Space leasing for light manufacturing activities rises 23% in 2023: C&W

Leasing of industrial space for light manufacturing activities rose 23 per cent last year to 15.9 million square feet across eight major cities due to favourable government policies, according to Cushman & Wakefield. The leasing of industrial space stood at 12.91 million square feet in the calendar year 2022. Real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) on Thursday released its annual Logistics and Industrial report (L&I) report, which showed that Pune and Chennai accounted for 53 per cent and 24 per cent of the total leasing of industrial space in 2023 across eight major cities. "The growth in industrial leasing indicates that manufacturing is on an uptrend on the back of healthy capacity utilization, implementation of business plans by domestic firms and incentivization of investments by multinationals through favourable government policies such as the multi-sector PLI scheme," the consultant said. No delay in disbursal of sops under PLI scheme for white goods: DPIIT

Applications of certain companies for claiming incentives under the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for the white goods (AC and LED lights) are under examination and there is no delay in disbursement, an official statement said on Wednesday. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) said that investors were given the option to choose one of the two gestation period - up to March 2022 (one year) and up to March 2023 (two years). All 15 projects -- companies which have opted for gestation period 2021-22 -- have been commissioned. "Companies opting for one year of gestation period are eligible for PLI in the current year (2023-24) based on achieving the threshold investment and net incremental sales in 2022-23. Their online applications are under examination by the PMA (project management agency). The PLI will be disbursed by March 2024. There is no delay in PLI disbursement under the scheme," it said. The scheme has attracted a mix of multinational

GTRI suggests criteria to simplify granting incentives under PLI schemes

Economic think tank GTRI has flagged the slow progress in disbursement of sops under production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes and suggested the government to simplify the criteria so as to expedite grant of incentives and push domestic manufacturing. The Rs 4,415 crore disbursement is only 2.25 per cent of the total outlay of Rs 1.97 lakh crore of incentives over five years under the PLI schemes announced in 2020, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said on Sunday. "This slow fund spend is unsurprising, considering that setting up greenfield or new manufacturing operations takes time," it said. "PLI criteria for various sectors include thresholds on investments, production, sales, degree of localization, inputs used and many more. Manufacturers may not be able to tick on all boxes," GTRI Co-Founder Ajay Srivastava said. Citing an example, he said in one of the cases, the government suspected the invoice value and disallowed the incentive of a few hundred crore. "In most .

PLI to only give kickstart, ultimately competition will prevail: Goyal

The industry should look at the measures under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme as an initial support because going forward, the industry has to face competition to grow further, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Saturday. He asked the PLI incentive beneficiary firms to share their "constructive criticism and feedback for better implementation of the scheme". The idea is to make India a manufacturing powerhouse and there is a long journey ahead, he said. More than 1,200 stakeholders, including government officials and industry players are meeting here and deliberating on the progress of 14 PLI schemes. The scheme incentives should not be seen as crutches and "we are not looking to make you dependent on government subsidies. This is only like a kickstart... "The PLI scheme is only meant to give you that little bit of a boost to kickstart your effort and please look at it as a kickstart, an initial support (because) ultimately competition will prevail,"
