The growing interest in electric vehicles is fuelling global demand for automotive lithium-ion batteries, it's worth noting
The explosion early on a June morning ignited a blaze that engulfed a New York City shop filled with motorized bicycles and their volatile lithium-ion batteries. Billowing smoke quickly killed four people asleep in apartments above the burning store. As the ubiquity of e-bikes has grown, so has the frequency of fires and deaths blamed on the batteries that power them, prompting a campaign to establish regulations on how the batteries are manufactured, sold, reconditioned, charged and stored. Consumer advocates and fire departments, particularly in New York City, are urging the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish mandatory safety standards and confiscate noncompliant imports when they arrive at the border or shipping ports, so that unsafe e-bikes and poorly manufactured batteries don't reach streets and endanger homes. During a forum focused on e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries held Thursday in Bethesda, Maryland, the commission's chair, Alexander D. Hoehn-Saric, sai
A Chinese mining company formally opened a USD 300 million lithium processing plant Wednesday in Zimbabwe, which has one of the world's largest reserves of the metal as demand surges globally because of its use in electric car batteries. Zimbabwe has the largest lithium reserves in Africa and has in recent years drawn investors in battery minerals from Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, although China is the dominant player. The plant opened by Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe, an arm of Chinese company Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, has a capacity to process 4.5 million metric tons of hard rock lithium into concentrate for export per year, Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa said. Mnangagwa was present for the official opening of the sprawling plant in Goromonzi, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) southeast of Zimbabwe's capital, Harare. Lithium is the mineral of the present and the future ... and value addition will position our country as an emerging and competitive player in the global

The government on Friday permitted the import of pet coke for making graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries as a feedstock and not for any other purposes. Import of pet coke for fuel purposes is completely banned. "Import of needle pet coke (NPC) is 'free' for making graphite anode material for Li-ion battery as feedstock/raw material and not for any other purposes, including use as fuel or for trade," the directorate general of foreign trade said in a notification. Lithium-ion batteries are used in electric vehicles. The DGFT, however, said that the sulphur content in the NPC should be less than 0.8 per cent, which would be monitored by state pollution control boards. It also said that the import of low-sulphur pet coke is restricted, and its imports are subject to authorisation from the directorate for use in integrated steel plants only for blending with the coking coal in recovery-type coke ovens equipped with desulphurisation plants. This is also subject to terms

Lithium-ion battery recycler Lohum on Tuesday said it has joined hands with ACKO to recycle and reuse batteries. The partnership, which is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, will help optimise the battery insurance and financing costs for the customers, Lohum said in a statement. The collaboration will benefit EV battery original Equipment Makers (OEMs) that have their products underwritten by the first-tech insurer, the company said. This will, in turn, provide easy access to domestic EV customers, battery OEMs, dealerships, and all ecosystem stakeholders to advanced aftermarket services, Lohum said. "This partnership aligns with our vision of lowering the carbon emissions of EV batteries and building customer-centric solutions across the battery materials supply chain, said Rajat Verma, Founder and CEO of Lohum. Under the partnership, the first-tech insurer will continue to provide performance warranty insurance for EV batteries to multiple

Electric vehicle maker Wardwizard Innovations and Mobility has commenced operations of its in-house lithium-ion battery assembly line with a capacity of 1 GWh, the company said on Friday. The company has accomplished the target of rolling out the first batch of assembled battery packs recently from this unit, it said. Wardwizard Innovations and Mobility in May last year announced its plan to set up a Lithium-ion cells manufacturing facility in Gujarat. Aiming to strengthen the battery infrastructure in India, the company also had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Singapore-based renewable energy management consulting firm, Sunkonnect. The facility is part of the phase-1 development of the electric vehicle ancillary cluster at Vadodara in Gujarat, the company said. It also said that the company further plans to expand its R&D operations and production of electronic components in the EV Ancillary cluster. "As we are observing rising demand for EVs, quality and safet
Lithium ion batteries used to power electric bicycles and scooters have already sparked 22 fires that caused 36 injuries and two deaths in New York City this year, four times the number of fires linked to the batteries by this time last year, officials said. On Friday, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said Mayor Eric Adams' administration is coming at this problem from every single angle, including working with the City Council and the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission on additional regulations for the batteries and educating the public on their proper use and storage. These are incredibly dangerous devices, and we must make sure that members of the community are handling them properly and using them safely, Kavanagh said at a briefing on public safety. Many of the fires blamed on the batteries have been caused by malfunctioning devices left to charge overnight and placed in a hallway or near a door where they can trap people inside a burning apartment.
