MediaTek to start rolling out world's smallest chip from September

Fabless semiconductor company MediaTek will begin production of world's smallest 2 nanometer chips from September this year, a senior official of the company said on Tuesday. At present the smallest chip in production is of 3 nanometer size. "We are now moving into 2 nanometers. We will be taking out our first 2 nanometers device in September this year. Of course, this is a high-volume chip," MediaTek Vice Chairman and CEO Rick Tsai said at global tech event Computex. Tarun Pathak, Research Director, Counterpoint Research said MediaTek's announcement that its first 2nm chip will be "taped out" in September is a significant achievement, highlighting its strengthening partnership with industry leaders like TSMC. "This 2nm chip is likely a custom ASIC (application specific chip) or a smartphone, designed for substantial efficiency gains through structural innovations," he said. Tsai said that in addition to advanced computing devices, MediaTek is moving towards connectivity technolog

Scientists submit report to govt on developing new semiconductor material

A team of 30 scientists from India's premier institute, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), has submitted a proposal to the government to develop 'angstrom-scale' chips, far smaller than the smallest chips currently in production. The team has submitted the proposal to the government for developing technologies using a new class of semiconductor materials, called 2D Materials, that could enable chip sizes as small as one-tenth of the smallest chips currently in global production and develop India's leadership in semiconductors. Currently, semiconductor manufacturing is dominated by silicon-based technologies, led by advanced nations such as the US, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. "A team of scientists at IISc submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) in April 2022, which was revised and submitted again in October 2024. The report was later shared with the Ministry of Electronics and IT. The project promises to develop angstrom-scale chip

India-US trade deal must address more on non-tariff barriers: SIA CEO

While tariff is important, the bilateral trade agreement between India and the US should focus more on non-tariff barriers, a top official of Semiconductor Industry Association said on Friday. India can have a higher share in the USD 600 billion semiconductor market if it plays the cards right, Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) President and CEO John Neuffer said during a panel discussion at Global Technology Summit organised by Carnegie India. "As we think about our bilateral future and our cooperation within the BTA (bilateral trade agreement), we shouldn't over-index on the tariff piece of it. There's no doubt about it, that's really important, but more emphasis needs to be given to the non-tariff barriers. That's been talked about in Washington quite a bit. There's customs problems, there's siting regulations that need to be streamlined," Neuffer said. India and the US are holding discussions for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) to rationalise import taxes in the ...
