Dantewada Naxal attack: BJP MLA advised not to take route, says police

BJP MLA Bheema Mandavi was among the five people killed on Tuesday evening when Naxal's attacked his convoy in Dantewada region of Chattisgarh, two days before the region goes to vote in the first phase of the country's Lok Sabha elections.Police said it had advised the legislator against visiting the area without adequate security but his convoy took the route from Kuakonta to Syamgiri to visit the area and was attacked with an improvised explosive device some four kilometres away from Kuakonta.Special DG (Anti-Naxal Ops) DM Awasthi said, "Mandavi was out for an election campaign with DRG 50 jawans on 25 motorcycles. Rs 5.84 crore seized in north-eastern states

Investigation Directorate (ID) has seized an amount of Rs 5.84 crore from seven North-Eastern states during the current General Elections. The seizures were made between March 12 and April 8 by the authorities.Over 160 income tax officials have been deployed at sensitive locations across the North-East to curb the flow of illegal cash. Air Intelligence teams at 12 airports have also been deployed in view of the impending elections.Apart from Lok Sabha elections, state assembly elections in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh are also being conducted.The elections are scheduled to be conducted in seven phases starting from April 11 and ending on May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.

Desist from extending preferential treatment to one party, EC warns DD

The Election Commission Tuesday directed Doordarshan to "desist" from extending any preferential or disproportionate airtime coverage in favour of any party. In a strongly-worded letter to secretary, Information and Broadcasting Ministry, the EC said, "Would like you (secy) to direct the DD news channel to desist from extending any preferential or disproportionate airtime coverage in favour of any party and extend commensurate and balanced coverage of the activities of all recognised political parties..." The commission had recently issued a show cause notice to DD news for showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Main Bhi Chowkidar' programme for nearly one hour after opposition parties complained that the national broadcaster was being biased. Will fight cheating by chit fund cos: Congress

Congress general secretary Avinash Pande Tuesday said his party, if voted to power in the general elections, will bring in a strong legislation to curb cheating by chit fund companies. Pande said Rs 49,200 crore of 5.85 lakh investors in the country were due with the PACL company, and if his party forms the government at the centre, a strict law will be brought in to stop such crimes. He said PACL scams victims in the state had asked the Congress party, in the run-up to the last assembly elections here, to look into the matter. Accordingly, party president Rahul Gandhi directed Congress-ruled governments in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to work on measures to provide relief to such victims, Pande said. UN Security Council to meet Wednesday on Libya

The UN Security Council will hold urgent closed-door consultations on Wednesday on the crisis in Libya, where fighting has derailed UN-led efforts to prepare for elections. UN envoy Ghassan Salame will brief the council on his decision to postpone a national conference aimed at drawing up an election roadmap, diplomats said. Yasin Malik shifted to Delhi's Tihar Jail, to face NIA questioning in terror-funding case

JKLF chief Yasin Malik was Tuesday shifted to Delhi's Tihar Jail after the NIA secured his production remand in connection with a case related to funding of separatists and terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Malik, who was arrested last month and shifted to Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu, will be facing questions related to funding of his organisation from the National Investigation Agency. The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has reserved its judgment on a plea of the CBI for re-opening three-decade-old cases in which Malik was an accused. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief is facing charges of kidnapping and murder for being allegedly involved in abducting Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed in 1989 and killing of four Indian Air Force personnel in the early part of 1990.
