Man takes hostage in Mali consulate in Barcelona

A man from Mali was holding a woman hostage in the African country's consulate in Barcelona, police said today. A spokeswoman from the Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional police force in Catalonia where the seaside city is located, told AFP they received an alert mid-afternoon "that a woman was being held against her will inside Mali's consulate in Barcelona." Police officers are negotiating with him, the spokeswoman said. Spanish media said the woman being held is the wife of the honorary consul, adding the man was requesting the necessary legal papers to be able to return to Mali, but the Mossos spokeswoman would not confirm these details. It is unclear whether he is armed or not.

Infant girl in Rajasthan branded with iron rod to cure' cold & cough, hospitalised

A four-month-old girl was hospitalised in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district where she was branded with an iron rod to cure her of a severe cough and cold, police said today. The baby, Nandini, from Rama Kheda village in Bhilwara, was rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Bhilwara after her health deteriorated. A police officer said the girl was apparently branded a couple of days ago, but the matter came to light today when the doctors were informed about it. The girl was branded on her stomach and was undergoing treatment, a doctor said. The girl is suffering from pneumonia and congenital heart disease. Cases of superstitious practices like branding to cure from cold and cough is common in Bhilwara. She is undergoing treatment in the ICU ward, in-charge paediatrics at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Dr O P Agal said. A case has been registered under various IPC sections against unidentified accused on the complaint lodged by the Child Welfare Committee and further investigation is on, SHO Karoi .

SVO files chargesheet in two separate corruption cases in Jammu

The State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) today filed charge sheet against a former deputy general manager of Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC) here for raising huge assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Separately, the SVO also filed a charge sheet in the court of special judge anti-corruption against ten people, including five revenue officials, for changing the possession of over six acres of government land, a spokesman of the anti-corruption body said. He said a case under prevention of corruption act was registered against former deputy general manager of JKPCC Suresh Kumar Rekhi in 2013 for misusing his official position and earning huge amount of money through illegal means by way of commission from contractors and suppliers by even compromising the quality of work. Sex racket busted at Gurgaon mall; 9 arrested

Nine persons were arrested today for allegedly running a sex racket at a mall here, police said. Gurgaon Police PRO, Ravinder Kumar said the police received a tip off that a sex racket was being run in the Omex Mall at Sector 50 in the name of a spa centre. "A team was made and a decoy customer was sent to Oyster Spa centre. A raid was later conducted and nine persons, including six girls, were arrested," he said. Efforts are on to arrest the spa centre owner, the officer added.

Steve Wynn settled with second woman over sex allegations

Attorneys for embattled casino mogul Steve Wynn say in court documents that he brokered a settlement with a second woman who accused him of sexual misconduct more than a decade ago. The documents received earlier this month in state court in Las Vegas say Wynn recently went to the FBI to accuse the woman of trying to extort him by threatening to go public with details from the 2006 settlement. Lawyer Lisa Bloom, who represents the woman, says her client denies the extortion allegations. The Associated Press generally doesn't name people who say they are victims of sexual misconduct. Wynn resigned as chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts last month amid allegations from several women that he denied. The FBI declined to confirm today whether it has investigated.

AAP MLA Ram Chander today alleged that a cremation ground was sealed by authorities in his Bawana constituency. Raising the issue in the Delhi Assembly, Chander said dead bodies were kept lying outside the cremation ground and sought the intervention of the House seeking a direction to authorities to de-seal it. Group seeks probe of prosecutor's office over Weinstein case

An initiative started by Hollywood industry women is calling for New York's governor to investigate the Manhattan district attorney's office over a decision in 2015 not to prosecute a sex abuse case against Harvey Weinstein. Time's Up says a report in New York magazine is disturbing because it suggests the district attorney's office may have been improperly influenced by Weinstein and sought to intimidate an Italian model who accused the disgraced media mogul of groping her. She secretly recorded him in a police sting. The district attorney's office decided there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute. Time's Up says an investigation is necessary to protect the integrity of the office. Neither the district attorney's office nor the governor's office immediately commented. Weinstein's attorneys have said he denies any non-consensual contact.

Two minor brothers killed in a fire in Jammu

Two minor siblings were today charred to death after their house was gutted in a fire here, police said. Five-year-old Ishtiaq Ahmad and his three-year-old younger brother Ishfaq Ahmad were burnt to death in the fire which charred their wood and tin house at Bathindi in the outskirts of the Jammu city this evening, a police official said. Both the children were alone in the house when the fire broke out, he said. The cause of the fire was not known immediately, the spokesman said adding the charred bodies of the deceased were taken to a hospital and would be handed over to their father after legal formalities. The family hails from Kishtwar district and shifted to Jammu sometime back, the official said.

