At least five police personnel were killed and four others were injured in a head-on collision between an SUV and a truck on National Highway 49 in Odisha's Jharsuguda district early on Sunday, police said. The accident took place near Odisha Adarsh Vidyalaya in Jharsuguda Sadar police station area when eight personnel were returning from a wedding in Jharsuguda, while the truck was moving in the opposite direction, a senior police officer said. "Five police personnel from Jharsuguda district were killed in the accident while two were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bargarh. Three teenagers were killed and more than 18 others injured on Thursday in a head-on collision between two tractors here, police said. The accident occurred around 9.30 pm near a brick kiln at Sarai Barauli village under the Ughaiti police station limits. According to police, a group of people from Wazirganj was travelling in a tractor to attend a function when it collided with another tractor, with only its driver behind the wheel, coming from the opposite direction. The deceased have been identified as Nitin (10), Pooja (18) and Rani (16). More than 18 persons were injured in the accident, police said. Nine people were killed and 12 others sustained injuries after a mango-laden lorry overturned on a mini truck in Annamayya district, police said on Monday. According to the police, the Mango-laden truck was travelling from Thallapaka village in Rajampet mandal to Kodur, with labourers seated atop the loaded mango crates on the truck. It overturned while climbing an embankment of Reddipalli tank on NH-716. The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre to implement "in true letter and spirit" cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims, who would be entitled to a maximum amount of Rs 1.5 lakh per accident per person. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan directed the Centre to file an affidavit by end of August 2025 setting out the implementation of the scheme giving details such as the number of beneficiaries who received cashless treatment under the scheme.
