Argentina in good 'psychological' shape ahead of Qatar

Argentina are in good "psychological" shape ahead of their must-win clash with Qatar at the Copa America, coach Lionel Scaloni said on Saturday. Following a 2-0 defeat to Colombia and 1-1 draw with Paraguay, Argentina are bottom of Group B with one game left knowing that only a top two finish will guarantee them a place in the quarter-finals. "From a mental and psychological perspective we're in good shape because we have the possibility of progressing and if we win we're in the next round," said Scaloni. As well as the top two in each group, two of the three third-placed finishers will make the knock-out stages. If Paraguay beat Colombia in Salvador, Argentina would not be able to finish in the top two. But Peru's 5-0 defeat to Brazil on Saturday left them third in Group A with four points and a goal difference of minus three. Any Argentina victory would leave them above Peru should they finish third in Group B. Having changed his forward line between the Colombia and Paraguay ...

Goalkeeper gaffe helps Brazil trounce Peru to reach Copa quarter-finals

Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese committed a horrendous error as Brazil ensured top spot in their Copa America group on Saturday with a 5-0 victory in Sao Paulo. Goals from Casemiro, Roberto Firmino, Everton, Dani Alves and Willian ensured the Selecao would finish top of Group A and will play their quarter-final in Porto Alegre, potentially against out-of-sorts Argentina, their bitter rivals. "We knew we'd get there sooner or later because we worked very hard," captain Alves told TV Globo. "It's thanks to wins like this that we're connected with the fans. When we're all together, we feel the positive energy," he added, alluding to the jeers that greeted the team in their first two group matches. With Peru already 1-0 down, it was Gallese's dreadful error that led to Firmino's goal and swept the mat from under Peru's feet, with the game turning into a rout. Darwin Machis scored a brace as Venezuela beat Bolivia 3-1 in Belo Horizonte and leapfrogged Peru into second place, securing a ...

Williamson stars as New Zealand survive Brathwaite scare to win Windies thriller

Kane Williamson's latest World Cup batting masterclass proved just enough to trump a stunning century from Carlos Brathwaite as New Zealand beat the West Indies by five runs in a World Cup thriller on Saturday. The West Indies were all but defeated at 164 for seven, chasing 292 to win after Black Caps skipper Williamson led a recovery from 7-2 with a career-best 148 to take New Zealand to 291-8. Brathwaite's remarkable hundred nearly saw the West Indies to an incredible success at Old Trafford. But with six needed from seven balls, Brathwaite launched Jimmy Neesham for what he hoped would be the winning hit, only for Trent Boult to take a superbly judged catch just inside the long-on boundary. Brathwaite sank to his knees in despair after falling for 101 off just 82 balls, including five sixes and nine fours, having dominated a last-wicket stand of 41 in which he scored all the runs. Victory saw New Zealand return to the top of the table and all but secure their place in the ...
