2015 Anthem breach: US indicts Chinese national on hacking charges

A Chinese national was indicted on Thursday on computer hacking charges related to a campaign to breach large businesses in the United States, including a computer intrusion and data breach of Indianapolis-based health insurer Anthem Inc. (Anthem).The US Department of Justice said in a statement that the breach affected a computer system containing data on nearly 80 million people, according to an indictment unsealed on Thursday in Indianapolis, Indiana.Fujie Wang, 32, and John Doe, members of the hacking group operating in China, conducted intrusions into Anthem and three other American businesses, according to the four-count indictment in federal court in Indianapolis, where Anthem is based. However, it did not identify the other companies by name.As part of this international computer hacking scheme, the indictment alleged that beginning in February 2014, Wang and Doe used sophisticated techniques to hack into the computer networks of the 'victim businesses' without authorisation, .

Ayodhya case: SC extends time till Aug 15 for mediation process

The Supreme Court Friday extended till August 15 the time for a panel of mediators, headed by former apex court judge Justice F M I Kalifulla, to explore an amicable solution to the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute at Ayodhya. A five judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said they have received the report from Justice Kalifulla in which the panel has sought extension of time till August 15 to complete mediation proceedings. "If the mediators are optimistic about the result and are seeking time till August 15, what is the harm in granting time? This issue has been pending for years and years. Why should we not grant time," the bench also comprising Justices S A Bobde, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer told the counsel appearing for the parties. The counsel appearing for both the Hindu and Muslim parties expressed confidence over the ongoing mediation proceedings and said they are fully cooperating with the process.

Doctor, son thrashed over age-old rivalry in UP

A doctor and his son were thrashed by a group of men allegedly over age-old rivalry in Lucknow's Thakurganj area on Thursday, police said.According to the police report, dozens of goons barged into the victim's clinic, attacked him and his son and later fled the spot.After receiving the complaint, police forces from six police stations reached the spot to take control of the situation."We received a complaint that two groups are fighting here in Thackurganj area. We immediately rushed to the spot. We are asking locals about the incident and make all efforts to nab the absconding accused. Strict action will be taken against the men found guilty," said Vikas Chandra Tripathi, Superintendent of Police."A case has been filed against the attackers and the police is making effort to find the accused," he added.

25 kg gold being transported to refining firm stolen in Ker

Two motorcycle-borne men allegedly robbed gold worth over Rs 6 crore from a car at Edayar near Aluva, police said here Friday. Police have launched a manhunt for the armed men, who allegedly blocked the car, broke its windshields and attacked those inside before stealing 25 kg gold being taken to a private gold refining firm on Thursday night The robbery took place on the road near the gold refining firm at Edayar under Binanipuram police station limit at around 10 pm, police said. Two of the four car occupants were reportedly hurt in the attack.

NCB seizes 550 kg ganja in Muzaffarpur, arrests four

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested four persons and seized 550 kilograms of cannabis (ganja) from their possession in Muzaffarpur on Thursday, police said."We received information from our source that a truck loaded with ganja has been moved out from Agartala towards Bihar. During the search operation, we raided a truck and found and seized 550 kg ganja. We have arrested four people in the case," Zonal Director Narcotics Control Bureau Trilok Nath Singh told ANI.The identities of the arrested persons and the value of the seized drug are yet to be ascertained. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Ex-intelligence analyst charged with leaks to reporter

A former government intelligence analyst has been charged with leaking classified documents about military campaigns against terrorist group al-Qaeda to a reporter. Daniel Everette Hale, 31, of Nashville, Tennessee, was arrested Thursday morning. An indictment in Alexandria, Virginia, charges him under the Espionage Act with counts including obtaining and disclosing national defense information, as well as theft of government property. According to the indictment, Hale worked as an intelligence analyst for the Air Force and later as a contractor assigned to the government's National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The indictment says Hale began communications with a reporter in 2013 while at the Air Force and continued communications after going to NGA. According to the indictment, Hale provided 11 Top Secret or Secret documents to the reporter and his online news outlet. Those documents were later published either in whole or in part. 5 held for alleged bovine slaughter

Five people, including a woman, were arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur district for alleged bovine slaughter, police said Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid in a jungle near a village in Garhmukteshwar area and found bovine carcasses, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ram Mohan Singh said. Five people, including a woman, have been arrested and a case has been registered, the police said. Police are searching for 15 people who have escaped.

