A case was registered against Congress lawmaker from Rajgarh, Johari Lal Meena, here on Friday for allegedly raping a widow several times.The FIR, under section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code, was registered against the Congress MLA after a criminal complaint was filed against him in a local court.The victim, a widow, met Meena for the first time two years ago. After the first meeting, the Congress leader allegedly made several visits to the victim's home.During one such visit, reportedly when the victim was unwell, Meena, on the pretext of making her see a doctor, took her to a hotel in the temple town of Mehndipur Balaji and gave her some medicines that left her unconscious.He then raped the victim who was in an inebriated condition and was unable to stop him. The Allahabad High Court Friday awarded life term to BJP MLA Ashok Singh Chandel and nine others in a 22-year-old shootout incident in Hamirpur district in which five members of a family were killed. While partly allowing an appeal filed by the state government and complainant Rajiv Shukla, a division bench comprising Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh reversed the decision of additional sessions judge, Hamirpur dated July 15, 2002, who had acquitted all 10 accused, including Chandel. The state government as well as Shukla had challenged the decision of district and sessions judge. on 26 January, 1997 a minor altercation between local BJP leader Shukla and Chandel led to a shootout in which five persons, including Shukla's two elder brothers Rakesh, Rajesh and nephews Ambujh, Ved Nayak and Srikant Pandey died. Man batters mother to death for not giving him Rs 1 lakh

A man was arrested in Masuri town here for allegedly killing his 66-year-old mother by repeatedly hitting her with a brick for refusing to give him Rs 1 lakh, police said Friday. The incident took place on April 15 when the woman, Ramrati, was sleeping outside a room in a wheat field owned by her, they said. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Neeraj Kumar Jadaun said that on the basis of a tip-off, police arrested the accused, identified as Bhagat singh, from Ikla village in the morning. During interrogation, he confessed to killing his mother. He told police that he was in dire need of Rs 1 lakh to get his house plastered and her mother, despite "having a good bank balance", refused to give him the amount. Singh reached the field where his mother was already present to get the wheat crop harvested. He then killed his mother by hitting her thrice with a brick, police said. Man held for renting cars and selling them off

Thane police said Friday that they have arrested a 31-year-old man who is accused of cheating several car owners in the district. Soshekar Thangil alia Appu, the accused, promised car owners Rs 17,000 per month for renting out their cars to him for his travel business, and sold off the vehicles keeping them in the dark. He was arrested last week, said senior inspector Kishore Khairnar of Kasarwadavali police Station. Police found that Thangil had allegedly cheated several car owners in Mumbra, Mira Road, Nayanagar and other parts of Thane district. Thangil would allegedly sold off the cars he had rented to customers in Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and then abscond. At least five cars were seized from Gudivada of Andhra Pradesh during the probe. Police hope to recover many more cars, inspector Khairnar said.

DRI seizes China-made cigarettes

In one of the biggest seizures, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized illegal foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 2.13 crore from areas in and around Kolkata. The cigarettes were smuggled into India from Myanmar and were seized on Wednesday, a statement issued Friday by DRI said. A total of 7,39,000 cigarette sticks of WIN brand of China and ESSE LIGHTS brand of Korea valued at Rs 73.9 lakh packed in 29 sacks containing 74 cartons and loaded on a pick-up van were initially recovered from a truck terminal in Dankuni, it said. The driver of the van disclosed he had loaded the cigarettes from another truck parked inside the terminal, DRI said. A further inquiry revealed the cigarettes were brought from Guwahati for delivery in Kolkata, it said. Acting on leads derived from the preliminary investigation, immediate follow-up searches were carried out at a godown near Topsia, where the cigarettes were to be delivered, the statement said. 22-year-old mowed down by speeding DTC bus

A 22-year-old student was crushed to death by a speeding DTC bus while he was crossing the road near Nizamuddin in south Delhi, police said Friday. Honey Meena, a resident of Madangir, was a student of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Arab Ki Sarai. The Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station received information regarding the accident that occurred on Thursday at around noon, Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast), said. The injured student was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared brought dead, the DCP said. The bus was being driven rashly at a high speed by Naval Kishore Meena, a resident of Rajasthan, Biswal said, adding that the driver has been arrested. The deceased's father repairs furniture for a living while his younger brother is a student, police added.

