SC overturns termination of two women judges in MP, orders reinstatement

The Supreme Court on Friday set aside the orders terminating the services of two women judicial officers in Madhya Pradesh in 2023, terming the action as "punitive, arbitrary and illegal". A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and N Kotiswar Singh directed that the two officers be reinstated in service within 15 days. "The termination of these two judicial officers is punitive, arbitrary and therefore illegal," Justice Nagarathna said while pronouncing the verdict. Justice Nagarathna said the verdict also discusses issue of women in Indian judiciary. On December 17, 2024, the top court had reserved its verdict in the matter pertaining to the termination of two women judicial officers by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. On November 11, 2023, the top court had taken a suo motu cognisance of the termination of six women civil judges by the state government over their alleged unsatisfactory performance. PFC inks pact to provide Rs 26,800 crore finance to MP power utilities

State-owned Power Finance Corporation on Thursday said that it has inked an initial pact to provide Rs 26,800 crore finance to power utilities of Madhya Pradesh. This funding will support capital expenditure projects for entities such as Madhya Pradesh Power Generation Company Ltd (MPPGCL), Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Ltd (MPPTCL), and MP discoms (distribution companies), PFC said in a statement. Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Madhya Pradesh to extend financial assistance of Rs 26,800 crore to the state's power utilities, the statement said. The financial assistance will be directed towards crucial infrastructure projects, including the development of new supercritical thermal units, solar power plants, renovation and modernisation of hydropower stations, power evacuation networks, smart metering, and loss reduction initiatives under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), ensuring energy ..

Bhopal gas tragedy: SC refuses to interfere with HC order on waste disposal

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to interfere with the Madhya Pradesh High Court order on shifting toxic waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and disposing it in Pithampur area of Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and A G Masih also refused to stay Thursday's trial run of disposal of the waste from the Union Carbide India Ltd plant. It noted that experts from NEERI, NGRI and CPCB have given their views on the issues, which were considered by the high court as well as the expert panel. The bench asked aggrieved parties, including civil society members, to approach the high court which is seized of the matter. On February 25, the top court asked authorities to apprise it about the precautions taken to dispose the waste. Next step on Union Carbide waste disposal depends on SC's orders: Official

The government authorities will wait for the Supreme Court's directions before proceeding with the plan to dispose of 337 tonnes of waste from Bhopal's Union Carbide factory at a waste disposal unit in Pithampur, a senior Madhya Pradesh government official said on Tuesday. On the intervening night of December 2 and 3, 1984, highly toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal. At least 5,479 people were killed and thousands were crippled. It is considered as one of the world's biggest industrial disasters. "The next hearing in the matter of disposal of Union Carbide waste is scheduled in the Supreme Court on February 27, and we will wait for what direction the court gives in this hearing," Indore Divisional Commissioner Deepak Singh told PTI. First 'Made in India' semiconductor chip expected by 2025: Vaishnaw

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said the first 'Made in India' semi-conductor chip would be ready for production by 2025. He made the announcement on the second day of the 'Global Investors Summit 2025' organised in Bhopal. "By 2025, the first 'Made in India' semiconductor chip would be ready for production," an official release quoted the Electronics and Information Technology Minister during the event that he joined via video conference. MP aims to double startups in 5 years, earmarks Rs 100 cr for seed capital

Madhya Pradesh has set a target of doubling the number of startups in the state to 10,000 over the next five years and will set up a Rs 100 crore seed capital fund to promote new enterprises and innovations, state MSME Minister Chaitanya Kumar Kashyap said on Tuesday. The state government has framed a new transparent policy for the MSME with emphasis on ease of doing business and time-bound sanctions of projects and delivery of incentives offered by the state, he said while speaking at the Madhya Pradesh Global Investors Summit (MP GIS) 2025. "We have framed a policy for startups. Already there are 5,000 startups registered in the state and we are targetting to take it to 10,000 in the next five years," Kashyap said. Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday signed 19 MoUs in the co-operative sector with an aim to boost farmers' income while offering raw material sourcing avenue for private companies. Tech companies commit to invest Rs 25,640 crore in MP, create 183K jobs

Technology companies across segments have committed to investing Rs 25,640 crore in Madhya Pradesh that will lead to creation of over 1.83 lakh employment opportunities in the state, an official statement said on Tuesday. The commitments were received from 35 entities during the IT and Technology Summit at GIS 2025. "The state secured a total investment of Rs 25,640 crore across various technology sectors, creating approximately 1,83,400 employment opportunities," the statement issued by the Madhya Pradesh government said. MPGIS 2025: SECI commits Rs 2,500 cr investment in Madhya Pradesh

State-owned Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on Monday said it will invest Rs 2,500 crore phase-wise in renewable energy projects in Madhya Pradesh. SECI has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Madhya Pradesh government for setting up a 200 MW solar project in Dhar under the CPSU Scheme and a 1,000 MWh Battery Storage Project in the state, a company statement said. The MoU was signed at the two-day Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal. The agreement was signed by Sivakumar V Vepakomma, Director (Power Systems) SECI and Manu Srivastava, Additional Chief Secretary (NRE). The 200 MW solar project is part of a 500 MW Agreement, executed in 2023 with MP Power Management Company Ltd (MPPMCL) for 25 years under which SECI will supply the electricity to the state. The corporation has proposed a phase-wise capital expenditure of Rs 2,500 crore for the expansion and development of renewable energy in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh can potentially increase the size of its economy by 18 times to USD 2.1 trillion (Rs 248.6 lakh crore) by 2047-48, according to a report by industry body CII. In order to realise its potential, the state needs to focus on boosting the manufacturing industry and industrial expansion must take center stage, CII said. According to the report 'Envisioning Madhya Pradesh Economy@2047', the gross state domestic product (GSDP) of the state can rise to USD 2.1 trillion (Rs 248.6 lakh crore) by 2047-48, growing at a CAGR of 8.6 per cent, from the current USD 164.7 billion (Rs 13.6 lakh crore).
