A man was arrested in Palghar in Maharashtra for sodomising a 15-year-old boy, police said. The incident happened at around 9:30pm on February 14 in Tulinj, inspector Daniel Ben said Tuesday. The man, identified as Sarvesh Mishar (30), has been charged under section 377 (unnatural sex) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, he said.
A court here Tuesday sentenced four brothers to life imprisonment for killing a youth two years ago in Jharkhand's Dumka district. Additional District and Session Judge Taufiq-ul Hasan sentenced Budhinath Tudu, Ram Tudu, Sanatan Tudu and Somay Tudu to life imprisonment for beating 24- year-old Maheshwar Marandi to death on February, 7, 2017, in Asanboni village of Dumka district. According to a FIR that was registered on the statement of the victim's mother Maku Besra, it was stated that the four brothers had forcibly dragged Maheshwar from an immersion ceremony and beat him to death for having affair with their sister. Police had recovered the body with the help of sniffer dogs and arrested all the four accused a few days after the incident.
Two armed miscreants Tuesday fired multiple shots at a luxury car owned by a businessman in northwest Delhi's Pitampura area, police said. Inderjeet Bhatia (52), in his complaint, stated that the accused arrived in a white car and fired several rounds at his Jaguar sedan parked outside his house, they said. When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Vijayanta Arya confirmed the incident, saying, "Two unknown persons came in a white Santro car, bearing no number plate, and fired seven bullets at Bhatia's car parked near his house." Police officials suspect that the incident could be a result of business rivalry or a threat to extort money from Bhatia. The incident was captured by a CCTV camera near the residence of the complainant, police said, adding that a case was registered and an investigation launched.
A 28-year-old woman from Boisar in Palghar was arrested for allegedly killing her husband and then trying to mislead police by filing a missing complaint, an official said. An unidentified body of a man, with multiple injury marks, was found near a sewage treatment plant in the MIDC area here on February 16, police said. A probe identified the body as that of Anil Kumar Rawat (32) and also found that his wife Mamta had filed a missing person's complaint on February 13, the official said. "When we visited Rawat's house, we found blood stains. Further probe into the sequence of events leading to Rawat's death led us to Ramprakash Sonu (22) who worked in a factory in Andheri. He disclosed that Rawat had been murdered and also disclosed Mamta's role in it," the official said. A bench of justices P N Prakash and B Pugalendhi warned it would decide the matter on the basis of documents if the CBI further delayed the hearing. It criticised the CBI for not taking serious steps in the last eight years to proceed with the revision petition against the acquittal of the accused in the case related to setting afire the office of the daily here in which three employees died on May 9, 2007. The judges, who sought details from the court registry on long pending cases, found that the revision petition was pending and proceedings were affected as the accused did not get an advocate. The Madras High Court Tuesday orally directed the CBI not to "precipitate" till further orders, the trial in a special court here in the alleged illegal telephone exchange case in which former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran are the prime accused. The oral instruction was given by Justice N Anand Venkatesh during the hearing of the petition by the Maran brothers, challenging the charges framed against them by the XIV additional judge for CBI cases, R Vasanthi on January 30. Senior counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the petitioners, alleged that the judge had failed to follow the guidelines given by the Supreme Court for framing charges. A court in Balod district of Chhattisgarh has sentenced a 50-year-old man to death for raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl in 2017. Balod District and Session Judge Rajendra Pradhan gave Jhaggar Yadav the death penalty after finding him guilty under relevant sections of the IPC and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, District Prosecution Officer (DPO) M R Qureshi told PTI on Tuesday. Yadav, a resident of Dallirajhra, had kidnapped the girl on June 5, 2017, raped her at a nearby mine, bludgeoned her to death and dumped her body in the bushes, Qureshi said. He was arrested on June 7 and charged under Sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape), 363 (kidnapping) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the IPC and provisions of the POCSO Act, the officer said. On Monday, Judge Pradhan observed that the case fell in the "rarest of rare" category and handed down the capital punishment to Yadav, the DPO said.