Police claimed to have busted alleged militant recruitment network

Security forces today busted an alleged a militant recruitment network involving Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) by arresting six persons allegedly luring youth to join militancy from Tral area in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. "On a specific information, police along with Army and CRPF conducted a joint operation in Tral and busted a criminal network involving JeM outfit man who were involved in recruiting youth into militant ranks,"a police spokesman said. He claimed six persons involved in the crime were arrested. They were identified as Ghulam Nabi Shah, Ishfaq Sameer Sheikh, Irfan Ahmad Mir, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, Bashir Ahmad Sheikh and Junaid Rashid Bhat, the police spokesperson claimed. "They were involved in providing logistic support and facilitating movement of militants in the general area of Tral," he said. On the disclosure of the arrested persons, incriminating materials have been recovered, he claimed adding a case was registered and investigations set in motion.

BSE suspends trading in D S Kulkarni Developers

BSE today said it has suspended trading in the shares of D S Kulkarni Developers following a directive from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in a matter related to alleged diversion of funds. The tribunal's ruling came on a petition filed by the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) seeking action against the company, its directors and related entities. In an order dated March 13, NCLT said that by having cursory look into balance sheet and profit and loss account of the firm, the figures are shown soaring from year to year, but whereas those figures are not in corroboration with ground realities. "In the notes, it is further reflecting that deposits from public is showing nil for 31.03.2017," NCLT said. "All these indicate that this company is not maintaining records as envisaged under the Companies Act," it added. In a notice, BSE said pursuant to the order passed by NCLT, trading in the securities of D S Kulkarni Developers shall be suspended with immediate effect.

Decomposed body of man found in Thane slum

A decomposed mutilated body of a man, who appears to be in his 20s, was recovered today from a shanty in a slum colony on Ghodbunder Road near here, police said. According to police, the body bore many injury marks and private parts of the victim were found severed. Police were informed about the matter by residents of Santosh Nagar Colony following a foul smell emanating from the hut of the deceased, identified as Kabir Lashkar, an official said. Laskhar, a cycle repairing mechanic, had moved into the colony only last week. The official said a woman had accompanied Lashkar earlier, who he introduced as his wife. Prima facie, police suspect it to be a case of a love affair gone sour, the official said. A case of murder has been registered against an unidentified woman, said Thane Police PRO Sukhda Narkar. HC asks EC not to issue poll notification for Nalgonda, Alampur

The Hyderabad High Court today directed the Election Commission (EC) not to issue any poll notification for six weeks in respect of the Nalgonda and Alampur (SC) Assembly constituencies, which have been declared vacant by the state legislature. Justice B Siva Sankara Rao observed that even otherwise, the EC had six months' time to notify the vacancies. The order came on a writ petition filed by Congress MLAs Komatireddy Venkata Reddy and SA Sampath Kumar, who were expelled for their alleged unruly behaviour on March 12 during the governor's address to a joint sitting of the legislature. Reddy and Kumar disputed the allegations levelled against them and claimed that their voice was being throttled for being sceptical about the state government's policies. They prayed that the action against them be revoked. CBI arrests bank officials in Rs 15 crore cheating case

The CBI has arrested two former managers of the State Bank of India, a former manager of Canara Bank and four others for allegedly defrauding a Kolkata-based SBI branch of Rs 15 crore, officials said here today. The then managers Asis Kumar Bhattacharya, SBI, Barakar Branch and Debdulal Sarkar, SBI (now retired); Eshwar Honnudike Shivanna, Canara Bank (now retired) and Bijay Kumar Agarwal, Rajesh Kumar Jain, Ajay Agarwal and Pawan Kumar Agarwala, directors of Ganpat Lal Pawan Kumar Traders Pvt Ltd were taken into custody by the CBI, they said. "CBI had registered a case on the allegation that during the year 2013-14, the directors of a Kolkata-based private company entered into a criminal conspiracy with three bank officials of the State Bank of India and the Canara Bank to defraud the SBI, Industrial Finance Branch, Kolkata, to the tune of Rs 15 crore (approx.) by discounting three bills under fake and forged Letter of Credits, purportedly issued by Canara Bank, Dena Bank and SBBJ," .

Disclosure lapses: Sebi settles cases with 6 entities

Markets regulator Sebi today settled with six entities cases related to alleged disclosure lapses after they paid over Rs 17 lakh towards settlement. According to separate Sebi orders, INEOS Styrolution Group GMBH paid Rs 11,14,932 to settle its case, while Salim Govani, Foresight Enterprises, Growsafe Securities and Indusage Advisors together paid Rs 3,55,712. Besides, Gateway Leasing dished out Rs 2,49,563 to settle its case. It was alleged that INEOS Styrolution Group GMBH had not complied with disclosures norms as required under SAST (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeovers) Regulations and PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations. Salim Govani, Foresight Enterprises, Growsafe Securities and Indusage Advisors and Gateway Leasing had made delayed disclosures and violated SAST Regulations.
