Tamil Nadu made sincere efforts in 2024 to realise its USD 1 trillion economy dream by 2030 as the ruling DMK government secured some big ticket investments and rolled out sector-specific policies, among others. Student sexual assault: TN BJP chief Annamalai stages whiplash agitation

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai staged a unique agitation here on Friday when he flogged himself condemning the ruling DMK and the state police over the handling of the case of sexual assault on a Chennai college student on Christmas eve. Clad in green dhoti, a bare-chested Annamalai took a whip from his party worker and whipped himself repeatedly, in front of his residence here, as the BJP members stood around him displaying placards condemning the police for the alleged leak of FIR pertaining to the woman's complaint. On Thursday, Annamalai dramatically removed his shoes at a press conference here and announced that he would not wear footwear till the ruling DMK government is dislodged. The former IPS officer had accused the state police of deliberately disclosing the identity of the girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted. TN CM Stalin urges Centre for release of 17 fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka

Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday apprised the Centre of the arrest of 17 Tamil Nadu fishermen and seizure of their two boats by Sri Lanka and called for quick steps for their release and the boats as well. Stalin, writing to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, said that 17 fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested and their two mechanised fishing boats were seized by the Sri Lankan Navy on December 24, 2024. Also, Stalin brought to Jaishankar's notice, two separate incidents of attack on fishermen from Kodiyakkarai in Nagapattinam district by 6 unidentified Sri Lankan nationals on December 20. "In this outrageous incident, three out of six fishermen who sailed in two country crafts were injured and their belongings such as GPS equipment, VHF equipment, fishing net, mobile phone and their fish catch were robbed from their fishing boats by the attackers," the CM said in his letter. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has said that the monthly electricity billing system for power loom units in the state was under consideration. Stalin made a surprise visit to a private power loom unit here on Thursday night and interacted with the owner and workers of the factory. The owner thanked the CM for increasing the free supply of electricity from 750 units to 1,000 units for the power loom units. Private sector Karur Vysya Bank has inaugurated four new branches in Tamil Nadu, under its plan to strengthen presence, taking the overall branch network to 862, the bank said on Sunday. The Tamil Nadu headquartered bank had inaugurated 24 new branches in the current financial year. The four new branches were inaugurated in Madurai, Tiruppur, Krishnagiri and Chennai, a press release said here. The new branches would cater to provide all basic banking transactions and also to specific needs of customers and would also offer the entire spectrum of banking and financial services. Karur Vysya Bank as on September 30, 2024 reported a total business of Rs 1,76,138 crore and a net profit of Rs 932 crore. L&T's data centre biz onboards first major customer in Tamil Nadu

Infrastructure major Larsen and Toubro (L&T) on Thursday said its data centre business L&T-Cloudfiniti has on boarded the first major customer at its hyperscale data centre in Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The centre has a built-in capacity of 30 MW, of which 12 MW colocation-ready capacity is live across two floors, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) said in a stock exchange filing. SC asks TN to list steps for appointment of trustee committee for temples

The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to spell out its proposed actions over the appointment of the "Arangavalar Committee" (trustee committee) for all Hindu temples in the state. "File an affidavit as to what you (state government) propose to do, a bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Aravind Kumar asked the Tamil Nadu government counsel. The direction came after the state government informed the apex court that it had sought applications for appointment of trustee committees from 31,000 temples and such panels were appointed in over 7,500 temples only as many were yet to respond. The bench granted four weeks' time to the state government to file the affidavit and listed the plea of petitioner "Hindu Dharma Parishad" in February, 2025.
