France releases in-law of Tunisia's Ben Ali on bail

France has released Belhassen Trabelsi, brother-in-law of ousted Tunisian president Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, on bail while it mulls a extradition request from Tunisia, sources said Sunday. Lawyers Xavier Nogueras and Marcel Ceccaldi said they had obtained Trabelsi's conditional release "owing to procedural problems", confirming news initially announced by the Tunisian justice ministry. Trabelsi, 56, who faced charges of organised money laundering and has paid 100,000 euros (USD 112,000) in bail, must remain in France and report regularly to a local police station, they added. It was the second time that an appeals court in Aix-en-Provence, southeastern France, had ordered his release from a jail in Marseille. The first time was on March 28, but before Trabelsi walked free, the Aix-en-Provence prosecutor arrested him again based on a February 2017 warrant issued by a Tunisian magistrate. Alwar gangrape case: BJP demands resignation of Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot

The BJP on Sunday alleged "failure" of law and order in Rajasthan in the wake of the Alwar gangrape incident and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. "We condemn the incident of rape of a Dalit woman recently and other cases of violence," Union minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters at a press conference. However, there was no immediate reaction from the Congress. The BJP leader alleged that the Alwar gangrape incident was "kept a secret" in the wake of voting in Rajasthan on May 6. Javadekar also alleged that besides the gangrape incident in Alwar, other cases of rape were also reported elsewhere in Rajasthan, which saw polling in two phases on April 29 and May 6. Missing woman, her three daughters found

A woman and her three daughters, who were missing since April, were found in Haridwar districtof Uttarakhand, police said Sunday. Senior Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar told reporters that the woman, along with her daughters, left the city allegedly due to atrocities by her husband and in-laws. Police have registered a case against six people including her husband and brother-in-law. Both of them were arrested.

Drug peddler arrested in Kathua

An alleged drug peddler was arrested Sunday and 4 gram of heroin was seized from his possession in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Jagdish Kumar, a resident of Jandi village in Hiranagar, was arrested by a patrolling party on Link Road near Jandi Fort, a police spokesman said. He said Kumar was booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and is presently being questioned.

Man held by customs for smuggling saffron worth Rs 33 lakh at Delhi airport

A man has been arrested by the customs officials at Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country 33 kg saffron. The accused was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai on Thursday. A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 33 kg saffron worth Rs 33 lakh, a statement issued Sunday by the customs department said. The passenger was arrested and the saffron was seized, it said.

Two constables held for taking bribe in Bundi

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Bundi, has arrested two Rajasthan Police constables posted at Dei police station for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 1,000, officials said Sunday. The accused Sunil Kumar Vishnoi (28), resident of Nagur district, and Subash Yadav (33) of Alwar district were arrested from Dei police station on Saturday afternoon, DSP, ACB, Bundi, Tarunkant Somani said. The two constables had demanded bribe amount from a complainant for settlement of a case against him and threatened with dire consequences, including time in jail, if the bribe was not paid, the official added. The complainant was identified as Jaimal Banjara, a local of Dei area, he said. The two constables were caught red-handed and the bribe amount was recovered, Somani said. Further interrogation and investigation is underway, he said.

BJP hands over representation to Raj Guv against rising crime incidents against Dalits, women

The BJP Sunday staged a demonstration and handed over a representation to Governor Kalyan Singh here against rising incidents of crime against Dalits and women in the state. A delegation of the party led by its state president, Madan Lal Saini, handed over a representation to the governor and requested him to forward a detailed report of the state government's "failure in maintaining law and order". Two members of gang supplying drugs to jail inmates arrested in Muzaffarnagar

Two members of a gang, allegedly supplying drugs for intoxication to jail inmates, have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Sunday. One of the accused, Manish Kumar, was arrested after 1,000 tablets were recovered from his possession during frisking at the district jail on Saturday, Superintendent of Police Satpal Antil said. Kumar came to the jail to meet an inmate and give him the drugs, he said. During interrogation, Kumar revealed the whereabouts of his accomplice, Raj Singh, the officer said. Singh was later arrested from Muzaffarnagar city, he added. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and a search is underway to nab the other members of the gang, the officer said.

