Visakhapatnam to host 2 IPL play off matches on May 8 & 10
: The port city of Visakhapatnam will host two play-off matches in the ongoing IPL on May 8 and 10, the Andhra Cricket Association informed in a press release here Tuesday. The play-offs were originally scheduled to be held in Chennai, but were now being re-located to Visakhapatnam due to exigencies, ACA general secretary Ch Arun Kumar said. IPL officials visited the YSR-ACA cricket stadium in Visakhapatnam recently to inspect the facilities for possibly making it a standby venue in any eventuality. "The ground is in excellent condition and all other facilities are in place for conducting the IPL matches," the ACA general secretary said. Visakhapatnam, an international cricket venue, had hosted a few IPL matches in 2016 when the Maharashtra High Court barred conduct of matches in the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Palaniswami, Stalin, hail half miler for bagging gold at Doha
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin Tuesday hailed half miler Gomathi Marimuthu for bagging gold in the ongoing Asian Athletics Champions in Qatar. The 30-year-old unheralded Gomathi had clocked a personal best time of 2 minute 02.70 seconds in the women's 800m race in Doha on Monday. In a letter to Marimuthu, who hails from Tiruchirappally, Palaniswami lauded the sportsperson for her international feat and expressed joy over her winning the gold medal. "I wish you participate in more such international tournaments and bring laurels to India and Tamil Nadu," he said. Stalin, the DMK President, expressed joy over Marimuthu winning gold in the athletics event, saying she has made the country and the state proud. "I extend my greetings to her to achieve bigger feat," he said in a tweet. AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran and MDMK founder Vaiko also hailed the athlete for bringing laurels to the country.

India's Apurvi Chandela and Anjum Moudgil continued their great form, reaching yet another International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup final, but eventually finished outside the podium here Tuesday. On day one of competitions in the Rifle/Pistol World Cup, the two air rifle shooters eased into the women's 10m finals with solid scores, making it their fifth ISSF final in less than two years, including the World Championship last year. World record holder Apurvi, in fact, topped the qualification charts with 630.9 after 60 shots, while Anjum, her teammate from Punjab, qualified fourth out of 107 shooters, with a score of 629.4. Former South Africa cricketer Gary Kirsten is using the game to change the lives of kids. Kirsten's goal now is to establish a "cricket excellence programme."Away from the international platform, the 51-year-old first arrived in Khayelitsha, a small town in South Africa, six-seven years ago. Kirsten got in touch with the principal of one of the schools, and found out there was no sports facility available for the kids, ICC Cricket 360 reported.From having "no appetite for the game," the town is now attracting hundreds of kids to participate every week."There used to be no appetite for the game here, and five years later, we have got 450 kids playing cricket every week. AAI set to sue Dutch airline, Rao mulling defamation case against Batra
The Archery Association of India (AAI) is contemplating legal action against the Dutch airline KLM after the national team were forced to miss the World Cup (Stage 1) in Medellin, Colombia due to a flight delay. The 23-member contingent was slated to board Royal Dutch Airlines KLM 872 from Delhi to Amsterdam early Saturday morning but due to "operational issues" the flight was delayed by two hours 53 minutes, that shattered their onward journey plan to Medellin. "Having confirmed tickets, it was the responsibility of KLM to transport the Indian team to Colombia. Hence, AAI is seriously considering to sue the airlines for the damage caused to the reputation of the organisation," AAI stated in a press release. The AAI in their defence said: "When the team reported at KLM desk at the airport on Saturday morning, the airlines said the flight was delayed by more than two hours and hence they would miss the connecting flight from Amsterdam and cannot reach Columbia."
