Less than 1% voters opted for NOTA in MP, Raj, T'gana; 1.3% in Chhattisgarh

The counting of votes in three out of four states on Sunday showed that less than one per cent of the voters exercised the 'none of the above' (NOTA) option in the just-concluded assembly polls, according to the election commission. Assembly polls were conducted in five states and while the counting of votes in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana was held on Sunday, votes will be counted in Mizoram on Monday. In Madhya Pradesh, 0.99 per cent of the voters went for the NOTA option out of total voter turnout of 77.15 per cent. In neighbouring Chhattisgarh, 1.29 per cent of the electors pressed the NOTA button. Here, the voter turnout was 76.3 per cent. In Telangana, 0.74 per cent of the electors opted for NOTA. The state registered 71.14 per cent of voter turnout. Similarly, in Rajasthan 0.96 per cent of the voters exercised the NOTA option. It had recorded 74.62 per cent turnout. The Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra energised the Congress' rank and file but the jury is out on the electoral impact it had on the states through which it passed with the party winning Karnataka in May and now Telangana while losing the Hindi-heartland states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The assembly polls following the yatra has thrown up a mixed 2-2 result. Karnataka and Telangana went to the Congress but it suffered crushing defeats in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan at the hands of the BJP. The Congress also lost Chhattisgarh to its rival but the yatra had not passed through that state. Polls in Hind-heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and the southern state of Telangana were held between November 7 and 30, and votes were counted on Sunday. MP polls: Union minister Tomar wins from Dimani, defeats BSP candidate

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar defeated the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Balveer Singh Dandotiya by 24,461 votes in Dimani in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls. Tomar is among the three Union ministers who were fielded in the Assembly polls by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Tomar held different posts before becoming the state president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991. In 1998 and 2003, Tomar was elected from Gwalior Assembly seat and became a cabinet minister in the state government. He was appointed the state BJP president in 2006 and was on the post again between 2012 and 2014. Tomar was elected to the Lok Sabha from Morena in 2008 and again from Gwalior in 2014 and was made a minister in the Narendra Modi government. He won the general elections in 2019 from Morena and was once again made a minister at the Centre.

7-term MLA, MP LoP Govind Singh loses from Lahar seat in MP's Bhind

Madhya Pradesh leader of opposition Govind Singh lost from the Lahar seat in the Bhind district by 12,397 votes against BJP's Ambrish Sharma. Singh, a Congress leader since 1993, had won from Lahar seven times in a row. A close associate of senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, the LoP polled 62,950 votes, while BJP's Sharma emerged as the winner with 75,347 votes. Of the 230 seats in the state, the BJP has so far won 129 and is leading in 35 constituencies, according to the latest data shared by the Election Commission. The Congress won 38 seats and is ahead in 27, it said.

BJP's resounding win boosts Chouhan as leadership mulls CM choices

All the talk about the BJP looking at an alternative leadership in Madhya Pradesh receded into the background on a day Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made a strong statement about his popular acceptability as the party appeared set to retain power with a stunning two-thirds majority. The BJP had chosen to head into the assembly polls without naming a chief ministerial face in any of the states. While Chouhan has emerged as a favourite to remain at the helm in MP despite the presence of some challengers, the leadership race is wide open in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, two states where the BJP has snatched power from the Congress. Many possible contenders for the top job across the three Hindi-speaking states have not contested the assembly polls but this may not be a factor as the party has in the past placed its trust in leaders who were not a member of state assemblies, such as Yogi Adityanath in 2017.
