The Maharashtra government should implement seriously its policy to promote Marathi language, the Bombay High Court has said while directing it to henceforth hold the public prosecutor recruitment exam in the state in Marathi also. A division bench of Justices S V Gangapurwala and R N Laddha passed the order on September 7 on a petition filed by one Pratap Jadhav, seeking that the exam for the posts of public prosecutors be conducted in Marathi also instead of only English. The order was made available on Saturday. Jadhav had said he studied in Marathi since school, and that proceedings before the courts of Judicial Magistrate First Class and Civil Judge Junior Division are normally conducted in Marathi language. Marathi is a local language, he said. The high court in its order said the Maharashtra government ought to have been serious on the issue. Elgar case: Arrested activists being denied medical treatment, claim family

The family members of activists arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case claimed they were "systematically" denied medical treatment and the condition of activist Vernon Gonsalves was yet another act of "criminal negligence" of prison authorities. Gonsalves, arrested for his alleged role in the case, was recently admitted to the state-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai. As per his lawyer, the activist he had been diagnosed with dengue and was on oxygen support. The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches delivered at the Elgar Parishad conclave, held in Shaniwarwada in Pune on December 31, 2017, which police claimed triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon Bhima war memorial located on the city's outskirts. One person was killed and several others were injured in the violence. NGT directs Maharashtra govt to pay Rs 12k cr for improper waste management

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Maharashtra government to pay Rs 12,000 crore as environmental compensation for improper management of solid and liquid waste. A bench headed by chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel held that the compensation under Section 15 of the NGT Act was necessary to "remedy" the continuing damage to the environment caused due to the shortcomings in waste management. The bench, also comprising Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member Senthil Vel passed the order pursuant to the Supreme Court directions requiring the tribunal to monitor enforcement of solid and liquid waste management norms. The bench said the decision became necessary to "remedy the continuing damage to the environment". It said that fixing liability was "necessary for restoration". Maharashtra records 734 Covid-19 cases, one death; 6,578 active cases

Maharashtra on Saturday reported 734 new coronavirus infections and a single pandemic-related death, a health department report said. The tally of COVID-19 cases reported in Maharashtra so far rose to 81,10,131 and death toll increased to 1,48,285. The state witnessed a dip in daily COVID-19 cases as a day before it had reported 955 new cases and four fatalities. On Saturday the highest 444 cases were reported from the Mumbai circle, followed by Pune circle (132), Nashik circle (45), Latur circle, (44), Kolhapur (25), Nagpur circle (21), Akola circle (18) and Aurangabad circle (5). Each administrative circle comprises four-six districts. The sole death was reported from Pune circle. The number of recovered coronavirus patients rose to 79,55,268 with 1,216 patients recovering since previous evening. Maharashtra govt sanctions Rs 3,501 crore relief for rain-affected farmers

The Maharashtra government has sanctioned Rs 3,501 crore as compensation for farmers who suffered losses during heavy rains and floods in different parts of the state over the last three months, an official said on Saturday. As per a government order issued on Thursday, a compensation of Rs 13,600 per hectare will be given for loss of non-irrigated crops, Rs 27,000 per hectare for irrigated crops and Rs 36,000 per hectare for perennial crops. Farmers suffered crop losses due to floods and heavy rains witnessed in parts of the state between June and August this year, it stated. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had earlier announced that his government will hike the compensation for flood-affected persons and the cabinet had also approved the proposal. Accordingly, rain-affected farmers will get Rs 3,501 crore, including the contribution from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and the state government.

Maharashtra: Thane records 170 new Covid-19 cases; active tally at 1,537

Thane district of Maharashtra has recorded 170 new coronavirus positive cases, taking the tally of infections to 7,43,591, a health official said on Saturday. With the addition of these cases on Friday, there are now 1,537 active cases in the district, he said. As nobody succumbed to the infection during the day, the death toll remained unchanged at 11,953 and the count of recoveries stood at 7,30,684, the official added.

Maharashtra records 955 Covid-19 cases, four deaths, active cases at 7,061

Maharashtra on Friday recorded 955 new cases of coronavirus infection and four deaths. It raised the tally of infections to 81,09,397 and death toll to 1,48,284, an official from the state health department said. There was a marginal decline in infections as the state had on Thursday reported 1,076 cases besides six fatalities. The highest 518 new cases were recorded from Mumbai circle, followed by Pune circle at 255 cases, Nagpur (55), Nashik (53), Kolhapur (49), Akola (28), Aurangabad (17) and Latur circle (10). Of the latest deaths, three were reported from Mumbai circle and one from Aurangabad circle. As many as 972 patients recovered from the infection since previous evening, taking the count of recoveries to 79,54,052. The state currently has 7,061 active COVID-19 cases, of which Mumbai alone accounts for 2,085, followed by 1,721 and 1,532 cases in Pune and Thane districts. The recovery rate of the state is 98.08 per cent, while the fatality rate stands at 1.82 per cent.

Maharashtra on Thursday registered 1,076 fresh cases of COVID-19 and six new deaths linked to the infection, taking the overall tally to 81,08,442 and the toll to 1,48,280, said a state health department official. The state on Wednesday had reported 1,094 cases and five deaths related to the viral infection. As many as 1,031 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, pushing up their cumulative count to 79,53,080 and leaving the state with an active caseload of 7,082, he said. The state's coronavirus recovery rate was 98.08 per cent, while the fatality rate stood at 1.82 per cent, the official said. Mumbai logs 316 new Covid cases, three deaths; active count 2,218

Mumbai on Wednesday reported 316 new coronavirus positive cases and three fresh fatalities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. With this, the infection tally grew to 11,47,041, while the death toll increased to 19,714, it said in a bulletin. On Tuesday, the country's financial capital had recorded 285 COVID-19 cases and zero fatality. The city has been reporting more than 200 cases daily since the beginning of September. The active case count went below the 2,500-mark with 2,218 such cases. A day ago, there were 2,540 active cases.
