Better employment opportunities, healthcare and drinking water were the top three issues on which voters want the government of the day to work on, a national survey conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has claimed. As per the survey, conducted between October and December in 2018, the performance of the government has been rated "below-average", Jagdeep Chhokar, founder member, National Election Watch, ADR, told reporters here on Monday. The survey covered 534 Lok Sabha constituencies with 2,73,487 voters participating in the exercise. It was spread across various demographics such as voters' priorities on specific governance issues; voters' ratings of the government's performance on those issues, and factors affecting voting behaviour. Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat staged a silent protest here on Monday against the death of a Dalit youth who was allegedly beaten up by upper-caste people for eating in front of them at a wedding. The Congress general secretary held the hour-long protest with his supporters in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Gandhi Park. Rawat demanded that the ruling BJP government in the state must immediately extend financial help to the deceased's family as the youth was the sole breadwinner. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday conducted raids at 22 educational institutions in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh in connection with a multi-crore scholarship scam.The raids were carried out after the agency registered a case against unknown officials for misappropriation of scholarships meant for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Class and Minority community to the tune of Rs 250 crore, a CBI spokesman said.The funds, meant to be transferred to the accounts of the students, were allegedly siphoned off to other accounts.

A group of Kashmiri Pandits staged a protest here on Monday alleging that an apple orchard owned by a member of the community was vandalised by miscreants in South Kashmir. The protesters alleged that the incident was aimed at creating a sense of insecurity among the minority community in Kashmir and demanded arrest of the culprits. "I came to Jammu last week from Kashmir. Two days ago, I received a call from the people in the valley that my apple orchard at Akura village of Anantnag district has been vandalised during the night," Ajay Raina, the owner of the orchard, told reporters here. Police have registered a case and taken up investigation, officials said. All State Kashmiri Pandit Conference (ASKPC) general secretary T K Bhat said, "We want the culprits to be arrested and punished severely." Body of a 55-year-old man was found hanging from the ceiling of an under construction building here on Sunday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Sunil Kumar. He was staying in a rented accommodation in Rajiv Nagar colony of the state capital, the police said, adding that prima facie, it seems to be the case of a suicide, though no suicide note was found from the site of occurrence. Kumar's body was found hanging in an under construction building in Magadh colony near Kurji nala, the police said.
