The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted interim protection to actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty from any coercive action in connection with a case of unpaid dues lodged at Chitpur police station here. Justice Jay Sengupta granted protection to Chakraborty from any coercive action in the case till September 10. The court, however, said that the investigation in the case can continue. The matter will come up for hearing again on September 3. The complainant in the case alleged that he had done interior decoration work of a property for a hotelier on assurance from Chakraborty. The hotelier had not yet paid him the billed amount totaling around Rs 35 lakh, the lawyer for the complainant said. Chakraborty moved the court seeking quashing of the FIR, claiming that false and motivated allegations were made against him. He also prayed for interim protection from any coercive action against him in the case lodged at Chitpur police station in north Kolkata.

Two FIRs have been lodged against actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty for allegedly making provocative statements during a BJP event in Salt Lake area near Kolkata last month, police said on Wednesday. The complaints pertain to Chakraborty's speech on October 27 at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Salt Lake, during a BJP programme attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was in Kolkata to launch the party's West Bengal membership drive. The first FIR was filed at the Bidhannagar South police station based on a complaint by an individual, while the second was lodged at Bowbazar police station. "We have started an investigation into the case," a senior officer of Bidhannagar police said. Shah was also present at the programme, which was organised to kick off the West Bengal leg of the BJP's membership drive. Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty was admitted to a private hospital here on Saturday after he complained of severe chest pain, officials of the health facility where he is undergoing treatment said. The 73-year-old actor underwent an MRI and other tests are currently being conducted, he said. "Chakraborty has been admitted this morning and is undergoing medical evaluation. We will be able to provide further details later," the hospital spokesperson said. The actor-turned-BJP leader was brought to the hospital around 10.30 am. "The reports of the MRI are awaited. He is currently in the ITU under the supervision of a neuromedicine specialist, a doctor at the hospital told PTI.
