Eight new measles cases in Mumbai, takes total tally this year to 84

Mumbai on Saturday reported eight new confirmed cases of measles. It took the tally of such cases reported in the city since January 1, 2022 to 84, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The death toll due to the measles since the start of the year remained unchanged at eight. Three confirmed cases each were reported from M-East ward (which covers Govandi and Deonar) and H-East ward (Bandra East, Khar), while G-South (Worli) and S (Bhandup/Nahur) wards reported single cases. The number of suspected patients who have reported symptoms like fever and rash increased to 3,036 with 176 such cases added on Saturday, the BMC health department said. "All cases of fever with rash are administered two doses of Vitamin-A and second dose of measles vaccine after 24 hours," BMC release said. Mumbai court orders release of activist Gautam Navlakha from house arrest

Gautam Navlakha, an accused in Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, is likely to walk out of the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai on Saturday, as a special court here issued a release memo to facilitate his month-long house arrest. The special court hearing cases related to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) issued the release memo around 2.15 pm on Saturday. On Friday afternoon, the Supreme Court had rejected the NIA's application and ordered that Navlakha be placed under house arrest "without fail" within 24 hours. The investigating agency on Saturday submitted to the special court here the compliance report about completing the release formalities of the activist, after which the court issued the release memo, which will then be mailed to the jail authorities and the Navi Mumbai police commissioner. Mumbai's measles tally reaches 176; suspected deaths remain at 8

The measles tally in Mumbai rose to 176 on Friday, up from 169 a day earlier, while the number of suspected deaths remained unchanged at eight, a civic official said. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's bulletin issued here late evening said the suspected cases of measles stood at 2,860. "In eight civic wards of Mumbai, the outbreak of measles has occurred at 17 locations. So far, eight suspected deaths have been reported. The death committee will review all these cases," the bulletin said. The BMC bulletin confirmed the death of a 10-year-old girl from measles here, but since she was from Bhiwandi in neighbouring Thane district, it would be added in the toll there. "As of now, the BMC has surveyed 23,87,386 households and it found 2,860 suspected patients having fever and rash symptoms, including 237 in the last 24 hours. Mumbai logs 30 new Covid-19 infections, no death; active case tally at 208

Mumbai on Wednesday reported 30 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 11,54,732, while no fresh death linked to the infection was recorded in the metropolis, said the local civic body. A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) bulletin said the death toll remained unchanged at 19,742. On Tuesday, the city reported 27 COVID-19 cases and zero fatality. Significantly, Mumbai's case doubling rate has jumped over the 25,000-day mark (25,496), indicating a dramatic slowdown in spread of the respiratory illness. The count of recoveries reached 11,34,782 after 46 patients recuperated from the infection in the last 24 hours, leaving the metropolis with 208 active cases, said the bulletin. The growth rate of COVID-19 cases between November 9 and 15 was 0.003 per cent, it said. As many as 4,506 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative count to 1,85,16,389, said the BMC. Mumbai's coronavirus recovery rate stood at 98.3 per cent, it added.

Extortion case: Bombay HC grants pre-arrest bail to DCP Saurabh Tripathi

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted pre-arrest bail to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Saurabh Tripathi in the angadiya (traditional couriers) extortion case. A single-judge bench of Justice Bharati Dangre noted that Tripathi had cooperated with the investigation and charge sheet in the case already filed by the police. Tripathi had approached the high court after a sessions court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. The LT Marg police, in south Mumbai, on February 19 registered an FIR in connection with the extortion case, in which four policemen, including Tripathi, an IPS officer of the 2010 batch, were named as accused. An inspector, an assistant inspector and a sub-inspector attached to LT Marg police station were arrested in the case. They are out on bail now. Customs seizes 61 Kg gold worth Rs 32 crore at Mumbai airport; 7 held

Customs officials seized 61 kg of gold worth Rs 32 crore in separate operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here, making it the highest value seizure by the department at the airport in a single day, an official said on Sunday. At least seven travellers, five men and two women, were arrested in the seizures that were made on Friday, the official said. Shah Rukh Khan stopped at Mumbai airport for hours over luxury watches