12 Indians arrested for running illegal networking business in Nepal

Twelve Indian nationals have been arrested for allegedly running an illegal networking business and duping several people in the Himalayan nation, according to media reports. All the 12 accused, belonging to Uttar Pradesh, were arrested from a hotel in Kathmandu on Friday while organising an orientation and training programme to run the illegal networking business for around 300 Nepalis, the Himalayan Times reported. Networking business, under which money is sent to foreign countries without any legal channel, has been banned by Nepal Rastra Bank. Metropolitan Crime Range said all the suspects have been taken into custody. In Mexico, 35 bodies found in mass graves

Local authorities have discovered the remains of 35 people in mass graves in violent Jalisco state, on Mexico's central Pacific coast, officials said Saturday. Prosecutor Gerardo Octavio Solis said most of the bodies were located at a ranch in the town of Zapopan. Among the dead, "27 of the bodies had been tied up when killed. And we have two people identified at this time," Solis told a news conference. The number of dead could still rise as the forensics team wraps up processing of the site, he warned. "We are digging more than three meters deep. We are also using heavy machinery, with engineers to do structural calculations as we don't want to weaken some of the perimeter walls," he added. Solis said the skulls of seven other people and other human remains were discovered on the premises of a house located in Guadalajara, Mexico's second most populous city. West Bengal Food Supplies Minister Jyotipriyo Mullick on Saturday claimed that his car was attacked by CPI(M) activists in Birati area of North 24 Parganas district. The CPI(M) has termed the allegation as baseless. The incident took place when Mullick's convoy came in the way of a CPI(M) rally, police said. "The CPI(M) cadres damaged my car. 1 killed, 3 injured after roof of shop collapses

A 16-year-old boy was killed and three others were injured after the roof of a shop in Narela collapsed on them on Saturday, police said. Officials of a hospital informed police at 11.30 am that three injured persons have been admitted. During enquiry, it was found that four persons were working at the welding shop at Swatantra Nagar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north) Gaurav Sharma said. The roof, made of iron bars and metal sheets, collapsed when the workers were repairing its foundation for the construction of a drain by a contractor of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, he said Mohammad Mehraj (28), Juber (22) and Munna (16) were admitted to the Maharaja Agarsen Hospital, Sharma said. Munna was declared dead while the rest are being treated, the officer said, adding that another injured Irshad (20) was admitted to the Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital. No work was in progress for constructing the drain today, police said, adding a case has been registered.

Delhi woman alleges gang rape by neighbours

A 21-year-old woman has alleged that she was gang raped by two of her neighbours in their house in northeast Delhi's Seelampur area, police said Saturday. The woman claimed that the incident took place on May 4. However, she has refused to undergo a medical examination, they said. In her complaint, she said that the culprits' mother and sister called her to their home where she was offered a drink. After consuming it, she lost consciousness and woke up in a nearby park, hours later, a senior police officer said. She felt pain in her private parts and rushed back home where she reported the matter to her uncle, who helped her approach the police, the officer said. A case has been registered based on the woman's statement, police said, adding they are probing the allegations.

J&K police forms SIT to probe minor's rape

The Jammu and Kashmir Police Saturday constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the alleged rape of a minor girl in Bandipora district of the state, it said. An SIT comprising sub-divisional police officer Sumbal, station house officer Sumbal, and senior prosecuting officer has been constituted to investigate the entire case, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bandipora, Rahul Malik said. The police have already arrested a person identified as Tahir Ahmad Mir, accused of raping the three-year-old girl in Sumbal area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district. The SSP said the age confirmation of the accused will be determined on the basis of scientific medical test to be conducted by a team of senior doctors.