A 15-year-old girl has alleged that she was raped by four youths for three days here, police said Tuesday. The girl was rescued by members of the district Child Welfare Committee from Cuttack Railway station, they said. CWC member Amiya Biswal quoting the girl from Bantala in Angul district said the minor was brought here on Saturday by three of her acquaintances to take part in a rally. After the rally, she was left alone at Mangalabag square from where the youths took her to a nearby house and allegedly raped her. "I somehow managed to escape from their captivity this morning and requested an auto driver to drop me at the Cuttack railway station," the girl has said in her statements to the Government Railway Police (GRP) and to the members of the CWC on Tuesday. The Punjab Police Tuesday claimed to have busted a gang allegedly involved in over 60 cases of snatching and theft in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, and arrested five of its members here. The gang was active in Patiala, Khanna, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali and Ropar areas in Punjab and Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, police said. Five members of the gang -- all under 25 years of age -- have been arrested and they hail from Patiala and were active in these areas for the last three years, they said. Police have recovered more than 50 mobiles and six motorcycles from them. Baseball bats, with which the gang members allegedly used to hit victims, have also been recovered. A man has been apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly carrying gold bars worth Rs 60 lakh in his baggage in violation of the rules, a senior official said Tuesday. They identified the man as A H Khan and said he was intercepted by the CISF personnel late Monday night at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) when he arrived from Hong Kong and was supposed to travel to Mumbai. Two gold bars, each weighing 1 kg, were recovered from his hand bag and the man was handed over to Customs officials as he could not produce required valid documents for carrying them, they said. The estimated value of the gold bars is about Rs 60 lakh, they added.
A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly duping women on matrimonial sites, police said Tuesday. Ashish Kukreti, a native of Dehradun, used to cheat women by making fake profiles on matrimonial sites. He used to befriend the victims and send them photographs of bungalows and luxurious cars, police said. The matter came to light after a woman lodged a complaint against him at the Mohan Garden police station. According to the complaint, the accused met the woman on a matrimonial site and introduced himself as one Ashok Verma. He told her that he is a businessman and his annual income is more than Rs 1 crore, she said in her complaint. Later, Kukreti asked the woman to deposit Rs 50,000 in his bank account and then stopped responding to her calls and messages. A Tanzanian court on Tuesday sentenced a Chinese woman dubbed the "Ivory Queen" to 15 years in jail for her role in trafficking tusks from more than 400 elephants. Yang Fenlan, 69, was convicted in Dar es Salaam of trafficking 860 tusks between 2000 and 2014, a haul representing the slaughter of dozens of herds of elephants. Two Tanzanian men were also found guilty for their role in the illegal commerce. They were also sentenced to 15 years each. "The prosecution proved the case against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt," Judge Huruma Shaidi told the court. The prosecution showed the two men had collected elephant tusks across Tanzania, bringing them to Frenlan. "The testimonies proved that all three accused worked hand in hand," Shaidi said. A woman and her two baby daughters were charred to death in a fire in their house in Kandhamal district Tuesday, police said. Jhilima Pradhan (26) and her daughters Sonali (3) and Rupali (9 months) were burnt alive in the incident that took place at Magarguda village shortly after the woman's labourer husband had left for work, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), G Udayagiri, J K Behera said. Hearing the cries of the children, neighbours rushed to the scene but it was too late. The house was also partially damaged in the fire, the SDPO said. Investigation is in progress to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident though some villagers claimed that the woman poured kerosene on herself and the children and set fire as she was upset due to prolonged dispute in the family, the SDPO added.
The trial of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's brother, who was arrested two years ago on charges of financial violations, opened Tuesday in Tehran, the judiciary's news website Mizan Online reported. Hossein Fereydoun, a key adviser to Rouhani, was arrested in July 2017 following long-running corruption allegations, with the judiciary saying at the time that he was the subject of "multiple investigations". At the first hearing on Tuesday Fereydoun and four associates were present in court with their lawyers for a session that lasted more than two hours, Mizan Online said. During the hearing a representative of the state prosecutor read out the indictment, it said, without giving further details. The Union Cabinet Tuesday approved promulgating an ordinance for companies law amendments to plug gaps in corporate governance and enforcement framework as well as improve the ease of doing business. A bill to replace the Companies (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, that was promulgated in November could not be passed during the last session of the current Parliament. Hence, the government has decided to promulgate the Companies (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2019. "The amendments have been brought in to address the need to impose civil liability for technical and procedural defaults of a minor nature," the government said. Further, the changes have been made to plug gaps in the corporate governance and enforcement framework covering a wide range of issues. As many as 16 minor offences have been re-categorised as "purely civil defaults" which would help de-clog special courts.
