Sri Lankan cricket has hit an all-time nadir and the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan is blames it on the paucity of talent coupled with lack of passion among the current generation of cricketers for this steady decline. Ferit Cricket Bash to tap budding cricketers

: Budding cricketers hoping to make it big in the international stage now have a platform to nurture their dreams with Ferit Sports India Pvt Ltd Saturday unveiling the 'Ferit Cricket Bash' here for youngsters. The Ferit Cricket Bash would conduct trial matches to select individuals who need to be above the age of 15 years years, Ferit Sports India, co-founder Mitesh Sharma said. The company would pick 14 players from 25 cities across India. "The best ones will get selected and get the chance to represent their respective states in league matches," he said. He said each match will be of 15 overs and players would use a ball made of synthetic fibre instead of the regular leather cricket ball. Indians clinch four medals in Bahrain Open TT

India's young paddlers stole the limelight in the Bahrain Junior and Cadet Open table tennis tournament, clinching four medals, including a gold, in Manama. Besides the gold, India won two silver and a bronze. India fielded three teams in the cadet girls' team event and swept all the three medals on offer. India A team won the gold, the India B the silver and the India C the bronze. India B team of Yashaswini Ghorpade and Kavya Sree Baskar beat Egypt in the first semifinal while India A defeated India C in the other semifinal. In the final, the India A team of Suhana Saini and Anargya Manjunath proved too strong for India B and clinched the gold medal on Friday night. In the junior girls' competition, which was played in a round robin format, the Indian team of Manushree Patil and Swastika Ghosh beat three teams before losing to eventual champions Russia. The Indian team collected seven points to win the silver medal.

Coulter-Nile suffers vertigo bout during BBL game

Nathan Coulter-Nile, who was picked this week for Australia's one-day and Twenty20 tour of India, was taken to hospital Saturday after a bout of vertigo during a Big Bash League game. The Perth Scorchers fast bowler had delivered the fifth ball of his final over late in the Twenty20 match against the Adelaide Strikers when he signalled that all was not well. After consulting with Perth captain Mitchell Marsh, he bowled the sixth ball, which was hit for six, before sinking to his haunches and sitting on the ground. Scorchers physio Chris Quinnell said Coulter-Nile had suffered a "bad bout of vertigo". "He was taken to hospital after the game as a precaution and will be monitored over the next few hours," Quinnell said on the BBL website. Coulter-Nile's inclusion in Australia's squad for the India tour came after he was left out of recent home limited overs internationals with back issues.

Bangladesh's Shakib ruled out of New Zealand ODIs

Bangladesh suffered a fresh injury blow ahead of next week's one-day international series against New Zealand Saturday, after the Bangladesh Cricket Board said all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan had been ruled out with a finger fracture. Shakib sustained the injury to his left ring finger while batting in the final of the sixth edition of Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament on Friday evening, said the BCB. An X-ray following the match confirmed a fracture, and the finger will "have to be immobilised for around three weeks," said senior BCB physician Debashis Chowdhury.
