Manchester City forward Erling Haaland is set for a long spell on the sidelines due to his ankle injury in the FA Cup quarterfinal win. Haaland had just scored his 30th goal of the season on Sunday against Bournemouth when he was hurt in a challenge by midfielder Lewis Cook. After scans on Monday, City said Haaland will see a specialist to determine the full extent of the injury. The only timeframe City gave for Haaland's recovery was that he should be fit before the end of the season. City is in a fight to qualify for the Champions League next season. It is fifth in the Premier League, outside the top four qualifying spots, with nine rounds remaining. There's also the FA Cup semifinal against Nottingham Forest at Wembley on April 26. "Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain a full prognosis," City said on its website. "The expectation is that Erling will be fit in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season, including this summer's FIFA Club World Cup.
Manchester City is the only thing standing in the way of a soccer fairy tale in the FA Cup. Take away City the behemoth of the English game over the past decade and the clubs remaining in the famous old competition heading into this weekend's quarterfinals have not won a major trophy between them this century. Heck, four of them have never won any major silverware. What a chance, then, for Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, Preston, Aston Villa and Bournemouth to create some history and spark some more life into English soccer. In the modern-day English game, trophies and titles are typically concentrated in the hands of a few clubs. Leicester (2016) is the only team outside a group of five Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to have won the Premier League since Blackburn in 1995. Only three teams outside that star quintet have won the FA Cup this century Portsmouth (2008), Wigan (2013) and Leicester (2021). This season might prove an
Liverpool hold the record for the most EFL Cup titles, having won the competition 10 times.
Nottingham Forest's improbable bid for Champions League qualification was strengthened by a 1-0 win over ailing Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday, with winger Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring the goal in the 83rd minute. City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes was beaten at his near post by Hudson-Odoi's shot in one of few clear-cut chances in a tight game at the City Ground. A few minutes earlier, Ederson had tipped a curling strike by Hudson-Odoi onto the post. I knew I'd get another chance and that one went in, so I'm buzzing, Hudson-Odoi said. Third-place Forest, which was battling relegation last season, moved four points clear of fourth-place City the winner of the last four Premier League titles but now a pale imitation of its former self. Pep Guardiola's team won't be making it five in a row City is 20 points behind Premier League leader Liverpool with 10 games left and has a fight on its hands just to finish in the top five in the league, which should be enough to qual
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday inaugurated a new Consulate General of India in Manchester, which he said was symbolic of the importance of the growing diaspora in the region and a sign of things to come, including an India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The external affairs minister (EAM) said it was apt that Vishakha Yaduvanshi takes over her role as India's newest Consul General on International Women's Day, reflective of the strides the government has made in putting women's issues at the centre of policy. He followed up the official opening of the consulate building in Stockport, Greater Manchester, with a celebratory diaspora reception at the Old Trafford stadium, where he interacted with members of the Lancashire Cricket Club's women's team members before they leave for Bengaluru for a pre-season tour next week. My first visit to Manchester here today, in a formal way, is an acknowledgement of how much this relationship has matured in the last four decades,
The FA Cup could yet be a way for Manchester City to finish a disappointing season with a trophy. City needed two goals from teenager Nico O'Reilly to come from behind and beat second-division side Plymouth Argyle 3-1 on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals of the only competition it still has a chance to win. An eventful day in the competition also saw two notable red cards, a seven-minute VAR check, a handshake snub and a tense penalty shootout as Crystal Palace, Preston and Bournemouth also advanced. The biggest talking point came in the early game where Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts was sent off for a wildly reckless challenge that left Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta needing 25 stitches on a cut to his ear. Wolves' star forward Matheus Cunha was then also sent off in the final minute of extra time against Bournemouth for headbutting an opponent having earlier scored a superb equalizer before his team went on to lose on penalties. City's win was relatively routine in .
Erling Haaland will be assessed to see if he has recovered from a knee injury ahead of Manchester City's Premier League game against Tottenham on Wednesday. Haaland missed City's losses to Real Madrid and Liverpool last week because of the injury. City manager Pep Guardiola said the Norway striker would be assessed after taking part in training on Tuesday. Tonight, we will know it after training. I hope (he will be available) but I don't know yet, he said. He feels better but the last two games he could not play. In video footage, Haaland appeared to be moving comfortable during City's session. City has struggled without its leading scorer going out of the Champions League after a 3-1 loss to Madrid and then losing 2-0 at home against Premier League leader Liverpool. Haaland, who has been the league's leading scorer in the past two seasons, has 27 goals in all competitions this term. That includes 19 league goals six behind top scorer Mohamed Salah of Liverpool. Four time def
