SC to hear on May 17 Atul Rai's plea seeking protection from arrest in rape case
The Supreme Court will hear on May 17 a petition filed by SP-BSP candidate from Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency, Atul Rai, seeking protection from arrest in connection with a rape case.A vacation bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna will hear Rai's plea seeking protection from arrest in connection with the case till May 23.Rai, who is an accused in the case, is absconding.In April, a college student in Varanasi had accused Rai of sexually assaulting her. The victim had alleged that she was taken by Rai to his residence on the pretext of meeting his wife.An FIR was lodged against Rai in the matter.On May 8, the Allahabad High Court had turned down Rai's plea seeking anticipatory bail. Since then, he has been absconding.
SC grants conditional bail to Bengal BJP youth wing functionary Priyanka Sharma
The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted conditional bail to West Bengal BJP functionary Priyanka Sharma who was arrested on May 10 for allegedly posting a morphed picture of state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Facebook."Subject to Priyanka Sharma tendering an apology in writing for putting up an objectionable picture on Facebook account, she shall be immediately released. At the time of release, she shall tender an apology in writing," a vacation bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna said in its order.The court also issued notice to West Bengal police over the way the 25-year-old was taken into custody.Sharma's plea was mentioned before the bench for an urgent hearing on Monday. American actress Felicity Huffman pleaded guilty on Monday for paying bribes to help her daughter gain admission to a prestigious university, avoiding what was sure to be a well-publicised trial and probably also dodging jail time. The former "Desperate Housewives" star was the latest celebrity brought down by the wide-ranging college bribery scandal that's snared a slew of wealthy American parents. In a tearful appearance before federal judge Indira Talwani in Boston, Huffman pled guilty to paying $15,000 to boost her daughter's SAT college entrance exam score. The crime is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a fine of as much as $250,000, but by admitting guilt Huffman will likely avoid those penalties. Federal prosecutors have recommended a sentence of a year's probation and a $20,000 fine, though the judge can modify the penalty if she pleases. SC refuses to consider Karti's plea seeking release of Rs 10 crore security
The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to consider Karti Chidambaram's plea seeking release of his Rs 10 crore deposit, submitted as security for travelling abroad.A Bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna asked Karti's advocate to mentioned the plea before a Bench of Chief Justice India Ranjan Gogoi as there is no urgency in the matter.Karti's counsel told the court he had taken a loan to submit the security deposit and is paying interest on it.Son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, Karti Chidambaram is facing probe in the INX Media and the Aircel Maxis cases. US states file 2nd lawsuit accusing Aurobindo Pharma, others firms for violating antitrust laws
Drug major Aurobindo Pharma Tuesday said various US states have filed a second lawsuit accusing it along with other companies in the US generic drug industry for violating antitrust laws by fixing prices. "On May 10, 2019, the Attorney General of the State of Connecticut and additional Attorneys' General of various US states filed a second lawsuit in Federal Court similarly alleging that Aurobindo and other companies in the US generic drug industry had violated antitrust laws by fixing prices and allocating customers (the "Second State AG Action")," the company said in a regulatory filing. "The Second State AG Action includes additional parties and additional products which were not referenced in the First State AG Action," the filing added. Aurobindo Pharma said it is currently reviewing the second lawsuit and said "we expect that we will be filing papers with the Federal Court in due course denying each of the relevant accusations". Maha businesman killed, body burnt; 3 held
A businessman was allegedly kidnapped and killed by some persons who later burnt the body at a forest in Palghar district of Maharashtra to hide the crime, police said on Tuesday. Three persons were arrested and a woman was detained in this connection, police spokesperson Hemant Katkar said. The police suspect the killing to be a fallout of professional rivalry, he said. Arif Shaikh, a resident of Mira Road in the neighbouring Thane district, was a supplier of machinery spare parts and owned a factory in Palghar. Last Thursday, when he was going to his factory in an auto-rickshaw, some unidentified persons allegedly kidnapped him and strangled him to death, Katkar said. Man gets five-year jail for abetting wife's suicide over dowry
A fast-track court here has sentenced a man to five years in jail for abetting wife's suicide. Judge Balraj Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict, Ajay Kumar. The woman's father-in-law Balbir Singh and mother-in-law Nirmala Devi were acquitted due to the lack of evidence, the prosecution said. Kumar's wife Pushpa had hanged self to death due to harassment for dowry at Jansath in the district on July 31, 2011. Police had registered a case against her husband and in-laws for abetting the suicide.
Woman poisons 3 children, kills self in Muzaffarnagar; boy died, two girls critical
A 35-year-old woman allegedly poisoned her three children, and herself over a family dispute at Kidwai Nagar in the district, police said Tuesday. According to SHO Anil Kaperwan, the woman and her nine-year-old son died while her two daughters, aged six and 10, were rushed to a hospital in a serious condition on Monday night. The woman first gave poison to her children and then herself took it, he said.
Delhi police nabs absconding Jaish terrorist from Srinagar
Delhi Police has arrested an alleged terrorist of Jaish-e-Mohammad carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh from Srinagar, officials said Tuesday. The accused has been identified as Abdul Majeed Baba, a resident of Magrepora district of Sopore, they said. The arrest was made on Saturday evening from Soura in downtown Srinagar, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said. Baba will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Srinagar and brought to Delhi on transit remand, police said.

Indian-origin woman convicted of killing 9-yr old stepdaughter
An Indian-origin woman in the US has been convicted by a jury of killing her nine-year old stepdaughter in 2016 and faces up to life in prison at sentencing. Shamdai Arjun, 55, of Queens, New York was convicted Friday of second-degree murder by a jury that deliberated for less than one hour before Queens Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder, who indicated that he would sentence her on June 3. St Louis Police say five people have been shot, including three who have died, following a shooting on the city's north side. Authorities say the shooting happened just before 9 pm Monday in the 4000 block of Shreve. Police said one victim is in critical condition, while another is in serious but stable condition. Delhi: Man stabbed to death for objecting to lewd remarks on daughter
A man here was stabbed to death allegedly by his neighbours after he objected to their indecent remarks and gestures directed towards his daughter, said police.The incident took place on Sunday night in Moti Nagar area of the national capital. Victim's son was also attacked and is undergoing medical treatment.Tapesh Tyagi, brother of deceased, Dhruv Raj Tyagi told ANI, "My brother and his daughter were returning from the hospital. The lane was almost blocked by 4-5 men. When he honked at them they made lewd remarks and tried to molest her. After dropping her when he went back to them, they attacked him. Ecuador will hand over to the United States documents and computer hardware which Wikileaks founder and whistleblower Julian Assange left behind at its London embassy, his lawyers said Monday. Ecuadoran public prosecutors have authorised police next Monday to search the room which the Australian occupied for seven years and seize his personal belongings, they said. They cited an e-mail from the public prosecutors dated May 8 but AFP was not able to confirm its authenticity. The belongings, including computers, mobile phones, memory sticks and other electronic devices, will then be sent to the United States as part of Ecuador's response to a request from the US Department of Justice for cooperation into its investigation into Assange, according to the e-mail.
