The Bangladesh government, citing security reasons has set up a new makeshift court adjacent to a prison outside Dhaka to try ailing former prime minister Khaleda Zia, serving 10-year jail term in two graft cases. Zia, 73, was sent to jail in February last year by a local court on charges of embezzling foreign donations meant for an orphanage, named after her slain husband and president Ziaur Rehman, during her premiership between 2001 and 2006. Rehman was the founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. A murder accused on the run for almost 16 years was arrested from Borivali railway station in Mumbai by Palghar police, an official said Tuesday. Kamlesh Jain (57), a resident of Bhayander here, was accused of involvement in the shooting of builder Rajesh Patange in Tulinj area on October 25, 2003, said senior inspector Jitendra Vankoti of the Palghar Crime Branch. "A total of 14 people, including Jain, were made accused in the murder case registered at Nalasopara police station at the time. While 10 were arrested, one was killed in an encounter with Mumbai police and three, including Jain, were absconding," he said. "We got a tip-off that Jain was to arrive at Borivali railway station on Monday. We kept watch and nabbed him," he said.

In a joint operation, Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department officials and Assam Rifles personnel have seized 260 gm of heroin from a house at Zuangtui area here, officials said Tuesday. The contraband was concealed inside a false ceiling in the house and one person was arrested in this connection on Monday night, officials of the Excise and Narcotics department said. The contraband, worth around Rs 9.50 lakh was reportedly smuggled from Myanmar. The accused was booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and produced before the special judge (ND and PS Act) who remanded him to a judicial custody for 14 days.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed immediate release of BJP's youth wing leader Priyanka Sharma on bail, days after she was arrested by the West Bengal police for allegedly posting a morphed image of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media. The top court directed Sharma to tender a "written apology" at the time of her release from jail for sharing the meme on Banerjee saying that freedom of speech of an individual ends when it infringes upon others' rights. : A 53-year old man was arrested here Tuesday for allegedly sexually abusing his neighbour, a 11-year old boy, police said. Muthumaran, an auto-driver, took the boy in his autorickshaw to a desolate spot and sexually assaulted him, the police said. The incident came to light when the boy returned home crying and told his parents about the abuse, they said. Based on a complaint, Muthumaran was arrested under POCSO Act, the police added.
Mumbai police Tuesday opposed the bail plea of a director of an audit firm arrested after a foot overbridge collapsed outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), saying he committed a wilful breach of rules and gave a positive report of the bridge despite having "knowledge" of its poor condition. An internal inquiry has been ordered on disclosure of classified information in the Rafale deal, the Defence Ministry has said in an RTI query. City-based Right to Information (RTI) activist Anil Galgali had filed an RTI seeking information from the Defence Ministry about the "stolen" Rafale files and action taken by the ministry in this regard. Galgali had also sought to know whether the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman were aware about the stolen files and if yes, then whether a police complaint had been filed. Replying to his query, Sushil Kumar, the deputy secretary (Air Acquisition) and CPIO Air Acquisition (Capital) Wing, stated that the ministry has ordered an internal inquiry. Two more men involved in the public thrashing of a makeup artist in Greater Noida over a salary dispute were arrested on Tuesday, police said. Accused Sohail and Shera were held early in the morning near a private college under Knowledge Park police station limits, the police said. Confirming the arrests, Superintendent of Police, Greater Noida, Vineet Jaiswal said, "The accused are being sent to jail, while the key accused in the case, Wasim, was arrested on Monday and is behind the bars." In a case of previous enmity, a four-member gang Tuesday chased and hacked two people, just a km away from the police commissionerate and district collectorate here, police said. The attack took place in full public view when a 19-year-old juvenile involved in a petty case and on bail was returning along with his friend after signing at the 2nd Judicial Magistrate court, the police said. The assailants on two motorcycles chased the juvenile and his friend for nearly 500 metres and attacked them with sickles and knives, they said. The victims fell unconscious in the middle of the road, and the gang fled, the police said. On information, police rushed to the spot and took the injured to a hospital, they said. Preliminary inquiry revealed the gang had previous enmity with the two. A search is on for the four, the police said.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the Uttar Pradesh DGP to take strict and immediate action against the accused in the reported gangrape of a domestic help, who later set herself on fire. The woman, who was "sold" for Rs 10,000 and raped by the people for whom she was forced to work as domestic help, set herself afire after the Uttar Pradesh Police officials allegedly refused to register her complaint. A woman allegedly killed her 19- year-old daughter in Pune district of Maharashtra on Tuesday after being frustrated over constant fights and arguments with her over domestic issues, police said. Sanjeevani Bobhate, 34, bludgeoned her daughter Rutuja to death with a heavy stone in the morning in Pragatinagar area of Baramati city, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Narayan Shirgavkar said. The victim eloped with a man belonging to another caste last year and later married him against the wishes of her parents, who were from a poor financial background, he said. "But within a couple of months, due to constant disputes with her husband, she returned to her parents' home," he said. Scores of sheep and goats were found dead on Tuesday in a suspected leopard attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, police said. A wild animal, believed to be a leopard, forced its entry into the cowsheds belonging to Tayoub Hussain and Abdul Rasheed at Chanderkote in the wee hours and attacked the livestock present, an official said. He said 15 sheep and goats were found dead inside the sheds, while several others were reported missing. Over a dozen domestic animals have been killed in similar attacks over the past one month in the area.
A youth has been arrested for allegedly raping a teenager in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district, police said on Tuesday. A complaint was received on Sunday evening about the incident at Harran village of Ganderbal area in central Kashmir, a police officer said. The accused, Muhammad Aasif Wani, 20, has been arrested and he belongs to the same area. A case was registered under Sections 451 and 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code and Section 4 of the POSCO Act, the officer said. A medication examination of the girl has been conducted and a special team constituted to investigate the case, the official said.
Two Nigerian men believed to be members of an internet love scam syndicate were charged in Singapore on Tuesday with recruiting local women to collect money for them, police said. Such scams, where victims part with cash after a fraudster feigns romantic interest in them, are a growing concern in the city-state with police reporting 660 cases last year. The Nigerians - identified in local news reports as Oladayo Opeyemi Awolola, 34, and Gbolahan Ayobami Awolola, 37 - were arrested by Malaysian authorities in Kuala Lumpur last month and sent to Singapore on Monday. The men allegedly recruited two Singaporean women "as money mules to receive criminal proceeds linked to internet love scams in Singapore" between 2017 and 2018, according to a police statement. The women received USD 63,000 during that period and turned the money over to syndicate members in Malaysia, police said.
