Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the new chief minister of Rajasthan, Bhajan Lal Sharma, is a dedicated BJP worker who made commendable efforts to strengthen the party, and wished him the very best in fulfilling people's aspirations. A surprise choice for the top post, Sharma was sworn in earlier in the day at a ceremony in Jaipur, which was attended by Modi and other senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bhajan Lal Sharma: An unlikely rise from village sarpanch to Rajasthan CM

A group photo taken at the BJP office here ahead of the legislature party meeting earlier this week showed Bhajan Lal Sharma in the very last row. But an hour or so later, he had jumped places to front and centre stage after the BJP announced that he has been chosen as the leader of the Rajasthan legislature party. On Friday, Sharma, 56, was sworn in as chief minister, three decades after his first appointment as a public figure the sarpanch of a village in Bharatpur district. Sharma, a general secretary in the BJP's state unit and a first-time MLA from Jaipur's Sanganer constituency, has kept a low profile in the party. Considered a hardcore RSS man, Sharma was actively involved in the agitation for the Ram temple in Ayodhya at the site where the Babri mosque stood. In 1992, he spent time in jail for this. BJP leader Bhajan Lal Sharma was on Friday sworn in as the chief minister of Rajasthan at a ceremony held in front of the Albert Hall here. Along with him, Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa were also sworn in as the deputy chief ministers. Governor Kalraj Mishra administered the oath in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several other Union ministers, chief ministers of various states and other leaders.

Bhajan Lal Sharma to take oath as Rajasthan chief minister today in Jaipur

The swearing-in ceremony of Rajasthan chief minister-designate Bhajan Lal Sharma will take place in Jaipur on Friday. Along with Sharma, Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa, who were named as deputy chief ministers in the recently held BJP legislature party meeting, will take oath. The three will be administered the oath of office by Governor Kalraj Mishra. Rajasthan's deputy chief minister-designate Prem Chand Bairwa on Wednesday said his priority would be to take along all sections of the society and also restore law and order in the state. The Congress government made Rajasthan number one in crimes against women and Dalits but now, people have rid the state of the misrule, he said. "We will work on restoring law and order. The suspense over who will be the new chief minister of Rajasthan is likely to end Tuesday evening with a BJP Legislature Party meeting scheduled to be held at 4 pm. BJP state general secretary and MLA Bhajanlal Sharma said the meeting will take place at the party's state headquarters in the presence of BJP central observer Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and two co-observers -- national vice president Saroj Pandey and national general secretary Vinod Tawde.
