INX Media PMLA case: ED grills Karti Chidambaram for six hours

Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, was questioned for about six hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday in connection with a money-laundering probe against him in the INX Media case. Officials said Karti was summoned to record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He was grilled a number of times in the case in the past. Karti arrived at the ED office in Jamnagar House in central Delhi at about 11 am and left shortly before 6 pm. He took about an hour-long break for lunch. It is understood that Karti was confronted with certain statements of the other accused and witnesses in the case. Officials said he might be called again for questioning. The ED had attached Karti's assets worth an estimated Rs 54 crore, located in India and abroad, in the case last year. Drug peddler held with 6 kgganja in Ghaziabad

A suspected drug peddler was arrested with 6 kg ganja in a village here, police said Thursday. S P (City) Shlok Kumar said that during routine checking, a team of Shahibabad police approached a man who was waiting for a public conveyance holding a gunny bag in his hand near Teela Shabazpur village trisection here. Upon frisking, police recovered 6 kg ganja from his possession Wednesday, he said. The accused was identified as Parvez, a resident of Lisadi gate in Meerut city. During interrogation, he disclosed that he was selling ganja in small pouches, police said. He also confessed to his long involvement in drug peddling, they said, adding that Parvez was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and sent to jail.

INX Media case: Indrani Mukerjea to turn approver, seeks lawyer

Indrani Mukerjea, former media baron booked in her daughter's murder case, has moved an application before a Delhi court to turn approver in the INX Media corruption case in which former Union minister P Chidambaram is an accused. Mukerjea, who appeared through video conference from Byculla jail where she is lodged in Sheena Bora murder case, told Special CBI Judge Sunil Rana that she needed to be pardoned, and as an accused had not engaged an advocate to represent her before it in the case. Taking note of her application, the court directed Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to appoint a legal aid counsel for Mukerjea, the former INX Media Director, and put up the matter for hearing on February 14. Besides Mukerjea and Chidambaram, the name of his son Karti has also cropped up in the case involving Rs 305 crore, which relates to Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2007 for receipt of funds by INX Media. Odisha BJP leader fails to appear before police in BJD

Senior Odisha BJP leader Golak Mohapatra Thursday failed to appear before the police in Ganjam district for questioning in connection with the murder of a BJD youth leader, citing ill health,police said. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Chhatrapur Ramesh Chandra Sethi said he will be called again for questioning in the case. Police had earlier interrogated Mohapatra, spokesperson of BJP's Odisha unit, about one-and-a-half years ago in the case relating to the murder of Laxmidutta Pradhan, BJDs youth leader on September 17, 2017, police said. Ayappa devotee body seeks recall of SC order to reserve verdict in Sabarimala case

National Ayyappa Devotees' Association Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking recall of its order which reserved verdict on pleas seeking review of an earlier judgement, allowing women of all age groups to enter the Sabarimala temple, on the ground that NADA was not allowed to advance arguments in the hearing. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi Wednesday reserved its decision on pleas seeking re-consideration of the September 28, 2018 judgement. "I am seeking recall of the yesterday's order by which the verdict was reserved on review pleas, because I was not allowed to advance oral arguments," lawyer Mathews J Nedumpara, appearing for NADA, told the bench. "You file a written arguments within three days and if we are satisfied that it requires oral hearing then we will consider," said the bench, comprising the CJI and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. Man held for killing married woman after she refused his marriage proposal

A man killed a married woman, 18 years older than him, after she rejected his marriage proposal in outer Delhi's Nangloi, police said Thursday. Shyam Yadav, a native of Pansalwa in Madhubani district of Bihar, wanted to marry 45-year-old Madhuri. Both of them worked at a shoe factory where Yadav allegedly fell in love with her. Since the woman was already married, the proposal did not interest her, they said. The woman left the job after sensing Yadav's desperation for her. This was not the end of her ordeal as Yadav started following her and eventually stabbed her to death Wednesday. Sikh lawyer alleges humiliation for carrying kirpan, SC says will look into it

The Supreme Court Thursday assured a Mumbai-based Sikh lawyer that it would look into his complaint against security officers who denied him entry into the apex court premises with kirpan. The lawyer said the Constitution guarantees him the freedom of practising the religion and he has been "humiliated, insulted, tortured" every time he visited the apex court as the security officers did not allow him to carry kirpan inside. "We will certainly look into it," a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi told lawyer Amritpal Singh Khalsa, who mentioned his complaint for redressal. The lawyer sought directions to the security department to ensure that young Sikh lawyers like him are not "humiliated and insulted" and are allowed to wear and carry kirpan in court premises. ED questions Vadra for over 6 hours in money laundering case for second day

