Indian-origin scientist to help US troops control robots with thoughts

An Indian-origin scientist and his team in the US have won a whopping USD 20 million contract from an agency of the defence department to develop a system that could allow a soldier to control multiple unmanned aerial vehicles or even a bomb disposal robot with his thoughts. The team headed by Gaurav Sharma, a senior research scientist at Battelle, is among six teams to win grants to develop brain-machine interfaces, according to a statement by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Sharma, 40, has been tasked to develop a system that could ultimately allow a soldier to put on a helmet and use his mind to control multiple unmanned aerial vehicles or even a bomb disposal robot, Battelle, a Columbus-based R&D organisation, said in a statement. ISTRAC takes control of RISAT2B: ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday said following the successful launch of radar imaging earth observation satellite RISAT2B, the telemetry tracking and command network has assumed control of the satellite. In a statement, the ISRO said PSLV-C46 successfully injected the satellite, RISAT2B, into an orbit of 556 kms, about 15 minutes and 25 seconds after lift-off from the first launch pad. "After separation, solar arrays of RISAT-2B were deployed automatically and ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bengaluru assumed control of the satellite," the statement said. "In the coming days, the satellite will be brought to its final operational configuration," it added. Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL owners report random shutdowns

Owners of the recently released Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are reporting random device shutdowns.A Reddit post describes the problem impacting both the models where the devices require a hard reset by holding the power button down for 30 seconds before they turn back on. Another user reported similar crashing of the device without any trigger. One user reported the problem while connecting to the home Wi-Fi.Some tried using the device in Safe Mode, but that too did not appear to have helped much. Huawei gets temporary relief from US ban

A day after major tech companies including Google, Qualcomm, and Intel agreed to follow US orders and cut ties with Huawei, the Trump administration decided to provide some temporary relief to the troubled company.The US Department of Commerce announced that it is issuing Huawei a 90-day exemption from trade restrictions through a Temporary General License (TGL). It grants operators time to make other arrangements and authorises specific, engagement in transactions involving the export, reexport, and transfer of items.This license also allows operations to continue for existing Huawei mobile phone users and rural broadband networks for the stated period. The Department will evaluate whether to extend the TGL beyond 90 days.
