BJP member Ranu Langthasa on Wednesday was elected unopposed as the Chairperson of the 12th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, polling for which took place last month. Langthasa was the Chairperson in the outgoing Council too and is the first woman to hold this position in 2016. The election for post was held at the Council premises in presence of Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Vikram Dev Sharma. Langthasa has been winning from Semkhor seat since 2007. The BJP swept the polls, held on January 19, by winning 19 of the 28 seats in the Council, while the Congress bagged two and the AGP managed one seat. The Congress Wednesday termed the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and representatives of mining-dependent people of Goa as an election gimmick. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday said the state government is yet to receive any notice from the Ministry of Home Affairs for taking disciplinary action against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for allegedly violating service conduct rules.
