India's capacity to generate solar power could fall by 600-800 gigawatt-hour before mid-century due to air pollution and climate change, a study has projected. The researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, found that northern, western and southern power grids -- where most solar parks are currently located -- will experience significant challenges in maintaining performance due to climate change. Pollutants in the air can absorb and scatter sunlight, thereby lowering the intensity of the sun's radiation reaching the earth's surface. Further, generating solar power relies heavily on weather and climate, and is, therefore, vulnerable to the effects of climate change. ACME Solar on Sunday said it has planned an investment of Rs 17,000 crore on capital expenditure in FY26 with a focus on hybrid and round-the-clock renewable capacities. The company is also evaluating entry in nuclear energy segment, though these plans are at a drawing board level, ACME Solar said in a statement. ACME Solar Holdings plans to invest Rs 17,000 crore to boost renewable energy capacity to 5 GigaWatts by 2027. As a broader strategy, ACME Solar aims to treble its current renewable capacity to reach 7 GW by 2028, according to the statement. Emmvee Energy, a manufacturer of high-quality solar photovoltaic panels and modules, announced plans to invest Rs 15,000 crore in a phased manner to establish a manufacturing plant, Karnataka's Minister for Large and Medium Industries, M B Patil, said on Thursday. He made this announcement after senior company representatives met him at Vidhana Soudha. The minister noted that the investment is part of the proposals for which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed during the recently concluded Global Investors Meet (GIM)Invest Karnataka 2025. According to the minister, Emmvee Energy will initially invest Rs 5,000 crore to set up a facility with a 5 GW power generation capacity, creating 10,000 jobs, his office said in a release. State-owned Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) said it has received the government's approval to raise up to Rs 4,500 crore through an issue of equity shares to qualified institutions placement. The approval was granted by the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) based on the recommendations of a high-level committee, a company statement said. According to the statement, the fundraising will be carried out through the Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) route, with a planned dilution of the Government of India's shareholding in IREDA by up to 7 per cent on a post-issue basis, to be executed in one or more tranches. Renewable energy projects of about 151 GW capacity are under various stages of implementation in the country, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has said. The Minister for New and Renewable Energy further said that around 76.42 GW of renewable energy capacity will be operationalized in next 3-4 years. "The government is taking several initiatives to prioritise renewable energy. Nearly 151 GW of renewable projects are being implemented, and 76.42 GW will be operationalized in 3-4 years," he said addressing a session at 'Mercom India Renewables Summit 2024' in the national capital on Friday. The tendering process for 76.42 GW capacity of projects has already been completed, the minister said. The renewable energy capacity has increased over 2.5 times from 76 GW in 2014 to more than 195 GW as of June 2024, Joshi said.
