Pakistan's anti-graft court today ordered accountability bureau to present more witnesses aganist ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the corruption cases spiralling from the Panama Papers sacandal. This comes a day after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed a supplementary case against the three-time prime minister and his family over properties in London. Sharif, 68, arrived in the NAB court - his 14th appearance in Islamabad, which is conducting hearing in the three cases against him and his family. He was accompanied by daughter Maryam and son-in-law Mohammad Safdar, who are co-accused in one of the three cases. During the hearing, at least two more witnesses produced by the NAB recorded their statements. The third witness could not record his statement today. The hearing was then adjourned until January 30 and the court ordered the NAB to present more witnesses, Geo News reported. The cases were launched on September 8 following the Supreme Court verdict .

An 84-year-old farmer allegedly tried to commit suicide at the Maharashtra secretariat here as he was apparently upset over inadequate compensation granted for his land acquired for a thermal plant project. His condition is reported to be serious, an official said. Dharma Patil, from Sindakhedraja town in Buldhana district, came to the Mantralaya (secretariat) yesterday to follow up his request for higher remuneration from the state government for the acquisition of his land, his son Narendra Patil said. He later allegedly consumed a poisonous substance in the secretariat premises following which the police rushed him to St George Hospital in south Mumbai. An official at the hospital said, "Patil was admitted in the ICU after he consumed the poisonous substance. His condition is serious and we are closely monitoring his health parameters." A 19-year-old Dalit girl was burnt alive allegedly by a father-son duo in Lalganj area here, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when one Deep and his father entered the house of Mithailal and set her daughter Anju ablaze after sprinkling kerosene oil on her, they said. The victim was alone in the house at the time of the incident. She was rushed to the hospital where she died during treatment, police said. An FIR has been registered in this connection, they said, adding no arrests have been made so far.

The Supreme Court today refused to modify its earlier order which had cleared the decks for the nationwide release of 'Padmaavat', saying people must understand that orders of the top court have to be "abided with". A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said this while rejecting pleas filed by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh seeking modification in its January 18 order. The Supreme Court had paved the way for the nationwide release of 'Padmaavat' on January 25 by staying the ban on the screening in states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. "People must understand that the Supreme Court has passed an order. They must abide by it. Three persons were killed when their motorcycle collided with a trailer truck in the Bhiwandi township here in the wee hours today, police said. The victims were on way to Bhiwandi when the truck coming from the opposite direction collided with their two-wheeler at Kawad Phata around 1 am, a police official said. The three persons died on the spot, he said, adding that the bodies were sent to the IGM Hospital for postmortem. The deceased were identified as Alag Nazir Hussain (23), Mohammad Anwar Ansari (20) and Samir Farooq Ansari (20), he said. Customs officials at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport arrested a Chinese national with 15 gold bars, worth more than Rs. 52 lakhs."On the basis of suspicion, the Officers of Air Customs Preventive IGI Airport, New Delhi intercepted one Chinese national, who had arrived from Dubai on January 20", read an official statement.The gold bars that weigh 1749.5 grams were concealed in socks and special cavity made inside the waistline of the jeans worn by the passenger, it added.The gold bars have been seized under section 110 of Customs Act, 1962 and the passenger has been arrested under the provisions of Section 104 of the Customs Act 1962.An investigation is underway on the matter.

Twenty-nine-year-old Neil Howland Jr. also was sentenced Friday to four years each on five other charges, for a total sentence of 120 years. The Southeast Missourian reports that during the sentencing hearing, a judge ordered deputies to duct tape Howland's mouth closed after he would not stop interrupting the victim's husband, who was making a victim impact statement. Howland was convicted of killing his mother, Cynthia Canoy, in August 2013 at her Scott City home. He then put her body and her two pet dogs into a car, drove into a cornfield and burned the vehicle.