Cricket betting racket busted in Kolkata, 4 arrested

The Kolkata Police Thursday claimed to have busted a cricket-betting racket in the city by arresting four people and seizing over Rs 1 crore from them. Acting on a tip-off, a team of Detective Department officers conducted raids at 12 places in the city, a senior officer said. The money was seized from four places under Burrabazar Police Station and Posta Police Station area, he said, adding that four people have been arrested so far. Man gets death sentence for killing couple by pouring acid on them

A 28-year-old man was Thursday awarded death sentence by the district court here for killing a married couple by pouring acid on them. District and Sessions Judge R N Majgaonkar also ordered compensation in accordance to a Maharashtra government scheme for acid attack victims for the couple's orphaned children, aged five and eight years. The convict, Guddu Krish Yadav, was a worker at a chemical factory in Boisar MIDC near here in 2015 when the incident took place. According to the prosecution, Yadav poured concentrated sulphuric acid on his colleague Rajkumar Balram Ravidas (35) and his wife Geeta (30) when they were fast asleep in the chemical company's quarters, leading to their death. The incident was an outcome of a fight over a mobile phone. In November 2015, Yadav had stolen the mobile phone of Ravidas, who complained to their boss. The police on Thursday arrested one more accused in Alwar gang-rape case.A woman was allegedly gang-raped by five men while her husband was beaten up in Thanagaji area of Alwar district in Rajasthan on April 26.A video shot by an alleged accused, reportedly, went viral on social media.According to the police, the victim and her husband were going from village Lalwadi to Taalvraksh on a bike, when at about five men aged between 20-25 years, stopped them and took the couple to deserted sand dunes.The husband was allegedly assaulted and tied up while the woman was gang-raped. The culprits, reportedly, also threatened the couple not to report the matter to the police or they will make the video, public.The accused also demanded money from the couple which was given to them but later when they again demanded money, the couple reported the matter to the police on May 2.

HC allows Sasikala to be quizzed via video-conference

The Madras High Court Thursday allowed former AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala to appear before a court in Egmore for questioning through video conference on May 13. Justice Anand Venkatesh, disposing of the petition from Sasikala lodged in Bengaluru jail, directed her to appear before the court through video conference in connection with a case filed by the Enforcement Directorate. The case registered in 1996 relates to the alleged payments made by Sasikala, a close aide of late Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa, and co-accused Bhaskaran in violation of FERA for the purchase of a transponder facility and uplinking charges for the now-defunct JJ TV channel. An Indian Military Academy cadet, who died after sustaining injuries during a night navigation training excursion recently, is entitled to death benefit of Rs 75 lakh and it will be paid to his next of kin soon, sources said Thursday. Gentleman Cadet (GC) Amol Rawat of IMA Dehradun died on the night of May 6. Sources said, the cadet is entitled to Army Group Insurance Fund (AGIF) benefits -- a death benefit of Rs 75 lakh and and a maturity benefit of Rs 20,215, which is being paid very shortly to his next of kin. According to police, the cadet, hailing from Karnal in Haryana, accidentally fell into a gorge during the training. He had suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Military Hospital, Dehradun, where he died.

British terror suspect jailed for possessing explosives

A Kenyan court on Thursday sentenced British terror suspect Jermaine Grant to four years prison for possessing bomb-making materials, charges the accused extremist has long denied. Grant, who is accused by Kenyan authorities of ties to East Africa militant group Al-Shabaab, is already serving a separate nine-year sentence on forgery charges. The Muslim convert was arrested in Mombasa in December 2011 by police who allegedly found chemicals, batteries and switches in his possession. Police said Grant was planning a bombing campaign against hotels popular with foreign tourists. He denied the charges but was found guilty on April 24 by Chief Magistrate Evans Makori, who said there was sufficient evidence that Grant was in possession of the explosive materials. Toronto neurosurgeon who murdered wife is sentenced to life

A Toronto neurosurgeon who murdered his wife two days after she filed for divorce has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 14 years. Mohammed Shamji pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Elana Fric Shamji, a well-respected family doctor. Justice John McMahon said Thursday the case is yet another tragic instance of domestic homicide that he sees far too often. Soon to be married Dalit woman stabbed to death in market

A 19-year-old Dalit woman, who was to get married in two weeks, was stabbed to death in full public view allegedly by a man near here in Gujarat after she refused to sit on his motorcycle, police said Thursday. The shocking incident took place in Bavla town of Ahmedabad district Wednesday evening. The victim, Mittal Jadav, was stabbed multiple times by the accused, Ketan Vaghela, when she refused to go with him on his motorbike, the police said, quoting from the complaint lodged by her father Ramesh Jadav.
