A man was arrested in Masuri town here for allegedly killing his 66-year-old mother by repeatedly hitting her with a brick for refusing to give him Rs 1 lakh, police said Friday. The incident took place on April 15 when the woman, Ramrati, was sleeping outside a room in a wheat field owned by her, they said. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Neeraj Kumar Jadaun said that on the basis of a tip-off, police arrested the accused, identified as Bhagat singh, from Ikla village in the morning. During interrogation, he confessed to killing his mother. Thane police said Friday that they have arrested a 31-year-old man who is accused of cheating several car owners in the district. Soshekar Thangil alia Appu, the accused, promised car owners Rs 17,000 per month for renting out their cars to him for his travel business, and sold off the vehicles keeping them in the dark. He was arrested last week, said senior inspector Kishore Khairnar of Kasarwadavali police Station. Police found that Thangil had allegedly cheated several car owners in Mumbra, Mira Road, Nayanagar and other parts of Thane district. Thangil would allegedly sold off the cars he had rented to customers in Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and then abscond. At least five cars were seized from Gudivada of Andhra Pradesh during the probe. Police hope to recover many more cars, inspector Khairnar said.
In one of the biggest seizures, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized illegal foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 2.13 crore from areas in and around Kolkata. The cigarettes were smuggled into India from Myanmar and were seized on Wednesday, a statement issued Friday by DRI said. A total of 7,39,000 cigarette sticks of WIN brand of China and ESSE LIGHTS brand of Korea valued at Rs 73.9 lakh packed in 29 sacks containing 74 cartons and loaded on a pick-up van were initially recovered from a truck terminal in Dankuni, it said. The driver of the van disclosed he had loaded the cigarettes from another truck parked inside the terminal, DRI said. A further inquiry revealed the cigarettes were brought from Guwahati for delivery in Kolkata, it said. Acting on leads derived from the preliminary investigation, immediate follow-up searches were carried out at a godown near Topsia, where the cigarettes were to be delivered, the statement said. A 22-year-old student was crushed to death by a speeding DTC bus while he was crossing the road near Nizamuddin in south Delhi, police said Friday. Honey Meena, a resident of Madangir, was a student of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Arab Ki Sarai. The Hazrat Nizamuddin Police Station received information regarding the accident that occurred on Thursday at around noon, Chinmoy Biswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast), said. The injured student was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre where he was declared brought dead, the DCP said. The bus was being driven rashly at a high speed by Naval Kishore Meena, a resident of Rajasthan, Biswal said, adding that the driver has been arrested. The Delhi Police on Friday registered a murder case in connection with the death of Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, son of late Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister ND Tiwari. A cowshed owner allegedly attempted suicide in Nagaur district of Rajasthan after a woman worker filed a case against him accusing him of raping her, police said Friday. In the FIR filed Thursday, the woman, aged around 25, alleged that Kushal Giri had raped her on April 17 at his cowshed on the Jodhpur road, Nagaur Circle Officer (CO) Subhash Chandra said. The accused attempted suicide by hanging himself at the cowshed after he came to know about the FIR, the CO said, adding that Giri was then rushed to a hospital in Jodhpur. The complainant works at Giri's cowshed, Chandra said. The matter is being probed further, he said.
Turkey has arrested two men suspected of spying for the United Arab Emirates and is probing if they are tied to Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's murder, Anadolu state news agency said on Friday. The two were detained as part of an investigation by Istanbul prosecutors into alleged spying by the Gulf state, Anadolu reported. It was not clear when they were arrested. A critic of the Saudi regime, Khashoggi was killed October 2 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by a team of 15 agents sent from Riyadh. His body has never been recovered.
