An employee of a company depositing cash in ATMs was arrested Thursday for allegedly embezzling Rs 73 lakh. Cash custodian Rajeev Sachan, along with his accomplices, had on April 23 embezzled the money that was supposed to be deposited in ATMs in the city. An FIR was lodged by the security head of the cash carrying company the following day at the Link Road police station. On Thursday, Dilip Kumar, a gang member, was arrested from Uttam Nagar in Delhi and Rs 2 lakh 20 thousand were recovered from him, the police said. He confessed to helping the gang in stealing the money and said he used to wear the dress of a security guard. He said he was paid Rs 4.5 lakh, the police said. Seven accused have been nabbed and sent to jail in this case. The cash custodian and kingpin of the gang Rajeev Sachan and Salman are still at large, the police said.

The Supreme Court Thursday said it may consider releasing illegal foreigners detained in Assam detention centres' provided they are available whenever required for legal proceedings. The top court said it may impose such conditions on the detenues to be released, that they can be traced and made available at the appropriate time before the court or the authorities concerned. It asked the Assam government to work on the modalities of setting up around 1,000 foreigners tribunals for speedy disposal of cases related to illegal immigrants. A food delivery boy and an elderly man, were arrested for allegedly robbing a 76-year-old woman of cash and jewellery in west Delhi's Rajouri Garden, police said Thursday. Kamal Kant (34), a resident of Nangloi, and Om Prakash (62) of Om Vihar were arrested on Wednesday, they said. In her complaint, Saroop Kaur, a resident of Rajouri Garden, said the incident took place around 3 pm on April 23, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Monika Bhardwaj said. The complainant stated that when she opened the main gate of her house after hearing the door bell, she found a person wearing a helmet standing outside. The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to interfere with the March 7 order of the Gujarat High Court which had rejected the bail plea of former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt in connection with a two-decade-old drug seizure case. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi noted that the high court had already granted liberty to Bhatt, who is in jail since September last year, to approach again for relief in case the trial does not conclude within a period of six months. The guidelines of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) were not followed during the structural audit of the foot over bridge linking the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, which collapsed in March and claimed seven lives, a charge sheet filed by the police on Thursday said. The charge sheet was filed in the Esplanade court here against accused Neeraj Kumar Desai, whose firm had conducted the structural audit of the foot over bridge (FoB). The 709-page charge sheet, which contains the statements of 85 witnesses, said Desai's firm had mentioned in its audit report that the FoB was in a "good condition". Several guidelines of the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) pertaining to the structure of bridges were not followed during the audit. The base of the bridge was not audited, the charge sheet said. Irked over non-cooperation of embattled realtor Unitech Ltd in the forensic audit, the Supreme Court Thursday ordered withdrawal of all the facilities given to its promoters, Sanjay Chandra and his brother Ajay Chandra, who are in Tihar jail for allegedly siphoning off home buyers' money. The top court said the Chandra brothers should be treated like ordinary prisoners as per the prison manual of Tihar jail here where they have been lodged since 2017. In 2017, the apex court had directed the jail authorities to facilitate Chandras' meeting with their company officials and lawyers so that they are able to arrange the money for refunding home buyers as well as for completing the ongoing housing projects. The Kerala police chief Thursday ordered a detailed probe into the alleged manipulation of April 23 Lok Sabha postal votes of police officers. The investigation was ordered by DGP Loknath Behera after Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Teeka Ram Meena, directed him to conduct a more detailed inquiry into the charges and file a report by May 15. Behera had earlier forwarded a report prepared by the Intelligence chief on the alleged manipulation of the postal ballots of the police officers, to Meena. "Prima facie it seems like there are issues in the postal ballots. The role of the Police Association also has to be probed," Meena told reporters Thursday. A 16-year-old Pakistani girl was set ablaze allegedly by a man after she refused his marriage proposal in southwestern Punjab province, according to a media report Thursday.
