West Indies cricket chiefs insisted they were standing by the decision to name Richard Pybus as their new head coach despite a storm of criticism which greeted the Englishman's appointment. Pybus, who previously worked as director of cricket for the West Indies from 2013 to 2016, will coach the team for the forthcoming series against England, the World Cup and the visit of India in July and August. "Following a meeting of the board of directors, the organisation affirmed that the appointment of Pybus was made with the support of more than two-thirds of its board to ensure the team had strong leadership ahead of the busy cricket season this year," said a Cricket West Indies (CWI) statement. Pep Guardiola takes reigning champions Manchester City to struggling Huddersfield on Sunday, with the Premier League's bottom side facing the prospect of finding themselves on the receiving end of Kevin De Bruyne's frustration. Arguably City's standout performer in their record-breaking title campaign last season, the Belgian's season has been badly interrupted by two lengthy spells on the sidelines with knee problems. Now fully fit, De Bruyne has cut a frustrated figure on occasion, most notably when substituted during his team's emphatic 9-0 victory over League One Burton in the semi-final of the League Cup last week. De Bruyne ran down the tunnel after being replaced in that game and, according to reports, watched the final exchanges from the City dressing room rather than from the bench, as club protocol dictates. Coincidence or not, De Bruyne found himself left out of the starting line-up for City's next game, the 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton on Monday, although the fact he was
Australia's women's football coach Alen Stajcic was sacked Saturday just months out from the World Cup amid concerns over "workplace" and "player welfare" issues. The move comes despite guiding the Matildas to as high as fourth in the FIFA world rankings in one of their most successful eras since being appointed in 2014. Football Federation Australia chief David Gallop said he had lost faith in Stajcic. "The ultimate responsibility for driving change and leading a high-performance environment that puts the team in the best possible position to achieve what they are capable of, rests with the head coach," he said. "We no longer have confidence that Alen is the right person to lead the team and staff." The women's World Cup takes place in France in June and July, while Australia are due to play New Zealand, South Korea and Argentina on home soil in the Tournament of Nations from February 8. Gallop cited two recently conducted confidential FFA surveys to evaluate the standard of the team

Pliskova struggled with a painful shoulder complaint that required treatment at every change of ends, and medical timeouts, before somehow beating China's Zhang Shuai 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 as the temperature rose in the centre court sunshine. They played ahead of Serena Williams making another bow on Rod Laver Arena as she gathers steam in her bid to win a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title. Richard McLaren, the Canadian lawyer whose 2016 bombshell report exposed state-sponsored doping in Russia, suspects "hundreds" of doping cases could be contained in the latest data retrieved from Moscow. On Thursday, WADA said they had "successfully retrieved" data from the Moscow laboratory at the heart of the affair. "It's pretty much anyone's guess as to what that number is," McLaren said when asked how many doping cases he expected the new data to reveal. "My thinking would be in the 300-600 possible range." WADA had demanded the data be handed over to complete its probe into the 2011-2015 scandal which eventually saw Russia's athletics team barred from the 2016 Rio Olympics and exiled from the 2018 Winter Olympics. In September, WADA conditionally lifted a ban on the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), paving the way for its reinstatement. One of the conditions was access being granted to the data by the end of 2018. But when a WADA team arrived last month, Russian authorities ..