Robert Vadra, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's brother-in-law, was questioned by Enforcement Directorate for the second day on Thursday, for over six hours, in connection with a probe into allegations he laundered money to purchase illegal foreign assets. Official sources said Vadra was required to rejoin the probe on Thursday as he needed to answer more questions on allegedly acquiring immovable assets in the United Kingdom. Corporate lobbyist Talwar's close aide granted interim protection from arrest

A woman, close aide of corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar and a suspect in a money laundering case against him, was on Thursday granted protection from arrest till February 21. Yasmin Kapoor moved the court seeking anticipatory bail, claiming that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had threatened her to take names and also convince Talwar to give names of government officials/political functionaries, failing which she would be arrested and face trouble. TV journalist moves HC for quashing of summons in criminal defamation complaint

TV journalist Arnab Goswami moved the Delhi High Court on Thursday, challenging the summons issued to him in a criminal defamation complaint filed by an advocate for allegedly making defamatory remarks on a news channel. The journalist sought quashing of the February 28, 2018 order of a magistrate, summoning him as an accused in the defamation complaint, in which advocate Vikram Singh Chauhan had claimed that he was deliberately and wilfully defamed by Goswami and others on a TV channel. Five held in connection with killing of PMK functionary

Five people have been arrested in connection with the killing of a PMK functionary near here, police said Thursday. Ramalingam was allegedly done to death on Tuesday after he questioned some people about religious conversion in the area, they said. S Nijam Ali, Sarbudeen, Rizwan, Mohamed Azarudeen and Mohamed Raiyaz have been arrested in connection with the case, police said. Ahead of Commissioner Rajeev Kumar's questioning, CBI sends more officers to Kolkata

The CBI has attached ten officers from its Delhi, Bhopal and Lucknow units to its Kolkata office, which is probing the chit fund scam cases, till February 20 to provide additional manpower during questioning of some high profile suspects, including Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar, officials said. A team of Superintendent of Police or SP Jagroop S Gusinha from its Special Unit in New Delhi accompanied by Additional SP V M Mittal, Surendra Kumar Malik, Chander Deep, Deputy SPs Atul Hajela, Alok Kumar Sahi and P K Srivastava, Inspectors Hari Shankar Chand, Ritesh Danhi and Surajit Das will camp in Kolkata, an official order said. Murder accused deported from the UAE

A 36-year-old man who was wanted in alleged murder cases by the Punjab Police and has a red corner notice against him was deported from the UAE on Thursday, officials said here. Prabhjot Singh was wanted in two cases of attempt to murder and murder in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. Cases of attempted murder on August 21, 2017 and of murder on December 6, 2017 were registered against him at Gardiwal police station, the officials said. He was allegedly involved in the killing of one Amrik Singh in Garhdiwala village on December 6. A red corner notice was issued against the 36-year old Singh on the request of the Punjab Police on December 19, 2017. He was arrested in the UAE with the help of Interpol, the UAE and the CBI, they said. The CBI, which is the national central bureau of Interpol in India, informed the Punjab Police which sent a team to the UAE. Singh was deported to India Thursday. SC raps CBI, summons Rao for transferring officer probing Bihar shelter home cases

The Supreme Court Thursday issued a contempt notice to former CBI interim director M Nageswara Rao and asked him to personally appear before it on February 12 for transferring a senior officer, heading the probe in the Bihar shelter home cases, with a warning that "only God help you". The apex court took serious note of transfer of former CBI Joint Director A K Sharma to CRPF on January 17 without its prior permission despite specific orders earlier that the probe into shelter homes cases, including the Muzaffarpur rape and sexual harassment matter, has to be supervised by him only. PML-N chief Shehbaz Sharif to be indicted in corruption case on Feb 18

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief and Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, who is currently in a jail for his alleged role in a housing scheme scam, will be indicted on February 18 in the case, a media report said Thursday. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had taken 67-year-old Sharif, the younger brother of jailed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, into custody on October 5 in the Rs 14 billion Ashiana-i-Iqbal housing project scam.
