Man gets 3 years' RI for sexually harassing minor colleague

A local court Thursday sentenced a real estate company owner to three years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually harassing his 17-year-old female assistant in 2014. Additional Sessions court judge Bharti Kale held Umashankar Rao (37) guilty under IPC sections 354A (sexual harassment) and 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman) and awarded the sentence, additional public prosecutor Rakesh Tiwari said. The victim had told the court that two days after she joined the office, Rao had asked her to come for work on May 18, 2014, which was a Sunday. When she refused to come, he told her that some other colleagues would also be coming. However, when the girl reached the office, she found nobody except Rao there, Tiwari said. Two arrested for robbing businessmen in east Delhi

A man was arrested while he was trying to get away on a motorcycle after robbing two businessmen of around Rs 40 lakh in east Delhi Thursday, while three of his accomplices managed to escape, police said. Ashok and Narendar, businessmen from Ghazipur, were travelling in an auto-rickshaw when four men on two motorcycles overtook the three-wheeler in Pandav Nagar, snatched a bag containing nearly Rs 40 lakh cash from them and started to flee, they said. Police personnel on patrol spotted the accused and managed to nab one of them, while the others got away after firing at the cops, a police official said. The one who was arrested led police to another accused who used to work as a collection agent for the businessmen and had supplied information about them, he added. The collection agent was arrested and police are interrogating the duo to identify the offers, police said.

Dowry death: Husband jailed, in-laws booked for harassment

The husband of a 25-year-old woman, who had died here under mysterious circumstances three days ago, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly demanding dowry, police said. Mukesh Kumar, 28, was held while his brother and sister were also accused in the case by the family of his deceased wife, Madhu, the police said. The couple, who hails from Bihar, was staying in Bishanpura here since their marriage in June last year, according to a police official. "The woman was pregnant and not being taken care of by her husband and in-laws. They were instead harassing her for dowry," the official said, citing a complaint by Madhu's cousin. According to the complaint, Madhu's family had got a call on February 18 evening that she had fallen ill and after some time they again got a call informing them that she was being taken to a hospital in Delhi. Elderly man gets 3-year RI for molesting minor girl inside cab

A 64-year-old man was Thursday sentenced to three-years rigorous imprisonment by a POCSO court for molesting a teenage girl inside a moving taxi. The accused, Vasudev Bagayatkar, was found guilty under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and sentenced to three-years rigorous jail term by Additional Sessions Judge S J Gharat, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Sureeta Singh said. The victim, then 17 and studying in Class XI, was rescued by a journalist, who later appeared as a key prosecution witness in the case, Singh said. According to the prosecution, the incident took place in March 2015 when the girl was waiting to board a bus to reach her college at Prabhadevi in central Mumbai. Detonator, bomb material found in ST bus, driver-conductor

A detonator and other material used for making crude bombs was found in a state transport (ST) bus in Raigad district of Maharashtra, following which the driver and conductor were detained, police said Thursday. The Maharashtra Transport Department said it suspects the role of the driver and the conductor in illegally accepting the parcel that contained the detonator and crude bomb material. The material was kept under a seat, said police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kundan Gawde. The conductor, while checking the bus after its last service of the day in Rasayani area Wednesday night, found some suspicious-looking objects under a seat, and alerted the local police, he said. The police called the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), which found that there was a detonator along with electric wires, shrapnels and batteries. Delhi: Miscreants rob finance office at gunpoint

Some miscreants, armed with guns, robbed a finance office on Wednesday night in Vijay Vihar locality of North Delhi. According to the complainant Mahender Verma, 3-4 boys came to his office at 8:40 pm. 4 Supertech officials arrested for flouting NGT norms at site

Two concrete mixing plants of realty group Supertech were seized here and four of its officials arrested on Thursday for allegedly flouting the NGT's norms on pollution, the Gautam Buddh Nagar administration said. The realty group was also slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for the violations at its project site in Sector 74 area, it said. "The Supreme Court had clear directions to implement NGT's guidelines. In pursuance of that, the action was taken against Supertech builders. They had one RMC plant working on a project premises, and another just outside its boundary. "They were operating illegally and violating NGT order by production dust, etc.," City Magistrate Shailendra Kumar Mishra said. DoT commission seeks impact of SC, CCI order in Rs 3,050 cr penalty on old players

The Digital Communications Commission on Thursday asked the Department of Telecom (DoT) to inform it about bearing of orders of the Supreme Court and the Competition Commission of India on the Rs 3,050 crore penalty case of Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular. The commission, which is the highest decision-making body of the DoT and formerly known as Telecom Commission, deferred a decision on the penalty till its next meeting. "The DCC has asked DoT to come back to it after assessing bearing of SC and CCI order on Rs 3,050 crore penalty case of Airtel, Vodafone and Idea," a government official told reporters. The telecom watchdog Trai in October 2016 recommended imposing a total penalty of Rs 3,050 crore on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea for allegedly denying interconnectivity to newcomer Reliance Jio. A financier was robbed of Rs 45,000 and a gold chain at gunpoint by unidentified men who barged into his office in Rohini's Vijay Vihar area, police said Thursday. Man killed for protesting molestation of female friends

A 28-year man died after he was allegedly beaten up by members of a club when he protested the molestation of his two female friends by them in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police said Thursday. Though police was yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident, around five persons, named in the FIR lodged by the family members of the deceased, were slapped with murder charges, a senior officer of South 24 Parganas district said. Bihar MLA held with ten bullets at IGI airport

An MLA from Bihar has been apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly carrying ten bullets in his baggage, officials said Thursday. Chandrashekhar was intercepted by a CISF personnel during baggage checking on Wednesday at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) while he was about to take a flight to Patna, they said. The MLA from Madhepura could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. Ten live bullets of 3.15 bore were recovered from the passenger, the officials said. He was not allowed to take the flight and was handed over to the police as he could not produce any documents for carrying the ammunition, they said, adding that he was later booked under sections of the Arms Act. "The investigation in the case is on and the person has not been arrested till now," a senior police official said. Arms and ammunition are not allowed to be carried by passengers as per Indian aviation security rules.

Education officer booked for sexual harassment

An education officer of the Thane Zilla Parishad (ZP) has been booked on charges of sexually harassing a lady officer, police said Thursday. An offence under IPC section 354-A (sexual harassment) has been registered against the accused, Ashish Zunjarrao, at the Sahapur police station in Thane district, they said. Zunjarrao is posted at Sahapur, while the victim works with the panchayat samiti of the same town as an extension officer, the police added. The police said the 44-year-old woman officer, in her complaint, has alleged the accused had been repeatedly making sexual advances towards her. Zunjarrao also subjected her to various other forms of harassment as they worked together, the police added.
