EC says dissent view in model code violation cases can't be part of order

The Election Commission has issued a formal order making it clear that dissent views will not be made part of orders relating to model code violation cases, an issue which had led to acrimony among the top brass of the poll panel. The office order, issued on June 4, states that only the majority or unanimous view will be part of orders in such cases. On May 21, the Election Commission had rejected with a majority vote Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa's demand that dissent notes should be recorded in its orders on model code violations. The 'full commission' of the panel, comprising Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and two other members -Lavasa and Sushil Chandra- deliberated on the contentious issue, after which the Commission said that dissent notes and minority views would remain part of records but would not be part of its order. Gopalaswami named BCCI's electoral officer for AGM

Former Chief Election commissioner N Gopalaswami has been appointed as electoral officer for the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM), to be held on October 22. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) had last month announced that the long-awaited elections of the BCCI will be held on October 22. The CoA, which was appointed by the Supreme Court in January 2017 to oversee the sweeping reforms recommended by the Lodha panel, met Friday here at the BCCI headquarters to discuss the road map for the elections. The state associations are supposed to held their elections to elect office-bearers by September 14.

JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda Friday said his dignity has been impacted due to his and party's rout in the Lok Sabha polls and hit out at those trying to write his political epitaph,asserting he would "rise from the dust." Fadnavis calling Cong MLAs, asking them to join BJP: Chavan

Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan Friday accused Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of personally calling up Congress MLAs and asking them to join the BJP. Syria flare-up leaves 83 fighters dead: monitor

Fierce clashes between government forces and jihadists have left 83 combatants dead in northwestern Syria in the past 24 hours, a Britain-based war monitor said Friday. The clashes on the edge of the jihadist-controlled Idlib region have killed 44 government loyalists and 39 jihadists and Islamist fighters since Thursday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The region of some three million people -- almost half of them displaced from other parts of the country -- is dominated by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance led by Al-Qaeda's former Syrian affiliate. It administers a region that spans most of Idlib province as well as adjacent slivers of the neighbouring Latakia, Aleppo and Hama provinces. Home Ministry official discusses Amarnath Yarta arrangements with J&K guv

Union Home Ministry Additional Secretary Gyanesh Kumar called on Jammu and Kashmir Governor S P Malik here on Friday and discussed about the arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin next month. Kumar, who was accompanied by senior intelligence officers, briefed the governor regarding the foolproof arrangements being made for the pilgrimage, including en-route facilities for the devotees and security issues, a Raj Bhawan spokesperson said. The additional secretary informed Malik about the extensive meetings with the state police, intelligence agencies and the officers of the state administration, the spokesperson said. The officers also informed the governor about the aerial reconnaissance undertaken at the Pahalgam and Baltal routes and observations of the arrangements, the spokesperson added. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday demanded a collegium be set up on the lines of Supreme Court to appoint election commissioners. Ambedkar alleges mismatch in number of votes cast and counted

Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader Prakash Ambedkar Friday alleged that there was a discrepancy in the number of votes polled and the votes counted in over 300 Lok Sabha constituencies, and sought an explanation from the Election Commission of India (ECI). This was observed across all the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, he said. US commander says he believes Iran threat still 'very real'

Iran has chosen to "step back and recalculate" after making preparations for an apparent attack against U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf region, but it is too early to conclude the threat is gone, the top commander of American forces in the Mideast said. Miscreants fire at houses of NDPP leaders, no casualty

Unidentified miscreants are creating a fear psychosis by indiscriminately firing at the residence of ruling the National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) legislators and party leaders in Nagaland's Dimapur district, police said Friday. The miscreants fired several blank shots from sophisticated weapons in the past two nights, a police officer said, adding, there was no casualty.
