Tamil Nadu Excise Minister S Muthusamy on Saturday alleged the Enforcement Directorate harassed state government officials in the probe over its allegation of a scam in state-run TASMAC and violated procedures mandated by the Supreme Court. The minister accused the central agency of "political vendetta" and strongly condemned it and assured all legal measures against it. Madras HC Bench recuses itself from hearing TASMAC plea against ED searches

A division bench comprising Justices M S Ramesh and N Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court on Tuesday recused itself from hearing the petitions filed by TASMAC and the Tamil Nadu government against the recent ED searches on the state-run liquor retailer. When the petitions filed by TASMAC and the state government came up for hearing, the bench said it recused itself from hearing the case, but did not specify any reasons. The bench had on March 20 directed the Enforcement Directorate, which conducted raids on the premises of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) earlier this month, to produce copies of FIR and Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) along with any other material which it relied upon against TASMAC. The Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) not to proceed further pursuant to its searches at state-run liquor retailer TASMAC's headquarters in the city recently. While giving an oral direction to ED in this connection, the HC also directed the central agency to produce copies of FIR and Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) along with any other materials which it relied upon against the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation. ED says it found unaccounted-for cash deals worth ₹1,000 cr in TASMAC ops

The Enforcement Directorate Thursday said it has found "multiple irregularities" in the operations of TASMAC that has monopoly over liquor trade in Tamil Nadu, including "manipulation" in the tender processes and "unaccounted" cash transactions worth Rs 1,000 crore through distillery companies. The federal agency claimed in a statement that it got "evidence" suggesting these corrupt practices after it raided the employees, corporate offices of distilleries and plants of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) on March 6. Alcoholic beverages to cost more in Tamil Nadu with effect from February 1

The state-run liquor monolith Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) on Monday announced an increase in the price of all varieties of liquor, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 80, with effect from February 1. While a 650 ml bottle of beer will cost Rs 10 more, 180 ml (known popularly as quarter) of 'ordinary' and 'medium' range of brandy, whiskey and rum will be dearer by Rs 10 and consumers have to shell out Rs 20 more for the 'premium' range, an official release said. As per the revised schedule, alcoholic drinks, sold in higher quantities will accordingly cost more.
