A 'D' (doubtful) voter has died in Assam after falling from his bed in a detention camp at Tezpur central jail, jail authorities said. The 'D' voter identified as Basudev Biswash (58) was rushed to Kanaklata Civil Hospital on Saturday where he was declared dead, the jail authorities said here Sunday. 'D' voter is a category of voters in Assam who are disenfranchised by the government on account of their alleged lack of proper citizenship credentials. According to Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Kumar Sanjit Krishnan, Biswash had been lodged in the detention camp since 2016. Police said they have arrested three drug traffickers and seized 34 kg ganja and electronic weighing machines from them in Muzaffarnagar district. Police also seized Rs three lakh unaccounted cash from them in Mirapur area on Sunday evening, Circle Officer Somendra Negi said. One member of the gang managed to escape. Negi said the gang was involved in supplying illegal drugs in the district.
The body of an unidentified woman was found dumped in a box at the Kasara Ghat in Thane district of Maharashtra, a police official said on Monday. Some passersby informed the police control room on Sunday about foul smell at a spot on the ghat section, he said. When the police reached the spot, they saw a big cardboard box there and on opening it, found the decomposed body having several injury marks, he said. The official said they suspect that the woman, presumably in her 50s, was killed around 10 days back and the body later dumped in the ghat area. The body was sent for postmortem to a government hospital in Sahapur area and a case registered under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), he said. A probe was underway to identify the deceased and nab the culprit, he added.
Four youths allegedly harassed a 16-year-old girl and beat up her family when they objected to them in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, a police official said Monday. The official said the accused have been absconding since the incident in Jahanpura village Sunday. According to the complaint filed with Kairana police station, the girl's mother has said that the four accused entered her home and sexually harassed her daughter. Two men were Sunday arrested for allegedly molesting a woman cyclist at Worli here, police said. The incident had occurred in the wee hours of Saturday, when the woman was on her way to Haji Ali, an official said. "The accused, who were going on a motorcycle, had touched the cyclist inappropriately and even went ahead smiling at her," he said. The woman had later lodged a complaint at Tardeo police station against the duo, following which an offence under section 354, 34 of IPC was registered, the official said. The accused were identified as Scheldon Alfred Fernandes (20) and his aide Rahul Desai (24), he said. Police also recovered their motorcycle, which they had used in the crime, the official said.
Former military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning said Sunday she again plans to refuse to testify before a grand jury about her leak of classified documents to WikiLeaks -- even if it means returning to jail. German police were investigating Sunday the deaths of three people found in a Bavarian hotel room with crossbow bolts in their bodies. The corpses, all of German citizens, and two crossbows were discovered around noon Saturday in the remote riverside hotel in the city of Passau near the Austrian border. The three were a 33-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man from Rhineland-Palatinate state and a 30-year-old woman from Lower Saxony, who had jointly booked the room on Friday. Police said there were no initial indications that anyone else was involved. Post-mortems will be carried out in coming days.

Five alleged drug peddlers were arrested along with a man who was illegally cultivating opium on his farm in separate operations in Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The opium was being grown in an agricultural field in Thandapani-Panjgrian village of Manjakote in Rajouri district, a police spokesperson said. The opium field was destroyed and the land owner, Ghulam Qadir, was arrested and booked under relevant sections of the law, he added. In a separate operation, an inter-state drug peddler, Toni Kumar, was arrested after 100 grams of heroin was seized from his possession during checking in Banihal area of Ramban district, the officer said. Kumar, a resident of Jammu, was riding a two-wheeler when he was stopped by police. He had bought the consignment from Sangam vijllage in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, the officer added. An Egyptian man was sentenced Sunday to death by hanging for a deadly attack on a Cairo church in 2017 claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group, a judicial source said. Ten people including a police officer were killed as the assailant targeted the Saint Mina Coptic church in Helwan, on the southern outskirts of Cairo. According to the authorities, the attacker was armed with an assault rifle, ammunition and a bomb he intended to detonate at the church. A man in the UK has been sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing to death his Indian-origin wife following a row on the Christmas day last year. Laurens Brand, 47, who was charged with murder, used two kitchen knives to repeatedly stab his 41-year-old wife Angela Mittal in 2018. He was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 16 years and eight months' imprisonment at a sentencing hearing at Reading Crown Court on Friday. A case has been registered against a sitting BJP MLA for holding an election meeting here and distributing t-shirts to voters without any permission, officials said Sunday.