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and five members of his team were stopped for an hour at the Mumbai airport by Customs officials for not paying Customs duty for six luxury watches as the payment facility was not operational in the early hours of Saturday, an official said. The incident occurred at 12.30 AM after Khan landed at the airport from Dubai in a chartered flight, the official said and added that the payment counter at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) was not operational in the early hours. During the screening of the baggage of Khan and his team members, officials found six expensive watches in one of the bags, he said. The expensive watches are worth Rs 17.86 lakh as per Customs' evaluation, he said. The bag containing watches was carried by Khan's bodyguard Ravi Shankar Singh, the official said. Mumbai on Tuesday recorded 44 new coronavirus cases that raised the tally of infections to 11,54,478, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. As per a bulletin issued by the civic body, the death toll remained unchanged at 19,741 and the count of recoveries reached 11,34,341 after 83 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours. There has been a slight rise in infections, as the city had reported 25 cases on Monday. With a positivity rate of 98.2 per cent and doubling rate of 12,014 days, the city now has 396 active cases, the bulletin said. As many as 3,769 swab samples were tested in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of tests conducted in the state to 1,84,87,127, it said.

Maharashtra govt will plan film city between Mumbai and Thane: CM Shinde

The Maharashtra government will work on planning a film city between Mumbai and Thane cities to provide a wider platform to artists, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said. Speaking at an event on Sunday where noted Marathi theatre actor Prashant Damle was felicitated for the 12,500th show of his play 'Eka Lagnachi Gosht', Shinde said the state government will support Marathi theatre and cinema. "There is a lot of shooting happening in Thane too," he said, adding that a film city will be planned between Mumbai and Thane. Thane is located 23 km from the state capital. Mumbai: BMC official booked for accepting Rs 50 lakh bribe, says official

A 57-year-old employee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to stop action against a company for illegal construction in the western suburb of Andheri here, an official said on Saturday. A team from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) caught an executive engineer posted at the BMC's K-east ward while accepting the bribe amount at his office on Friday, he said. The civic body had on October 13 issued a notice to the company for the illegal construction of a shed, the official said. The complainant, who is working with the company, had submitted a reply on October 19, but the accused official was not satisfied, following which the civic body initiated the action of removing the shed on October 28, he said. The accused official called the complainant to his office and allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh to stop the removal of the shed, the official said. A 132-year-old tunnel-like structure discovered under Mumbai's JJ Hospital

A 132-year-old tunnel-like structure has been found on the premises of the government-run JJ Hospital in Mumbai, officials said on Friday. The 200-metre-long structure was found under a building which originally housed the Sir Dinshaw Manockjee Petit Hospital for Women and Children. It was later converted into a nursing college. The tunnel came to light during an inspection of the building following a complaint of water leakage, officials said. The foundation stone of the British-era heritage building was laid by Lord Reay, then Governor of Bombay, on January 27, 1890, said Dr Arun Rathod, Medical Superintendent of the hospital. Hospital Dean Dr Pallavi Saple told PTI that they have apprised the Mumbai collector and Maharashtra Archaeology Department about the discovery as the building is a heritage structure. Mumbai: Technical snag delays local trains on Western Rail's fast corridor

The local services in the Western Railway's fast corridor in Mumbai were delayed for a brief period on Friday morning due to the failure of a track-changing point, an official said. There was a "point failure" (track-changing point) at Goregaon on Up and Down fast lines at 6.20 am. The problem was resolved at around 7.23 am, a spokesperson of the Western Railway said. The trains running on the fast corridor were delayed during the morning rush hour because of the technical snag, he said. "Due to this technical problem, all up and down fast suburban locals are running late by 15 to 20 minutes. Inconvenience caused is deeply regretted," the Western Railway's divisional railway manager of Mumbai division tweeted. The suburban local trains, which are termed as Mumbai's lifeline, ferry around 35 lakh commuters every day.
