Domestic passenger vehicle sales hit a record in August led by highest-ever monthly dispatches from Maruti Suzuki on the back of festive demand and the continued strong offtake of SUVs. Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota Kirloskar Motor also reported strong dispatches to dealers last month. Tata Motors, however, saw a dip in domestic passenger vehicle sales in August. "The month of August was a very good month for the industry. Passenger vehicle sales in August stood at 3,60,897 units. This is the highest ever monthly sales in any month in any year in the industry," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) Shashank Srivastava said. Sedans are still holding strong for Mercedes Benz India despite the demand for SUVs soaring in the overall Indian passenger cars market, according to company Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer. Although the company expects the share of SUVs to its overall sales will be slightly skewed after the recent launch of its new GLC SUV, he said the demand for its sedans continues to be very strong. "Fortunately our portfolio is a balanced sedan-SUV portfolio. We have the A Class, the B Class, the E Class and the S Class in sedan and then we have mirrored that in the SUV portfolio with a GLA, GLC, GLE and GLS. Right now the share of sedan versus SUVs is almost 48:52," Iyer told PTI. Hyundai Motor India on Wednesday said it has bagged over 50,000 bookings for its recently launched entry-level SUV Exter. The company had launched the model in India on July 10. "This SUV has redefined benchmarks in the country and offers customers superior safety with six airbags as standard..the response to Exter is euphoric, so much so that the bookings have zoomed from 10,000 pre-launch to 50,000-plus in less than 30 days of launch," Hyundai Motor India COO Tarun Garg said in a statement. The trims with sunroof constitute more than 75 per cent of total bookings signalling a big thumbs up from the customers for the segment raising benchmark features introduced in the Exter, he added. Luxury auto maker Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday launched the latest version of its premium SUV GLC in India with price starting at Rs 73.5 lakh (ex-showroom). The second generation GLC comes with petrol and diesel power trains tagged at Rs 73.5 lakh and Rs 74.5 lakh, respectively. The auto maker said the company has received over 1,500 bookings for the model since the start of the booking process. In an interaction with PTI, Mercedes-Benz India Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) Lance Bennett said the company is looking at a double-digit sales growth this year with GLC sales expected to account for 15 per cent of the company's total sales. German luxury carmaker BMW on Friday launched the new version of its popular SUV X5 with prices starting at Rs 93.9 lakh (ex-showroom). The model is locally produced at the company's Chennai plant and will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol option has a 3-litre engine with a power output of 381 hp and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 5.4 seconds. It comes in two variants priced at Rs 93.9 lakh and Rs 1.05 crore, BMW India said in a statement. German luxury carmaker Audi will launch electric SUV Q8 e-tron in India next month to strengthen its electric vehicle portfolio in the country, according to a senior company official. The company will launch its Q8 e-tron on August 18, in two body types -- Q8 e-tron SUV and Q8 e-tron Sportback -- with a 114kW battery offering more range as compared to the existing e-tron that has a 95 kW battery.
