the latter and the bank, the official said. A 50-year-old man was found dead inside a gated society in Thane on Wednesday.The deceased identified as Chandrasekhar Abhyankar was found lying in a room on the second floor of Suyash society situated in Thane (East).After receiving the information, a police official, RDMC and fire brigade rushed to the site with one fire engine. A court in Maharashtra's Thane has awarded seven-year rigorous imprisonment to a 26-year-old man for sodomising a minor boy in 2016. Special judge S P Gondhalekar last week pronounced the accused, Mohammad Akram Jaki Ansari, guilty under Indian Penal Code Section 377 (unnatural offences) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on the accused. The prosecution told the court that Ansari and the 12 -year-old boy were residents of the same locality in Bhiwandi town here. On December 26, 2016, the accused called the boy to his house to watch television and sodomised him. He then warned the boy against revealing the offence to anyone and gave him Rs 20 to buy a fruit drink. The boy, however, rushed home and informed his father who lodged a police complaint against the accused. The accused was arrested the next day and booked under the IPC and POCSO sections. Peace Party president Mohamed Ayub has surrendered before a court here after it issued a bailable warrant against him in connection with an alleged violation of model code conduct in 2017, police said on Wednesday. Chief judicial magistrate Rakesh Gautam released him on bail on Tuesday after furnishing two bonds of Rs 20,000. According to the prosecution, a case was registered against Ayub during the 2017 assembly election for allegedly publishing objectionable advertisement without permission. More than a month after a 23-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, a case has been registered against the two accused, police said on Wednesday. The action came on the directive of the senior superintendent of police following protests. According to the complaint, the woman was raped on April 8 at a village in Purkazi area by the accused, who also recorded a video of the incident to blackmail her, the police said. Police have registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the two accused on Tuesday. The woman has been sent for medical examination, Superintendent of Police (City) Satpal Antil said. The accused has not been arrested yet, the officer added.
A 31-year-old man was killed on Wednesday morning after his car fell into an pit dug up for drainage work in Thane city of Maharashtra, an official said. The incident took place around 6.15 am near Mulla Baug bus depot here, he said. The victim, Sachin Kakodkar, was driving his car from a housing society here towards Ghodbunder Road when the vehicle accidentally fell into the pit dug for laying a drainage pipeline, Thane's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. A civic rescue team rushed to the spot and pulled out the car from the pit, he said. Kakodkar was taken out of the car rushed to a private hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said. The drainage work was being carried out by a private contractor, he added.

A right to information activist has been shot at by four unidentified men in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Wednesday. Krishanpal had gone to the fields at Dhindhwali village on Tuesday evening when the four miscreants opened fire at him. The 35-year-old was rushed to a hospital in a serious condition, Superintendent of Police (City) Satpal Antil said. A man was injured after being shot at by an unidentified bike-borne assailant near Nawada metro station, the police said.The victim, Bobby, was walking on the street on the night of May 14, when a person opened fire at him.
