Automobile retail sales in India rose 6 per cent to 2,61,43,943 units in FY25 with rural areas performing better than urban regions across passenger vehicle and two-wheeler segments, dealers' body FADA said on Monday. The last financial year saw growth in sales of passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Registrations of commercial vehicles and tractors however saw a dip in FY25 as compared to FY24. Overall retail sales stood at 2,45,58,437 units in the 2023-24 fiscal. As per FADA, passenger vehicle retail sales witnessed an increase of 5 per cent to 41,53,432 units last fiscal as compared to 39,60,602 units in FY24. Two-wheeler registrations rose 8 per cent to 1,88,77,812 units as compared to 1,75,27,115 units in 2023-24 fiscal. The total passenger vehicle wholesales stood at 3,70,786 units in February 2024. Total two-wheeler dispatches, however, witnessed a dip of 9 per cent year-on-year to 13,84,605 units last month. The Mumbai police have filed a case against unidentified cyber fraudsters for cheating vehicle owners by creating fake links for the registration of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) for vehicles, officials said on Thursday. The incident came to light after an Assistant Transport Commissioner-rank officer approached the South Region Cyber police station here on Wednesday with a complaint against unidentified cyber fraudsters, an official said. The Maharashtra transport department has earlier mandated the vehicles registered before April 2019 to install HSRPs by April 30 this year. As per the Supreme Court's orders, the HSRPs are mandatory to prevent vehicle-related crimes. Accordingly, the work of replacing the number plates has been started in the state. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has provided a link on the transport department website to facilitate vehicle owners to register themselves for the HSRPs, the official said. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that it finalised the rule, which also requires enhanced warnings when front seat belts aren't fastened. The agency estimates that the new rule will save 50 lives per year and prevent 500 injuries when fully in effect, according to a statement. The new rule will apply to passenger cars, trucks, buses except for school buses, and multipurpose vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Before the rule, seat belt warnings were required only for the driver's seat. Under the new rule, outboard front-seat passengers also must get a warning if they don't fasten their belts. The overall passenger vehicle dispatches stood at 3,33,833 units in November last year. Market leader Maruti Suzuki India dispatched 1,41,312 units to its dealers last month, an increase of 5 per cent as compared with 1,34,158 units in November last year.