Indian extradited to US from Singapore for multi-million dollar call centre scam

An Indian has been extradited to the US from Singapore to face charges of his involvement in a multi-million dollar India-based call centre scam that targeted Americans. Hitesh Madhubhai Patel, 42, of Ahmedabad is scheduled to be arraigned Friday before a US magistrate judge in federal court in Houston. The indictment, which was unsealed in October 2016, charged Patel and 60 other individuals and entities with general conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy. The US Justice Department said that the massive India-based telephone impersonation fraud and money laundering conspiracy defrauded thousands of US residents out of hundreds of millions of dollars. Elderly woman attacked by domestic help in Jaipur

A 65-year-old woman was attacked by her domestic help in Chitrakoot area in the city on Friday, police said. The accused, Subhash, attacked Chanda Khandelwal with scissors at her apartment and fled the scene, they said. The reason why Subhash attacked the woman was not immediately clear, police said. Khandelwal was admitted to a hospital and efforts are on to nab the accused, they added.

SC refuses to entertain petition on expeditious appointment of Rajasthan HC judges

The Labour Courts and two Central government industrial tribunals were shifted to newly-built Rouse Avenue Court Complex from the Dwarka District Court premises and will commence operations there from May 1."Labour Courts, industrial tribunals and two Central government Industrial Tribunal (CGIT) have been shifted to Rouse Avenue and will commence operations from May 1," reads a notification by the High Court Registrar General Dinesh Kumar Sharma.In 2017, all the Labour Courts and industrial tribunals were shifted from Karkarduma Court to Dwarka District Court.On April 9 this year, Additional Sessions Judge O P Saini, who was handling the 2G scam case trial, took over as judge-in-charge of the newly constructed Rouse Avenue Court complex.All the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) courts in New Delhi were also shifted to the Rouse Avenue Court Complex. There are about 20 such courts in the national capital.

Delhi Police register murder case in ND Tiwari son's death

The Delhi Police on Friday registered a murder case in connection with the death of Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, son of late Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister ND Tiwari. The case has been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The case of murder against unknown persons has been registered after the post mortem examination report suggested that Rohit's death occurred due to unnatural causes. Cowshed owner attempts suicide after worker files rape case against him

A cowshed owner allegedly attempted suicide in Nagaur district of Rajasthan after a woman worker filed a case against him accusing him of raping her, police said Friday. In the FIR filed Thursday, the woman, aged around 25, alleged that Kushal Giri had raped her on April 17 at his cowshed on the Jodhpur road, Nagaur Circle Officer (CO) Subhash Chandra said. The accused attempted suicide by hanging himself at the cowshed after he came to know about the FIR, the CO said, adding that Giri was then rushed to a hospital in Jodhpur. The complainant works at Giri's cowshed, Chandra said. The matter is being probed further, he said.

Turkey arrests two suspected UAE spies: state news agency

Turkey has arrested two men suspected of spying for the United Arab Emirates and is probing if they are tied to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder, Anadolu state news agency said on Friday. The two were detained as part of an investigation by Istanbul prosecutors into alleged spying by the Gulf state, Anadolu reported. It was not clear when they were arrested. A critic of the Saudi regime, Khashoggi was killed October 2 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a team of 15 agents sent from Riyadh. His body has never been recovered. After first denying the murder, Saudi Arabia later said rogue agents had carried out the operation. A trial of 11 suspects opened earlier this year in Saudi Arabia. Much of the case remains unclear, including the role of Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince and de facto ruler, Mohammed bin Salman.
